Why is the top 1/2" of threads missing in each head bolt hole ? Could it be that is part of the reason these blow so many head gaskets ?

There are two vairables that noone that shows these videos adress. (1) The starting point of where the injector pump is sitting in the slot. (2) The positionof the dial indicator in the holder / how far in , as deep enough to get the full reading but or deep enough to damafe to indicator on the high cam of it.

Integrated mains are NOT a "better" idea....esp. on the older 1.6 engines. Integrated mains have approx. only 60% of the original thrust bearing surface (at best). They are easier for putz mechanics to install though. And, I have NEVER seen integrated mains in the stock 1.6 engines. and I have taken lots of them apart to rebuild. You find them on on 1.6 engines which have been "rebuilt" by putz's. The whole idea of less wear surface on the 1.6's is critical due to an entirely different clutch/flywheel system which manages to shove the crank forward EVERY time the clutch pedal is pushed upon. I rebuild alh's and I NEVER install integrated mains.

bhw pistons are 18.5 compression ratio vs 19.5 on stock alh. if you are running big nozzles the injection pressure is lowered too. These 2 factors make for ease of start and a smooth and clean running engine. Did you experience hard starting with this lower compression ratio and bigger nozzle combination?

Weber carburettors are a great engineering feat that are as close to fuel injection due to their ability of being tuned across all the fuel delivery circuits. But! Before they behave there are several things that MUST be sorted first. Enemy number 1 is air intake leaks & secondly, exhaust leaks. 3. Fuel pressure must be kept low and consistent like another post mentioned 2-3 psi. 4. Timing should be advanced a few degrees (3-5) at first then finally adjusted once jetting is in a healthy range. So what’s a healthy range? Biscuit coloured plugs and tail pipe & you will feel the engine pull the car hard when the secondary circuit kicks in. You will also hear a definitive crackle throughout the exhaust. You will know it when you hear it. Now you can advance the timing just prior to it pinging. Pinging is bad, so if you can set it a few degrees short of that it should be ok.

Thank you for the comment. After setting up this carburetor as seen in the video, the vehicle has performed flawlessly. Maybe you’re referring to a different style of carburetor which had a larger adjustment range. On these if the adjuster screw has to be turned out more than 2 turns (if I remember correctly) then it needs to be jetted differently. Cheers.

@jazjaz2364

the free pulley (between injection pulley and vilebrequin pulley) makes turning a shaft connected to the vacuum pump. The oil pump is related to the vacuum pump by a long axle. When the vacuum pump turns, the oil pump turns. So, if you have no vacuum pump, your oil pump can not work.

Been having an issue getting pump timing re-established on a current mess. Your gauge looked like the one I got in an EWK set so I just went out to check mine. I was treating mine (somehow) as having SAE measurements so I was setting mine at ~39 to get that 1mm. DAMNIT ALL was I way off. It's also a bloody metric gauge. No wonder the thing runs like shit...barely getting it to start. As soon as I get the chance...back out I go to try setting it up proper.

Came across your post as I'm looking up how to set up injection timing after replacing my timing belt, quick question, at the 2:07 minute mark I notice your block off plate is tapped, is this to relieve the pressure from blow by? I have a mk2 jetta diesel and wanted to also accomplish this but not sure what size I should tap it for. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

There is a hole in the center of the injection pump on the fuel line side. Install your gauge with I believe 1.5/2mm of preload then zero the gauge. Loosen the pump bolts at the accessory bracket and you can rotate the pump to meet the desired spec.

Change the jets in your carb to the same ones I did in the video. Also check your oil for gas, you may need to change your oil after re-jetting the carb. Hopefully that will get you in range to make adjustments.

I put one of these on a Ford inline-6 200cid/3.3L, and in stock setup it was super lean... Now running 85/65 Idle Jets, 160/150 Primary Jets. But I also have dual 2.5" exhaust also at 1000' elevation. I also noticed the floats weren't adjusted right, and I needed a fuel pressure regulator b/c my pump was pushing 7 psi. It's now 2-3 psi.

A air fuel gauge might be needed to help track down what’s going on. Is it running rich up top? Or lean? A air fuel gauge will tell you that.

Idle and low to half throttle is great .Very nice to drive Emulsion tube is important , where holes are placed . Im playing now with emulsions holes and air corrector to get mixture perfect to all throttle openings Take out emulsion tubes and look where holes are located . On top - weaks low rpm mixtures , mid is for mid range , and holes on bottom are for high rpm .

Incorrect. This is actually my pet peeve when it comes to automotive pronunciations. Rudolph Diesel's last name is pronounced, "deez-il", you may look it up. Our bastardized and lazy pronunciation of it is just as bad as if a German claimed that the correct pronunciation of "gasoline" is pronounced "gaz-o-lyne".
