@@confusedpsyduck714is not a bad word, it just has a much more specific meaning than how people often use it. People throw the word around a lot to mean "skinny young looking white guy" when it's meant to specifically refer to twiggy, non-muscular hairless young gay men. There's also Bears, who are fat hairy older gay men. They're very different kinds of men, polar opposites in many ways. Everyone has their tastes and they're meant to be labels to help gay guys explain the kind of men they're into. Referring to any skinny dude as a twink usually results in gets a few of the lables wrong. I've seen skinny buff guys called twinks. I've seen skinny hairy guys called twinks. I've even seen guys with a bit of a gut called twinks. Look up Chipp or Anji from Guilty Gear. I've seen people call them twinks. Knowing the actual meaning of the word and hearing people say that boggles my mind sometimes lol. It's not a bad word at all, but people use it wrong all the time and some people get annoyed by that

I think pikmin 1 has the same vibes as some of these games. It contrasts a lot with the later games that go for realism. I think forest navel shows this the best. Apparently its supposed to be a cave? It has cliffs that lead to endless darkness. There's two really weird bosses. One jump scares you and shakes it's knees at you one of them mind controls your pikmin. Bread bug is there as the only roaming enemy. There's also just a lot of weird design choices, like why does olimar look like that in his health bar or what are the gates supposed to be, they look like they are made from packing peanuts. I think it's also a game filled with mystery. There's a bunch of enemies you could miss seeing in a playthrough, there's rumours like beady long legs escaping it's arena. There's beta footage in the game with completely different enemy placements. It basically has it all
@Sdat_online
@Sdat_online 6 ай бұрын
I feel like pikmin 2 also has a lot of this too, especially in the caves and with the odd juxtaposition of real world items everywhere. Certainly more polished and tutorial exposition heavy, but still weird and vibey to sit with
@concept8192
@concept8192 6 ай бұрын
Yeah it's a lot less polished and more surreal. If you play it on real hardware like I do (gamecube) the darker and lower brightness output makes it kinda unsettling actually. The distant spring is full of Bulbears that could annihilate your entire squad in seconds, and they have these weird pulsing spots that never came back again. And yeah, the enemy reel during the credits is full of oddities. I'm honestly kinda sad they rerecorded it for the switch release to fix it.

Pikmin 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games of all time. The atmosphere is simply unmatched I don't think a game like Pikmin 2 will ever be made again by Nintendo, the difficulty is just so unhinged that it makes you wonder how this is coming from Nintendo but it's oddly so engaging It's not so hard it's impossible and unfun, it's just...surprising, and I love it for that No other Pikmin does it as well as the first two for me, especially 4, I hate that they basically did a full timeline retcon with 4 if they're continuing with its plot instead of the subtle world that was being built throughout the first two games

I'm only about halfway through this video, but I think I know exactly what you mean. I've always had a soft spot for unpolished games, and sometimes I feel a little bad that I don't enjoy the more popular 'sanitized' ones that come out nowadays. The visual progress is impressive, and a lot of games of the last decade are downright gorgeous, but I think I'll always prefer the low res, pixel-y, weird style of the past. Janky mechanics are another quick way to endear me to an older or indie game, but they tend to just be annoying when coupled with modern graphics. I dunno, maybe I just focus too much on aesthetics. I'm really, really excited for your channel to get the attention it deserves. Your videos have this really calming vibe about them that I can't quite put my finger on, but its made you one of my favorite KZbinrs since the FNaF design video. The way you insert your persona into different settings is SO cool, I don't think I've seen anyone do that before. I hope the numbers don't get to you, but if they do, remember that there are people who really enjoy what you're doing. Social media can make us forget that 50, 100, 1,000 people seeing something you made is still a lot! As long as this is making you happy, please keep it up! I'll be waiting eagerly for the next video :]

This is the reason why I abruptly stopped playing new horizons randomly one day about a month after release. I thought it was stupid how I was using my free time basically doing digital chores to pay off a digital loan. No hate for people who like these kinds of games but I get no joy out of decorating which is the large majority of the game’s appeal. Without that it’s just an adulting simulator with a cutesy aesthetic.

Minecraft's End Poem is so meaningful because it's so existentially comforting and uplifting. The fact that the writer was offered millions of dollars by Microsoft but not only turned the money away, but put the poem in the public domain after having an existential awakening after tripping out in the woods is such a crazy thing to think about, but I wholeheartedly respect Julian Gough for not selling out and understanding that the game's end poem touched a lot of people and is genuinely emotionally moving even divorced from the game itself. It's really existential, but is also empowering and genuinely sweet. The phrase "And the universe said 'I love you', because you are loved" is such a beautiful message to the reader.

@@Tsukistar1 time is best spent on the things that move us than trying to make the project car move under its own weight. There's a lot to lose ,mainly time, investing into a discourse and message whose themes Im already far from resonant with, and whose cost to be so can't be justified. I read it and I get nothing. I listen to video about it and I get nothing. I read a comment and I get nothing, and I read a reply to the comment and I get nothing. Upon reconsideration, my verdict is cringe. How many more times do you want me to stare at this until something hits me? Good things don't need to be entirely self evident, but at least a few of the bread crumbs leading to the bigger picture do. This has none of that. This has a series of words that I can not remember one single word of after the last punction mark. It's cringe at best and a complete non starter at worst.

32:41 I've developed a trick to getting them, where I put a creeper in a boat, then have that boat between me and a skeleton. On Bedrock, a Skeleton in a boat can shoot the mob in the driver's seat, meaning that it'll basically do all the work itself; on Java, it's a bit trickier because that doesn't work, so you either have to finagle with strafing to make sure the skeleton doesn't enter the boat, get a second boat to put the skeleton in, or wait until it's day so the skeleton will only run around shaded areas, drastically reducing its mobility.

what a lovely video! I especially loved the section about animal crossing. As someone who grew up playing the animal crossing games as they were released, I can say I do miss some of the bold swings they took creatively with the older games, but I also sort of feel like the series grew up alongside me in a way? The jank of gamecube AC hits even harder when you're a kid with no internet and games are still kind of a black box. The experimental music, the claustrophobic ambience, and some of the un-intuitive game design all lead to this very visceral experience, like you're really moving to a new town all on your own. I can't say I'm resentful of losing that with the newer games. There are definitely design choices in new horizons and even new leaf that I dislike compared to gamecube and DS, but even if they went back and added dialogue or missing game features, they could never add back in that mystery. I don't need to ask my mom to buy me a game guide anymore or trust playground rumors, I can just google what my chances are of seeing the whale on kapp'n's boat, or how to gain access to the lighthouse, or what art is real or fake. I get different joys out of NL and NH, like the satisfaction of managing my town and befriending my villagers and expressing myself creatively through decorating. I'm glad you went back and revisited GC for this video and got to experience at least some of the feelings that the game conveys, even if a lot of older AC fan's memories of the game, of that experience, are now essentially lost to time. And on top of sharing your experience so well with words, the editing and music were just wonderful! I especially loved the animation you made of the radio. thanks for posting something so thought provoking and well made! liked and subbed!

I was repeatedly positively surprised by the production value, the cleverness of certain jokes (like the fake out ad read- which I fully admit I skipped immediately, got confused, and had to rewind to), and the aspects of the games you chose to highlight. This video was a crazy breath of fresh air in an unfortunately kinda stagnant genre rn, keep your work creative, keep your work passionate, and most of all keep posting it for me watch!!!

everything about this video is really good. the author and I agree on a lot of points during the minecraft section - a lot of the charm of the game for me was the old art and while the new stuff is nice, it does detract from the soul of minecraft a fair bit, at least for me. this is also a video about games that I love, the games that you don't feel like you're supposed to be playing yet, that are unpolished noticeably but you love it anyway - I've wanted to capture that feel for so so goddamn long. PS1 Crash Bandicoot 1's vertex colors and floating point inaccuracies. Animal Crossing's Japanese mythos ties leading to just a weird game in the US. jank is something that games don't really capture nowadays but it's also something that I loved seeing in games, and something I want to try to capture in my work. thank you for making this video.

It’s cool to see someone put into words what drew me to video games since I was a kid. My fascination with novelty and experimentation above all else led to fixation on games like the first Wario Ware and Animal crossing, even before release, just from promotion in Nintendo Power. Like many other late-millennials who got an N64 for Christmas ‘96 and GameCube in ‘01, I played the Mario/Rare games, and all the other major releases that sadly trickled out. But the weirder third-party games like Mischief Makers always compelled me the most when friends were drawn to the Final Fantasies and Resident Evils and Time Splitters. As a High School senior in ‘09, disillusioned by the Wii and jealous of my PS3-owning friends, I read about Shenmue and bought a Dreamcast, which led to the rabbit hole of the Saturn and Sega-CD. All consoles that every kid heard about but never encountered; making them all the more fascinating in retrospect. To this day, that run of Sega consoles is still my favorite part of gaming. Strange unique snapshots of cutting-edge technology that lost a corporate arms race, now only embraced by obsessive enthusiasts. Successors of the Genesis, predecessors to the Xbox. Each with a library of masterpieces and experimental gems that are still being discovered and translated.

it's very validating to hear someone else compliment the other-worldly vibe of gamecube animal crossing. i played each entry in the series as they came out, and enjoyed them to an extent, but i was always left with a feeling that the game was missing the atmosphere that made the original so captivating to me. yeah, it's fun(?) catching all the fish and bugs and making your house, but it's not AS fun when you're bombarded by this saccharine, upbeat, overly positive vibe all the time. i don't think i've ever laughed at anything my islanders in new horizons have said to me, but the original is sarcastic and unpredictable and i love it so much. oh and the ability to ask for quests from your villagers is great and it makes no sense that they got rid of it

a video essay so good it prompted me to finally make my video essay playlist :) in all seriousness dude this goes HARD easy subscribe. and from one artist to another i love the 2d persona in a 3d (game?) environment. i dont know what it is recently about video essay creators with less than 5k subscribers utilizing the most creative means of showing their persona emoting but its kind of awesome

Literally nothing will recreate the feeling of being a child with entirely too much reign over the internet in 2011, discovering this quirky indie game called "Minecraft", and investing the next several years of your life into learning how the game works exclusively through word-of-mouth. It's something that only could've happened at the right place and right time. I felt like I was part of something special--a real-life ARG if that makes any sense. I get emotional any time I think about it.

Couldn't help but listen to the whole video. You remind me of FunkE's video style and it was nice to revisit old games I have never seen before. Mr Bone's use of like two guitar melodies creating jams was inspiring to hear. Also I felt your pain watching those Neverhood clips. The main character is so damnn slow it's unbearable, felt like an hour just watching him move at a snail's pace. It certainly makes a unique experience that way when the game conjures that feeling.

i believe that minecraft has lost it's identity, but not its direction originally, it was all alien. everything was obscure, and you needed friends to find out things. the music just emanated from the world, but it's not for you. the fog blocked you from knowing what's ahead. but now, the game needs to target the literal largest gaming audience on earth, so the game is no longer alien and janky, and the game is much more about you than the world. the game never lost it's direction either. you're the one who builds the game around you, you're the one who decides what mechanics to interact with. the world is your sandbox. the original was more like, the world is itself, and you're an intruder. but the game's direction is still your decision, but some people think its lost its direction due to the new options there are.

A series that lives rent-free in my mind is the Mia edutainment series from Kutoka Interactive. Those games could barely run on my family’s 2000s-era laptop, and when it did run properly Mia would never know how to get to where you wanted her to go, but the crusty graphics, animations, funky background tunes and intriguing voices always stuck with me to this day.

It was a really big surprise to see joshw mentioned in the Mr. Bones section. I was actually the one who made the rip that's currently up on there. (It had to be redone in a lossless format because the existing rip had the songs converted into mp3s due to the space restrictions that were in place at the time.) I didn't really know anything about ripping Saturn songs (and I still don't), so I was only able to do rerips of the redbook audio tracks. I was also really disappointed that Underwater Ride wasn't one of them. (Also, while watching, I remembered that Flower Sun and Rain was one of the games published by Victor Interactive, so it caught me completely off guard when it popped up immediately after.)

Kudos, I'm hoping to hear you again soon.

Enjoying the video! But if I can offer a bit of critique? Any time you're gushing about how cool some super jank game is, I'm having a great time. But you lead into each one by putting out a little disclaimer about how bad it is. It feels like a preemptive defense, like you're afraid someone will scorn you for finding something worthwhile in a weird game. I think just letting your joy flow uninhibited would make for a cleaner script and a better viewing experience.

I definitely feel like this had a bit of that sadly ubiquitous aversion to true sincerity, the whole post irony thing. His enjoyment of these games model had to be framed at least as slightly ironic, lest he be deemed “cringe” (which is a death sentence in this environment). We already know from the premise of the video that the games are flawed, it’s okay to enjoy them anyway. :)

Your point about coloring the sky in pure black reminds me a lot about some of Dr. Seuss's art pieces. Almost all of them have the exact same type of characters and architecture featured in his children's books; but they are more detailed and more rendered. More interestingly, his usually bright skies are completely covered in black, which gives them all sort of vibes. It's important to note that this is a conscious decision, and if he wanted a "neutral" background, he could have just as easily used white, or even dark blue representing night. But no, he made the decision of using PURE black

Your discussion of Neverhood being a claymation game just to mess with you reminded me of the game Hylics. Like the fact that Hylics has a mechanic devoted to the number of times you die and get a game over is so weird and throws traditional game design on its head.

In cases like Minecraft, I feel like the earlier days feel “better” because the original talent behind them are gone from the game. You’ll see this in other games too. People complain about a company like BioWare being worse than they used to, not realizing that many of the talents that created their earlier experiences are long gone while the illusion of it being the same company is still up. People are fooling themselves into thinking that it’s gonna be the same company when in the western game sphere, companies going under and people moving hands happens all the time. It’s the same in name only. Same deal with Minecraft, but now Notch has fuck you money and doesn’t do any development (with what he’s saying on Twitter I don’t really trust him anymore). Even with passionate devs wanting to evolve the game, it’s at the whim of Microsoft, not a guy who created a game and updated it weekly just because he felt like it.

I really like this unpolished quality in art in general, for me it feels like the creative drive imposes over technical hardships, wich is very admirable, specially in such a complex medium as videogames. For this very reason I also enjoy watching youtube videos of channels with only a handful of videos, seeing the early stages of this creative labour developing is something I find very encouraging.
