So glad you liked my video. Are you asking where to get the glazing medium? You can use any slow drying medium. I like to use Golden's Gloss Glazing Liquid. You can purchase it online at any of the online art stores like Dick Blick, or Amazon. You can also make your own by adding 15% retarder (Golden sells this too) to any clear Gloss Acrylic Medium. Thanks for your comment!

@nancyreyner my artist friend uses a collage on her paintings! It's amazing. Can I use the glaze for that as well?
@nancyreyner
@nancyreyner 14 күн бұрын
@@Kathleen-dn6mz Good question. The glaze is a slow drying medium. For best results for glueing you want something that won't dry too fast, because you want to be able to spread it out onto your collage item, then place it where you want to glue it, all while the glue is still wet. If the glue dries before the item and surface are put together it won't stick. So yes you could use the glaze because it is slow drying. However, there's another factor. Mediums i general dry faster than gels which are thicker. When using mediums for glueing, they tend to wrinkle thin papers, while gels keep them smooth. For collage, I like using Golden's Soft Gel Gloss for glueing thin or regular weight papers, or Regular Gel Gloss for heavier items. I suggest you experiment glueing with the Glazing Liquid on something you don't care about. Try comparing glueing with that versus using a gel to see which you like better.

Can I put gold leaf over gold leaf where it has a few peek through under painting showing through. And can I glaze using acrylic inks. Thank you for this amazing tutorial.
@nancyreyner
@nancyreyner 27 күн бұрын
Yes you can apply leaf over leaf. I would seal the first layer of leaf prior to applying any other leaf on top. Use a solvent-based or oil based adhesive for your second layer of leaf if you are going over a solvent or oil based seal. You can use the water-based adhesive over a water-based sealer. You can use acrylic inks to glaze, but glazing usually means a transparent evenly applied layer, which means you would be using a very small amount of the inks with a larger amount of some time of slow drying medium or a glazing medium. Thanks for your comment and glad you like my video!

I have real gold leaf and I'm not sure if I should put GAC200 GOLDEN on it to protect it or not. I have my acrylic paint and I put gold leaf on it can I use GAC200 on the whole paint or just on the real gold leaf. Thanks for sharing your experience with gold leaf. 🥰
@nancyreyner
@nancyreyner 28 күн бұрын
GAC200 is tricky because it dries fast and it's easy to create some issues by overbrushing. Since you are using real gold leaf, it will not tarnish using water-based acrylic. This means you can use just about anything to seal and protect the leaf. You can use any clear acrylic spray, or any clear gloss acrylic medium. If you do want to use the GAC200, you can add some GAC500 into it (around a 1:1 ratio) which will ease the application. The easiest thing to do would be to apply one coat of a gloss acrylic medium, then apply your acrylic painting, then varnish it with any painting varnish - waterbased or solvent based. I suggested the GAC200 as a way to seal over imitation gold leaf, which has copper in it that can tarnish when other sealers are used. With real gold leaf you really don't have to worry, so use a product that's easier to use.

Hi Nancy, A while ago we had contact about acrylic mediums like the airbrush medium that I use to thin acrylic paint. In the meantime I bought a Golden open intro set, to try this. Now I wonder, is there a preference which medium to use with the golden open paint? I don’t have a Golden medium (besides gac100 but Injse that to seal the wood panels), but I do have Liquitex airbrush medium and also Winsor & Newton gloss medium. In general I think most paints/brands go well with all kind of mediums since it’s all arylic based. But golden open is a bit different type of paint, so does it matter which one I use to thin the paint? And another question, I’m not sure if you mentioned it or someone else, but someone gave me the advice to use something different then gac100 to seal the back of a wood panel because gac100 is very expensive and a little bottle (for a big panel) even though it’s applied in thin layers. Now buying another can/bottle with a sealer (from a hardware store) would still be extra cost though. I used to seal fabric with a mix of water and woodglue. Works really well. Could even paint it with acrylics. But I’m not sure if it’s okay to seal the back of a woodpanel this way for a painting. It might yellow over time (?). Same maybe for sealer from a hardware store. Could this be a problem for a painting? Non acid-free glue/sealer….could it travel through the wood and effect the colors of the painting or the wood or cause some other issue? Thank you in advance for your reply. Best regards, Karin
@nancyreyner
@nancyreyner Ай бұрын
Hi Karin, The OPEN paint line has an OPEN medium. I recommend to use that medium with the OPEN paints. The binder is formulated differently for the OPEN. These dry from the inside out, while regular acrylic paints dry from the outside in. You can combine the OPEN with the regular acrylic paints (Heavy Body or fluid or HIgh Flow, etc) but you will get the longer open or wet time using the OPEN medium with the OPEN paints. You can use the other mediums you mentioned but you will be changing the open time of your paint mixtures if you combine those mediums with the OPEN. Regarding your other question about sealing wood, you can use most gloss acrylic mediums to seal wood - backs and fronts. You do want to use something that won't yellow, so I'd stick with fine art products. The Gloss Medium acrylic will work well. I don't think whatever you seal the back of wood panels with will affect the front of the panel. So for the backs and sides, you can use a commercial sealer. However, for the face I would definitely stick with a fine art product because using something at the base of your painting may very well seep through the layers of acrylic and cause yellowing or other issues later on.

@@nancyreyner Hi Nancy, thank you for your reply! Oh ofcourse, I didn’t think of that. Good that you mention it that the medium of a different brand has an effect on the open time of the golden paint. The mediums I have dry very quick so yes, better to buy golden medium. Can I buy the golden open thinner best then? I see there’s also open acrylic medium. I’d like to be able to use one medium for thinning the paint or to just make it a little more smooth (in case that’s necessary with golden open paint, haven’t tried it yet. It’s a very little bottle and the Golden products are very expensive, so hopefully I only have to buy one bottle. Will the thinner do? Is it comparible to gloss medium? Also, yes my intention was to only paint the back of the panel with something different like wood glue. If that won’t influence the front of the panel ofcourse. For sure I will use the gac100 for sealing the front of the panel. I was also wondering (since golden open paint is so expensive), can I paint the first few layers of a painting with normal acrylic paint, with the brands I have (W&N and Amsterdam) and paint with Golden Open on top of that? It’s more like study-quality, so would that be a problem for the golden Open paint to hold on that? Or will it be fine….even when I make a background with thicker layers of paint? (Maybe with a palette-knive). Have a nice day! Karin

@@karinvankempen6892 Hi Karin, In the future I suggest emailing me for lengthy replies instead of using KZbin. That would be much appreciated. In answer to your question, the OPEN thinner and OPEN medium are VERY different!! The medium won't dilute the paint, it can be added to paints to smooth out the application and/or to make the color more transparent. The thinner acts like water. In fact, I don't use the thinner at all, instead I use water to dilute the paints. Diluting paints breaks down the binder and is good for getting watercolor effects. You can definitely apply the regular acrylic first for one or more layers, then apply the OPEN. That is a great way to work, so that you are working with fast drying to get quicker results on underlying layers, then you can work slower on the top layer to give you more time to add details. Acrylic will usually stick to other acrylic, so the OPEN can be safely applied over regular acrylics, whether these are applied thinly or thickly. For the reverse, though, when you apply OPEN in one layer you should wait two weeks before applying regular acrylics over the OPEN. Again, please honor my request and email me if you have more to ask, instead of using KZbin comments section. Hope this information was helpful. Best wishes for your creative projects.

How do I varnish if I added a touch of interference paint to acrylic sky painting? I shouldn’t use liquitex matte medium and varnish? What varnish do I use?
@nancyreyner
@nancyreyner 3 ай бұрын
As long as you use a gloss varnish the interference will still have it's interesting color shift. if you use any matte, stain or semi-gloss, these products have a white powder in them which will diminish the interference effect. There are many varnishes to choose from. In my opinion the best varnish to use are the ones made especially for fine art paintings. These products have two important qualities that other varnishes do not have. They have UV protection in the product so that colors don't fade, and they are removable for cleaning purposes. If the product label does not have directions for removing the product once it has dried, it is a permanent varnish, not a removable one. The fact that it is removable adds a professional and archival touch to the work.

@nancyreyner
@nancyreyner 3 ай бұрын
@@salonitomar5761 Here is an article with more detail on how to choose the best sealant for the imitation gold leaf: nancyreyner.com/2017/06/22/prepare-gold-leaf-oil-painting/ Basically the solvent based sealers provide a stronger seal than the water-based ones (like GAC200). If you can spray outside, then there are many inexpensive options that you can purchase at hardware and home improvement stores, like Krylon's clear coats and other brands. If you can't do that, then the only non-toxic option is the GAC200. That medium can still tarnish your leaf if applied incorrectly. Read the article I mentioned above to make sure you don't apply it too thickly or in any way that keeps it from drying fast. Two coats is plenty if you are applying acrylic paint over it in thin layers. If you are over-painting with thick gels, pouring or sanding then you would need 4 coats. It sounds like you wanted to overpaint using one of the painting techniques described in my book Acrylic Illuminations. I'm happy to provide more information on any technique you don't understand. Just write back.

@nancyreyner 5 ай бұрын
If the painting is complete, and includes metal leaf and oil paint, then you can use any oil painting varnish. An oil painting varnish will be solvent-based and that means it will go well over both leaf and oil paint. If this is your last and final coat, I recommend using an archival varnish like Gamblin's Gamvar or Golden's Archival Varnish (spray). These products are removable for cleaning purposes. That's what makes them archival for fine art paintings. If you don't want that type of protection, you can always use any clear gloss spray. Sprays are usually solvent-based so they are fine for over oil paint and metal leaf. They aren't removable, though. There are many clear gloss sprays available. Krylon makes many different ones. I like their product with UV protection: amzn.to/3O0DRj8. Please note that brush applying a removable varnish, over oil paint, might actually soften the oil paint and remove it while you are brushing over it. Sprays are probably your best choice.
