Empire maintenance is never a problem late game, just pop some general governors down early game and just let them gain xp through the whole game, once you hit about 80-90 percent EM use all the skill points you have saved up on the lower EM skills, one level four general can get EN down to 6 percent. Always wait until the EM is pretty high before you start lowering it because it’s a percentage based, so if you start lower it at around 50 percent EM the skill that lowers 2 percent EM will only lower one percent in reality. The empire governing type is the best for late game, the increase party loyalty and 2 more edicts are worth it. Plus it’s always nice to create a empire when you have painted half the map

Pike man are great but they are not that great in offensive battle though, like you have to walk them in a rain of javelins to the enemy and by that time they have lost like 20 percent of their men. Sometimes they don’t even line up right so you have to drag them back and reform them, honestly just use silver shield swords man once the reform is enabled, they are even better swords man than Roman legionnaire

The strongest army in DEI will always be horse archer plus horse archer cataphract units, all horse army have huge campaign map movement rang, pretty much unbeatable one on one against any AI army, they just don’t perform well in sieges, you need like one infantry siege army for walled settlement and the rest horse armies, even though they are not as crazy as Hunnic horse archer spam in Attila but they are still pretty op in DEI. Just don’t bring all light horse archer army, to be effective after all the arrows are gone this kind of army needs at least 5 units of cataohract archers to kill of tough infantry or intercept incoming heavy cavalry

do you know why i can no longer recruit apulian heavy infantry ? i was able to have them in my early armies but after some time it says "different type of reform needed" that was after some further development of my faction and highest level of reforms already reached ... am i actually only able to have them in early game with low tier reforms ? i play as massalia . also after i captured some steppe regions i was able to recruit 4 cataphracts , but i only recruited 3 (wanted to have 1 unit available to recruit later) but they actually completely disapeared from the recruitment roster - why is this so ?

Its their versatility. They can go toe to toe with almost anything. Anything thats in the same tier or lower they will destroy, elite units that outclass them will get out of a fight with them quite mauled or very heavily damaged making it a very favourable trade. But where they really shine is if you can keep them in reserve aslong as possible using auxillia or cavalry to do the early fighting and only then deploy the cohorts. They are robust enough to then wipe the floor with anything they encounter.

The supply system is not working as intended, it's a funny idea but not working at all. Even if you have like 25 food factionwide and your city has 5 food/supply, your army will still starve to death. They can't eat the food infront of them.

i´m currently doing a massalia campaign . first i took the entire province of my capital city and then hostile iberian cities . after that i went north and took hostile barbarian settlements . i trade and made defensive/non aggresion/ally pacts with all the rest friendly iberian and celtic tribes and also rome and carthage . i never attack friendly nations , i build relations with them over time . i had around 10 settlements in total at that point and i was only surrounded by allied nations - next step was to focus everything on economy growth so i turtled up , earning cash with minimal army upkeeps and developed my cities for the next 50?60? turns . thought i watched with growing concernes romes fast and aggressive expancionalism . they took over all of north africa and also all the islands in the mediterranean sea , and all sicily (save syracuse) , they also took coastal areas of illyria ... and then one turn i got the pop up window that they attacked my lusitani iberian ally - this was the key decision to make , the one that would basically determine the course of the entire campaign . the easy way was to betray my ally and side with rome , iberians had very weak defences at that time and all of iberia could have been taken in a few turns plus i would have had even better relations with the romans - they were at war with basically everybody in the region but me at that point ... the hard way was to hold my alliance and fight the roman monster (i knew they would be even harder to fight once they hit marian reforms - they would be basically unstopable and very hard to deal with spamming full stacks of legionaries) ... i chose to fight against rome - it was a real pain in the a.zz to deal with all their armies plus i had to deal with countless slave revolts within my empire once the war started , every turn i got 2 or 3 full stack rebellion armies on top of dealing with the romans . it nearly ruined my economy , at the start of war i had 250K gold , by the time all the dust settled down i had less than 100K , but in the end i managed to stabilize , push romans back from coastal areas of north africa and i took all of italy . they still have carthage and a few african settlements but they are not nearly as dangerous as they were before . lusitani and my own armies will probably finish them off soon. currently i´m earning stacks of cash and i´ on the way to get lvl 5 imperium and thorax reforms ... so my strategy advice - take nearest hostile settlements and really any you can get your hands on VS hostile nations early on . establish all the trade and non-aggression pacts you can with anybody who is willing to do them (this is really important and should be done on turn 1) your relations with multiple nations will improve over time and they will offer you other deals , many times allied army solved rebellions for me and beat the slave armies while i had no army of my own in the area. after you take hostile cities and establish diplomacy you can then turtle up and build your cities and economy , focus on philosophy and construction research , i never focused too much on the military (at least not) early on . the core of your armies will be massilian hoplites , massilian citizen cav and a bit later a good unit of celto-hellenic sword infantry (you can basically mass produce them and they are very decent) . once you take south of italy you get access to some of the great roman sword units (but you only get to recruit limited amount of them so be careful not to get them killed).

Every hoplite unit is OP in melee coz they have prolly +5 hidden bonus to attack (in phalanx) which makes them better than cohort aquilae or legionari veterani. Dont get me wrong i want the hoplites to be good for price but when i see garrison local militia hoplites beat legionari veterani i am really pissed. AND IN THE GAME DESCRIBED SWORDS GOOD AGAINST SPEARS AND WALLS. I do play on higher difficulty but even on normal diff hoplites are OP in dei.

A bit outdated now as modern version DEI Epirus no longer has a navy or the agents and the Syrian elephants are replaced with Indian elephants. That said a lot is still applicable. Wherever you go, you gotta go all in since you’re right next to Rome. You either put all your military into taking Rome out, or you leave Italy and go all in on Greece. I myself use this Epirus DEI reforms submod that gives you Latin influenced Epirus soldiers such as sanity swords and Etruscan hoplites and you then get stuff like Italian-Hellenic pikes/cavalry after to take all of Italy (one of its requirements before you get to use the units). Taking on Rome really isn’t bad as long as you know what you’re doing and you can micro to minimize losses, I’ve taken Rome out in 5 turns on a few Epirus campaigns. You gotta go all out aggression to kill Rome before they get random legions spawning in on you. That said soon as you do, you got a top 3 province to develop while you can then focus on Sicily for an agriculture province and staging ground vs Carthage and having Italy lets you field an army to work your way into Greece as well so you can play on two fronts. Epirus is my favorite faction :D and I’d argue it’s the strongest turn one faction because it has Thureos units turn one, you get great mercenary options as well and you get agriarians as a core roster unit. Lancer cavalry and great standard pikes with bronze shields. Early Epirus is very flexible to fight anything the AI has overall.

Cavalry in general is just insanely strong, and the ai for Rome 2 will never be as good as a player so that counts pretty big as well. I try to give myself rules I have to abide by, like for example only 2 units of cav for my Roman armies, or keeping the general units always in the back unless a crazy event happens. Try to keep it realistic. Hope your enjoying yourself!

@@Vlad-wl3fw Honestly fighting the ai is often quite easy, I try not to be too "Meta-y" during them but Rome in particular didn't have their best units. Also Rome is usually very distracted with 6 + wars at any one time. They also screwed up by throwing a few 20 stack armies at me in transport ships so that was easy pickings. After I finish my Caesar campaign I'll be looking to do some really hard campaigns. My Parthian campaign was by far the hardest one I've completed although it was a lot of fun! @@PyromaN93 Marian reforms erased the division of wealth by completely restructuring the military in both organization and outfitting. Post-marian soldiers had different pay structures, different gear, different organization, and recruited from no particular social strata. To say that both counts as legionaries seems like very reductive way of telling just how different the legionaries were. Also, this video is definitely talking about post-marian soldiers and Hannibal fought pre-marian soldiers and probably would not have survived under a more modern Roman legion
