What Makes FNaF Designs Scary?

In, not defense of the newer designs but kinda, I feel like FNaF has been infantalized since ~FNaF 5. Scott realized alot of his playerbase were young kids, and he changed the styles accordingly. Let kids experience horror. Let kids experience dark themes. It's not gonna make them a psycho, it'll give them insight that'll be useful later in life. One more time for the people in the back: Let kids experience horror.

I mean, your disbelief is suspended when things are happening so fast as the animatronics come at you. A good amount of the designs suffice in that regard. When you start to think about the logistics of it, it's like a magician revealing their tricks. It's not about how realistic they are. It's how they present themselves to the player. Exposed endo bits are gonna be scarier than just a fur suit thrown on an endo.

bro quite literally missed the point of the characterisation of the animatronics in the fnaf movie. also, the animatronics were implied to be haunted in the very first game. the news papers on the walls state that 5 kids went missing, were never found, and that after the incident the animatronics started smelling like rotting corpses and acted strange.

It's always bothered me when people criticized later animitronics for being to unrealistic. Animatronics can't walk. They generally need to be bolted down so they don't fall over. They definitely can't location map or recognize types of noise. FNAF started out with machines beyond our current capabilities, of course they get more and more intense over time.

Their eyes are so amazing, even when you choose to read emotions. W. Bonnie looks like he purely is there to hurt you, he only left the storage room to hurt someone. W. Chica is going to just stand still and vaguely in your direction, and when you slowly wonder if she's deactivated because she isn't moving. You'll realize that she was staring you in the eyes, there is no mercy in those lifeless eyes. W. Foxy when at the end of the wall is not just there to take out a guard, say what you want. But look how he stands, look how he stares you down. I don't care if you disagree, W. Foxy is enjoying it. W. Freddy just wants to go hunting. He knows you're there, but he's not worried you'll escape, like in the game over screen, he's admiring his handywork. Watching as the life leaves the guard's eyes. I understand the "unfeeling machine" aspect. But the withered animatronics come after you because they want Afton. It only makes sense that they enjoy their opportunity, even if it is never him and the cycle will continue. They'll enjoy the hunt. I kinda rambled a lot, wowsers.

The withereds weren't abandoned, they were dismantled for any parts they -needed- wanted. Jaw motor? Chica permanent smile! Scraps of shell casing? Foxy and Freddy! Need arm parts to give Mango another extra limb, or Toy Bonnie a face and eyes? Bonnie is in agony after being mutilated!

Its always annoyed me that fnaf has never focused on what it scary. That "blink and you'll miss it" type of horror. All games past 1 think that the mascots themselves are scary, they are now. Its the uncanny feeling of "I know that its just a robot, but it feels like its staring at me and isnt supposed to move"

It took me a while to watch this one cuz an hour and fifteen minutes is intimidating and when I did watch it I had to do it in two sittings, but I made sure to come back to it later because you are genuinely one of my top 3 favorite KZbinrs on the entire platform right now, your videos are brimming with style and you deserve to be way bigger than you are. But I think ~40 minutes is the ideal length for videos like this. I think the unpolished games video worked because each game was so unique from each other that it didn’t really get boring, but this video was kinda repetitive. It was still a great video but I think you could have split it in half, like with one for “adventure games” and one for “points / score games”. It seemed like half of this video was about how wacky and weird these old score based games are, and half was about the different approaches to (and jankiness of) more familiar / standard types of games. This video would be 53 minutes without the score games and you could have played some more of those to make that it’s own video Also, the thumbnail on this one looked different from the others, so I didn’t recognize it as your video right away. I think you should have put a drawing of a character in the foreground like you did for the others. If you’re just doing these videos for fun then tbh you should ignore my criticism, but I’m saying this cuz this content really does deserve more views

30:45 I don't think fazbear Entertainment actually designed their personalities, as far as i remember they are all basically mimic AIs but instead of mimicking humans they just injected them with all of the TV shows so they would act like the TV show characters Freddy got extremely lucky that he was depicted as a caring and loving leader Chica is the foodie in the show so the animatronic is also obsessed with food even though she can't even taste it Roxy is the cool girl so the animatronic must always look cool and perfect And Monty is the rockstar that probably destroys his guitar in almost every episode so the animatronic must also constantly destroy stuff They are simply mimicing themselves to the point the AI Flanderizes themself into devolping disorders

Nice video. I'll only have to disagree with your "Step 4: Don't use save states". While I agree they aren't going to make you better at the game if you use them just to inch your way to the credits, they are a powerful practice tool for difficult bosses, stages, or sections you would otherwise have to play through from the beginning of the game to try and relearn. After all, if you can consistently beat stage 1 to 4 without dying, it doesn't make much sense to keep going back through them if your current goal is to learn stage 5.

The arcade game is designed for repeat play that progress more quickly through the game on repeated pays. This is why adhering to conventions present when the game was in it's original setting. For instance. To save a state when a password is offered would not break the intent of the design as you are just saving the effort of writing it down with a pen and paper. If no passwords are offered, you should stick to the default settings or adjust the difficulty for a slightly altered experience.

8:08 Ahhh yes, classic arcade game design. This is sometimes referred to as "Gradius Syndrome." I recommend looking it up, but essentially when arcade games feature power ups and you lose them upon death it makes the game harder if not impossible. Playing after losing your power ups is sometimes referred to as "recovery." If you're trying to 1cc a lot of older arcade games, you'll sometimes find that the idea is to "no miss" the game, aka finish the game without dying, because dying is so bad in regards to your ability to kill enemies.

I absolutely love the different threads you used to connect the different games on the list (Altered Beast into Flicky through Sonic 1, the differences between NBBM and Dynamite Dux), it made for a very compelling watch. I've been playing through a lot of Sega arcade experiences through my modded Mega Drive and Saturn recently, and a big part of their appeal was getting into that mindset you mentioned at the end. It's very rewarding getting farther and farther into games like Virtua Fighter, Sonic 1 and Sega Rally Championship (my fave so far) without abusing the continue system and letting the game overs come through naturally. Great essay!

20:15 Defender 2000's soundtrack by Alistair Lindsay is one of the earliest games I can think of that uses sampling, and it's exclusively hard-hitting Williams arcade sound effects. It really feels like a proper tribute to arcade games that deserves more love. Helps that the music itself also slaps insanely hard--both in harsh MOD file format and polished redbook audio
