That is great that your grafts have a good success rate even when you do them in the middle of winter. What is your temperature like in there? How well do the trees handle being awake that early before they can go outside?
@HigosRarosDelMundo27 күн бұрын
Hi Kevin! The temperature ranges from 72 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, they grow quite a bit by the time spring comes and I have to protect them with a shade cloth when I introduce them to 🌞 sunlight.

Nice update, I only recently found your channel when I was Ill over Christmas, I watched a ton of your videos, I really like the ones where you and your friend Carlos are showing all the Pons figs, it's great that you can ripen then in New York. I'm in the UK, we have a milder winter, but a much cooler summer, so we need greenhouses to get a chance to get them to ripen. I get bored in winter too, I really miss when my trees are growing, all the best and I wish you a good growing season this year, Steve

How long do you keep them in these bags and then what do you up pot them to?
@FigCzar28 күн бұрын
I keep them in the bags till they fill it with roots ,I up-pot usually to an one gallon pot or a 10" by 4" tree pot!

what fertilizer you using in the fig pops?
@FigCzar29 күн бұрын
@petergraves9006 I'm using Miracle Grow,Shake and Feed all purpose, it's just an experiment 😉 in regards to the fertilizer ,it would not help the rooting process.

Is that regular potting soil?
@FigCzar29 күн бұрын
@SuperNebula123 Yes! You could use Miracle Grow, Pro Mix BX or Sunshine Mix ,any of these will work, the most important factor is to put the right amount of water when preparing your Potting Mix!

Impressive success. Thanks for sharing! I am rooting 3 mulberry cuttings of one variety right now, and I find myself wishing I had tried pre-rooting at least one of them like this. They are all in soil, and I am really hoping ONE of them roots and grows well. That’s all I need. 🤞🤞

Carlos, hello! I have a question about your Moro de Caneva tree, which you mention is grafted. I'm wondering what it is grafted onto, for the rootstock? I am contemplating what to do with my MdC in terms of grafting it onto something, and I assume you are happy with what you've got - if not please elaborate. If you did the graft yourself, what factors did you take into account when choosing the rootstock for this potted plant?
@FigCzar29 күн бұрын
@ivyfasko9699 Hi! I graft on any rootstock available that is healthy and vigorous ,most of my trees are grafts, and I'm very happy with the results, by the way I'm Alex ,and most of Carlos's trees are in their own roots,except for all the ones I have gifted him or the 30 + varieties he is babysitting 😀 for me!
@ivyfasko969929 күн бұрын
@FigCzar Hi Alex, are you the man who does the filming of the videos? I've always wondered who was behind those. Anyway I'm new to figs and grafting both, and so I do a lot of research to try and build my knowledge and it seems like the brown turkey is a good root stock to use as it's really vigorous, etc. But my dilemma is that I don't have any trees big enough to graft on to. My Chicago Hardy (another decent choice) is just 2.5 years old and maybe not so big, so I'm looking to find something to purchase that I can use as a base for grafting, Maybe a few trees. It's not really a rush because it's going to be winter for a while and I guess I shouldn't be doing much grafting until spring, but being the person I am, I like to get my supplies in order before I need them. Thnx for answering my question!

Do you water the trees when they are dormant and indoors?
@FigCzarАй бұрын
@ultraviolet5829 The ones indoors in the basement with grow lights, yes. The other ones I check them every 3 weeks to see if they need water ,besides that I mist them with water periodically to improve humidity and health of the trees!

I haven't tried any grafting yet. I should give it a try. Spring always passes so quickly that the buds have already broken before I think of it. Maybe this spring. I noticed the fly trap tapes you have hanging. I had a problem with fungus gnats and used those yellow traps you stick in the soil but that just catches the hatched gnats. I read you can use 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 4 parts water mixed and sprayed on the surface of the soil to kill the eggs and larvae. I tried it and it killed like 99.99 percent of the flies. I've only seen a couple now so hopefully that solved my gnat problem.
@FigCzarАй бұрын
You should try grafting 😉 I hang the fly traps once I have trees inside .For me, it is a game changer ,it doesn't eliminate all of them, but at least I control 😉 most of any infestation that may arise!I don't like the yellow traps(waste of money) 😉
@PodcastOnTheSpectrum29 күн бұрын
@@FigCzar What kind of traps do you use? Solid useful videos by the way!
Heck yeah man this is exactly what I needed. Your videos are super helpful and informative. I cant look away from the video because all your words seem to be helpful in one way or another. So did you add water to the air layers before putting them away? The answer must be: "it depends" right? I have to see if the soil is dry. It rained and I dont know if it gets wet inside. Wish I had more time for my neglected figs. Your collection is admirable. And your work is really great!! Cant imagine you get much sun there with all the buildings. If I was to guess, I'd say queens. I watched a few of your older videos. I started taking notes - you have a section now. I'm going to have to get a couple of trees now because of you. I seriously have no more room. Anything else will pretty much be in shade except for an hour or so. But the two you talked about that you loooove so much and now I need to own are these: Tia Penya and Del Vista. Well that's what I think you said. In your October fig videos. One variety in each. If you can confirm those names, that would be super helpful. I'll go post on the video directly.....thanks again
@edslim718Ай бұрын
I really enjoyed that. TY for sharing your experience You look like you know what you're doing...can I ask a tangential question? I have a bunch of air layers on my trees that are pretty much dormant at this point. The air layers have roots and I should have cut them weeks ago. What should I do with them now? If I cut them now and pot them, will at least the roots grow and be saved? If I leave them on the tree, wont the roots die?
I hope all your trees are ok through winter, I enjoy watching your videos, from UK

Alex, what were your top five figs this year?
@FigCzarАй бұрын
@ghamandi Hi! This was one of my worst seasons 😪 in regards to ripening good quality fruits from my trees because of all the time I was away. Of the few, I was able to taste I would say: Del Bisbe MP,Nv1,Capoll Curt Negra MP, Tia Penya MP and Castagnat FDM. I would go all season long, just eating figs from my strain of Del Bisbe MP variety. Hopefully, next season will be better, and I will sample more of the varieties I have .

I'm going to keep with the hobby, but I may add automated watering so I have peace of mind when I'm traveling. I don't really need to add more,I don't have the space and is too much work ,any way ,it would take years to develop and sample the ones that I already have!😊

Amazing amount of fig trees. We all do the same thing walk around feeling the last figs of the year hoping to feel a ripe one. lol question: Do you provide any water during the winter storage period?
@FigCzar2 ай бұрын
@ultraviolet5829 Hi! Yes! I check them every 3 weeks and water the ones in need ,the ones that are unreachable,I just spray water with a hose! I also spray them lightly from time to time to keep them hydrated , it's the way I take care of my trees 🌳 😌 my not be necessary, but it works for me!
