No, Polestar is not a Chinese brand. It is very much a Swedish brand, headquartered in Sweden and an offshoot of Volvo. It is a part of the Geely Group, a Chinese group and they are the parent company. Polestar started as a Swedish racing company that then tuned Volvos and was purchased by Volvo who was purchased by Geely. But things get odd in that this is the only Polestar based on a Zeekr, not a Volvo. And Zeekr, while being a Chinese brand, are designed in Sweden and has part of its operation in Sweden. So, the Polestar 4 has Zeekr like qualities like a horizontal/landscape console screen and the whole shape and framework of a lot of it comes from the Zeekr001 as does the platform. The materials come from Volvo and the tuning/suspension is Polestar. Polestar is an alternative Volvo, sleeker design and sportier driving.

European reviewers seem to forget that EV's from China are charged a hefty tax which adds to the price. Somehow Tesla is cheaper over there. Luckily in Australia we get the China exports a lot cheaper which is a massive positive and a lot better quality than Tesla in my opinion which is plain boring (plus the Musk factor)

The UK only has 10% tariffs on Chinese EV’s. Unlike Europe which is going up to 35%. The price of £45k is approx AUD$90k so someone is making a lot of money on BYDs in the UK. Given the impending luxury tax for EVs over £40k I suspect this price gouging will significantly impact BYD sales in the UK. Given BYDs history of aggressive pricing when it needs too. I’d like to think this car will need to drop to under £40k, lest it fail.

The chinese cars will be coming hard next year. They got the exterior right from now on. Now they need to focus on the interior which will be the easy part for them. They don´t need to follow the europeen standard which we see. They love to make their cars like a big bed which I love. If you think about it, your car can be like a tent and you can just sleep there instead of hotel or airbnb. Also the designs are different in China. Alot smarter designs and with accessories

I think it’s the form factor I want. In Australia I am not sure if or how battery swap would work, but if it was not too much fuss to have a smaller battery then swap when it was time for a road trip, use the big one on the road trip, then return home and swap back to your own battery. That could be smarter than buying a big battery when you only need a big one 6 trips a year. You just need one swap station in your city if it is treated as hire a big battery for the holiday.

I'm currently driving a Tesla M3 SR. Even this 60KWh battery is by far more than enough for my daily commute and I'm in the lucky situation to charge at home over night. Only time I do longer trips is during vacation and this is when I have time to take a break every now and then. To be honest, my body needs coffee discharge and refill more often than the car needs the battery recharged... So, while I understand that there are people with different usage profiles, for me a huge battery or swapping station wouldn't be of much benefit.

The EU doesn't allow larger batteries than the car was purchased with. NIO doesn't allow battery swapping when you have bought the battery. So no, the flexibility isn't there. Also, NIO is way too expensive. They charge as much for cars where you rent the battery as others do for the complete car. I'm not spending 60k and then another few hundred per month. Besides, installing a battery swapping station is very expensive, and it only makes sense for NIO if they sell a ton of these. Which they currently don't. Europe has different population distribution and driving patterns than China. Also, you can swap a battery in 5 minutes and go from near 0 to full (best case scenario, probably never going to happen without a quick top up or two along the way). With modern EVs, you can do 10-80 in 10 minutes. But not just once in a blue moon when you are really lucky to have a swapping station along the way, but in many, many places. Seems much more useful to me. And charging speeds are still improving, we'll be at 5 minutes for 10-80 at some point. At which I ask: Where is the NIO advantage? And I can guarantee that there'll be more high speed chargers that can do that than battery swapping stations for a single brand. If NIO were selling shit loads of cars, like 30 % of all EVs, then yeah. But they will never be able to do it.
@EVdotcom11 күн бұрын
@@kadajawi2 thanks for sharing this. While battery swapping is great, ur right, they are always trying to outrun charging times which are constantly improving. I still think the advantages are strong and can improve vehicle longevity. Also, many brands have signed deals with NIO to use their stations so they could potentially become and industry standard. Let’s see
@kadajawi210 күн бұрын
@EVdotcom Considering how long batteries actually last I don't think it's necessary. At least in this form. Should batteries be accessible and swappable given a couple of hours at the workshop? Yes. But they don't have to be swapped in an instant I could see this tech for busses or lorries. I could also see it for taxis and such that are operated in a single city for example. For ordinary people, not so much. The advantage is too small in a few years. And it will take a few years until, if all goes well, an acceptable-ish swapping network has been established. Now if swapping to larger batteries were possible, maybe. But even then, prices need to go way down. And yeah, I invested in them a while ago. Hopefully they reconsider and focus on making good EVs that charge fast... and at best have swapping as an additional option. Though really, will anyone care when charging happens just as fast, but at many more locations?
