Not rare or unique…. This is what they did in the 80s and before… the suitcase release was the most common release known to most bowlers. The reason it’s not used anymore because of core shapes and cover stocks that promote high flare and a full roller or suitcase release with the thumb and fingers coming out at the exact same time is a weaker release and can cause a load of deflection or like tom Smallwood has seen sometimes is undesired landing on the thumb hole and ball bounces.

Hey, friend. Good video! I'm a starting bowler (first played 4 months ago) currently using no thumb one hand and I find that I'm very inconsistent with it and lose control with 10-pound balls. I thought that I should try thumb in for the next time I get back to the lanes, and one of my favorite player is Tom Smallwood, so I thought of becoming a full roller myself. But with this video I'm getting second thoughts. What should I do?

I found I have better ball reaction from smoother balls. Or medium level A symmetrical on higher oil patterns. But I’m a little different I have a huge rav rate and good arm speed so I technically don’t have a problem with ball reaction. I have problem with founding a ball that can be drill pin near thumb. Here’s a few that I found that good good for us. Phase 2+ 3d offset the purple one Night road this gives me the best ball reaction + Nova+ Quantum bias old ball the blue one with white dits Infinite physics. Also pearl balls with particles in the cover work also. Try to stay away from Hybrids That are more pearl then solid. Don’t let them tell you it’s a bad thing. It’s just not enough of us for them to care about make equipment that benefits us.

I used to always drill my equipment pin up and/or pin down. Pro shop guy noticed my oil rings across the thumb a little. We went with a full roller layout on next ball. A year later my average went up about ten pins. For the last 5 years now average is around 228-232 across leagues with a full roller layout. Just find what works for you. I play down and in across every house I come across.

One year I bought the Hammer Obsession and couldn't control it at all. When I moved on the approach my release changed. I was able to control it and my track changed. Average went from 195 to 205. Not sure what happened but I went back to what I knew and average is back to 192. This is frustrating. I am thinking enough with this sport. I don't have the right mechanics.

Tom is not a full roller. He cocks or breaks his elbow to allow for the deep cupping of the ball but he definitely comes straight through the release from behind the ball with a slight angle. For his spare ball he locks out his elbow and wrist to cut the break and throw harder. I do the same thing for my spares.

So I have determined that my wife is a right handed full roller based on your videos and description. Her release is inconsistent as there is lots backspin, a lot of forward end over end rotation, or it actually hooks like it supposed to. We adjusted her layout from traditional pin up to the F. R. pin down layout but it still doesn't seem to have a noticeable backend motion. I try to coach her but I'm a conventional left-handed bowler and I simply don't know what drills to show her as I don't (obviously) understand the F. R. release. Is the any coaching video you can do as they don't seem to exist

without looking at how your wife plays it's hard to nail down what exactly is happening with her ball roll but i'm guessing they're likely related to either timing or wrist turn causing inconsistencies in the release and resultant ball roll. the first thing that probably can be done to help her release the ball more consistently would be to practice foul line drills throwing the ball straight. doing this can also make it easier to identify where the inconsistency is coming from, whether the ball is leaving her hand too early or too late because of uncertainty regarding correct release timing, or if that is because of the wrist turning inconsistently at the point of release causing the ball to fall off or hang onto the hand during release. while wrist and arm strength isn't a definitive factor, doing this can also help her get used to the weight of the ball in every phase of the armswing without having to think about footwork, while building up sufficient arm strength to execute and replicate the motions consistently. from there on once the release can be fairly consistently replicated it will be easier to more definitively determine what kind of ball roll your wife produces, whether it's conventional or full roller. then add more steps back into the footwork to see if those issues reappear, and then work on the timing at each step those issues show up. the training methods for conventional and full roller bowlers, and even lefties and righties, are actually basically the same, just that the ball rolls that result are different, as for most full rollers the release is natural to them. the same principles apply for training both full rollers and conventional bowlers, the only difference being how the ball rolls off the hand. so no need to be afraid of coaching your wife just because she plays in a different way from you, as long as you're sharing with her the correct fundamental knowledge and skills, most of which can be quite easily found online

The ball i was using at that time was a Danger Zone which Tracked on the left of the thumb and.finger holes? i'm guessing your're referring to norm duke but nope, norm duke doesn't throw full roller. he normally doesn't use rubber inserts for his finger holes so it's harder to tell but he throws conventional, just with little to no axis tilt so his oil tracks run quite close to his grip holes but never cut across them. yes cores and coverstocks do have some impact on how the ball rolls down the lane, though it normally doesn't affect the general roll direction. when i threw conventionally drilled modern reactive balls my oil tracks cut straight through my thumb hole, but when i did the exact same thing using my also conventionally drilled plastic core-less spare ball (when i still used one) it tracked 100% full roller. that was what finally convinced by regular pro shop boss to drill me a full roller layout

You might not be able to play 7th arrow with a full roller but unless you are a touring pro who cares? A couple of years ago I bowled in a league with a full roller who shot 300 in back to back weeks and his ball hit like a truck. ahh backup! that's probably even more unorthodox than my full roller game. i dabbled a little with it before when i first picked up the sport, as i unwittingly threw slight backup balls at 10-pins by keeping my wrist too unnaturally straight. but yes i've seen backup bowlers with more tricks up their sleeve than me as a full roller will ever have, playing with leverage, wrist position, wrist turn and all. but hey, if it works, it works! anthony simonsen won titles throwing backup! it's easier to throw backup two-handed, but amazing nonetheless. i've been in the sport 18 years myself, most of the time during which the coaches i came across had no idea what was going on with my ball roll beyond it being weird as hell and my release being wrong. all that while making my school and college teams, and then later on a couple of league teams. so i guess my wrong release is pretty right for me!

The reasons the full roller has a limited amount of drilling patterns is because there is not many places to put the pin that doesn’t cause the flare (oil rings) to cross the finger/thumb holes. A ball that is bouncing down the lane tends not to change directions in a consistent manner. Back when full rollers were more common, bowling balls didn’t flare, so as long as the first oil ring didn’t cross the finger holes the ball was good all the way down the lane.

@mikewhite735
@mikewhite735 3 жыл бұрын
First off, I used to own a pro shop, and have been (IBPSIA) trained on fitting and drilling. I’ve been bowling since approximately 1970. Back then the full roller was common for good bowlers, mainly due to what they were trying to achieve. The consensus was that accuracy was most important. Anything that caused the ball to change direction hindered accuracy and was considered a bad technique. Once Mark Roth came along, some people decided to jump on the entry angle wagon. I constantly heard “you can never be consistent crossing that many boards” Once I figured out how to release the ball such that it didn’t cause inaccuracy while maintaining a large change of direction (even by today’s standards) I didn’t hear the same comments because I collected so many side pots and out averaged the “straighties” A good full roller back in the day kept their fingers at or below the “equator”, and the thumb well in front of the fingers. The result was the ball had zero axis tilt, and very little axis rotation. In your case, it looks like you have a weak wrist and the ball is just dangling off you hand at release. That puts your fingers approximately 30-45 degrees above the “equator” when your thumb comes out. Due to modern bowling balls, and house oil patterns that can be somewhat effective if you match up the surface prep with the oil pattern. But if your matchup is off, it’s gonna be ugly.
@fookerbowls9050
@fookerbowls9050 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the insight into the transition between the full roller and 'modern' power eras! These are the kind of things only those who have lived through the period will know. Deeply appreciate the stories from those times! You're pretty much spot on regarding my wrist, though i did train my wrist pretty hard earlier on in my bowling life to no avail, because as far as i remember my ball roll has always been 'weird' or 'ugly' to my peers who had no idea what was happening (heck, at that time i didn't know either!), so it might not have been entirely a matter of wrist strength in my case. Spot on in terms of matchup, too! i've had days on lanes that matched up so beautifully i was giving national team-calibre bowlers a run for their money without moving more than 4 boards the entire time, but on other days no matter what ball and line i tried the best i could get was 9, with multiple pocket 7-10s thrown in for good measure. it's a bit less rough now throwing only full roller layouts, the variance between good and bad matchups closing a little bit, but the frustration of absolutely nothing really working remains very real!
@mikewhite735

@@fookerbowls9050 With a release like yours, my suggestion is, rather than drill up multiple balls with different drill patterns, stick to the standard full roller drill pattern and then make the surface prep the difference between each ball.
