Years ago I read a bowling book, I think it was Mike Aulby's and I remember the line, "full roller release is a dinosaur." Bowling is full of various misconceptions and people doing things because that's the way it's done. I don't think the pins know if it's a full roller release or not.
@fookerbowls90503 жыл бұрын
in a sense aulby isn't wrong! because if you watch my second video, i myself mention that the full roller in bowling does limit what a bowler can do on the lanes. and given the way the game has developed over the years, it can be a bit of a curse, though as smalls has proven, it is possible to make it work!

i think the reason mo says he isn't a 'true' full-roller is because he uses an off-set half thumb, meaning his layouts are not 'entirely' full-roller. though it is also true that he rolls in between fingers and thumb holes. the most accurate way to see if one is a full-roller is by looking at the ball tracks of their spare balls, as there are typically no mass biases and the release is as flat as possible. the tracks on my old spare ball are what convinced my ball driller to do full roller layouts for me.
@Flightoz3 жыл бұрын
@@fookerbowls9050 the only reason the track goes in between the finger and thumb for Smallwood is because of the offset thumb. If his thumb hole was normal the track wouldn't. Definition of a full roller is zero degrees of title which Smallwood doesn't have. He has the same tilt as a normal release

old habits do die hard. i suffered heavily adding a bit more power to my game a good 7 years into the sport, as it took me dumping everything that was already deeply ingrained into my muscle memory. was worth the pain, though as i went from forcing a ball to hook by elbowing the nuts off it while going extremely slow to getting the same or more revs and far more speed with a lot less muscling after about 4 months of banging on the wall. balance comes mostly from footwork and timing to keep our centre of gravity constant. slowly work on feeling how your body is moving at every stage of the approach and you'll get a good idea what you need to do! subtle weight and mass bias differences can make the ball feel slightly different despite identical layouts and grips, which may subtly affect wrist position at release point. i've had teammates who threw two balls entirely differently despite their grips and layouts being entirely the same, to the befuddlement of even our coach at the time! well done in the clutch! which is something i need to work on myself. my mental strength in crunch time has been failing me more often in recent years!

@fookerbowls90503 жыл бұрын
@@joehoenig7596 yes shannon pluhowsky is a bit of an anomaly. the standard definition of a full roller is that the ball rolls in between the grip holes, covering the entire circumference of the ball, and there is zero axis tilt. the debate among many in the community is whether a bowler has to meet either or all of the criteria to count as a full roller. this applies to tom smallwood, too. randy calls him a full roller, mo pinel doesn't, i call him a full roller, many comments on my videos say he's not. i'd have to take a far closer look at shannon's game than is possible now to properly define her game, but i'm guessing she also happens to meet only one of those criteria, which leaves it open for individual interpretation as to whether her game is full roller or not

Not rare or unique…. This is what they did in the 80s and before… the suitcase release was the most common release known to most bowlers. The reason it’s not used anymore because of core shapes and cover stocks that promote high flare and a full roller or suitcase release with the thumb and fingers coming out at the exact same time is a weaker release and can cause a load of deflection or like tom Smallwood has seen sometimes is undesired landing on the thumb hole and ball bounces.

i'm guessing your're referring to norm duke but nope, norm duke doesn't throw full roller. he normally doesn't use rubber inserts for his finger holes so it's harder to tell but he throws conventional, just with little to no axis tilt so his oil tracks run quite close to his grip holes but never cut across them. yes cores and coverstocks do have some impact on how the ball rolls down the lane, though it normally doesn't affect the general roll direction. when i threw conventionally drilled modern reactive balls my oil tracks cut straight through my thumb hole, but when i did the exact same thing using my also conventionally drilled plastic core-less spare ball (when i still used one) it tracked 100% full roller. that was what finally convinced by regular pro shop boss to drill me a full roller layout

Despite having a 205 average in leagues and bowling my whole life I've always had issues with the release. Instead of my thumb coming out first and getting the lift with my middle and ring finger I tend to over turn the ball and all 3 fingers come out at almost the exact same time. However.. I saw a video of me bowling in slow motion and a friend was like "you're over turning the ball" and at first I didn't know what he meant. I've always bowled like that and have always been a good bowler despite bowling like that. But because of him making me feel like I'm not bowling properly I've been trying to release the ball properly and it's only been causing my scores to drop. It's at the point where I'm now starting to transition into a 2handed bowler. Is there a such thing as a 2 handed bowler that is STILL considered a Full Roller? I feel like the only way a person can be a "full roller" is if they use their thumb. Am I right that if the thumb is removed it's almost impossible to have the tracks go between the fingers/thumb holes?
@fookerbowls90503 жыл бұрын
yeah i've had problems getting the ball off my hand most of my bowling "career" (since i've never actually done it for a living). even now i basically mangle my thumb every time i bowl, especially after i go on hiatus for extended periods of time. it's possible to score well while having habits others would consider undesirable, which was basically me in the local version of high school, as i had the slowest ball speed and a pretty whack ball roll but one of the higher averages in my mens' team at the time. it's also possible to hit a wall when trying to change those habits, as i had experienced when modifying my footwork and timing. even changing ball weight can bring about some wall-hitting, especially if the change is upwards. i lost a good 30 pins in average while i was training those things, then when i finally had them down in my muscle memory i bounced a good 20 pins above where i was before i started training those things. one way to work on overturning is to pay attention to how your palm is facing in your follow through. usually if you can see your palm with your thumb pointing at the ceiling you haven't overturned. that said, there are bowlers who have made careers out of overturning at release, so it really depends on what works. also advice from friends isn't always entirely accurate, as we can't always be sure what their opinions are based on, which may be well-meaning but ultimately misguided if their opinions aren't fully based on in-depth knowledge of the game and/or aren't applicable to others due to characteristics in play style that is unique to each individual. like if someone tells me i have to stick my balance arm out in front of me when i make my approach because a lot of pba pros do that and it looks cool i'd politely ask them to get lost because doing that turns my waist and throws my armswing out of whack, meaning my shots fly all over the place. as to whether a two-hander can be a full roller, i've had viewers of my other videos say they are full-rolling two-handers, so i guess it is still possible to full roll without using the thumb. when i throw basketballs underhand i get the full-roller, erm, roll, too. though i can also reveal that this is one thing i'll be finding out in a new video i'm currently making, so do stay tuned to see what happens!

It would be very difficult to be a full roller with today's bowling balls and their weight block setup.

Tom Smallwood is a full roller......not difficult at all.

I use the 2 handed style I’ve just started it but I’ve been very successful with it hitting 100 and above in only 13 but I’ve been using multiple balls to see what is better I’ve used a 70 dollar ball but now I’m going to try one of the higher ones

instead of looking at equipment i would advise that you concentrate on honing your physical game first! learn how to make one ball work for you, figure out what it can or can't do, and then build up your arsenal based on what you've learned from that ball. when you learn how to make one ball work for you, you can tame basically any ball to your bidding, and that comes from nailing down the fundamentals first!

@@fookerbowls9050 I’ve learned all the fundamentals I just need to find s ball that curves better I started with a house ball it barely curved then the one I’m using now it curves more I just need to find a ball more suited for curving but thank you fir the tips

@@shopragracing6883 try any storm products, not sure if you did or not since your comment was 4 months ago but if you want a good ball with good cores inside them then storm bowling balls are the best, even if they are over 200$ try saving up and you’ll be able to get it, also most storm balls have scents too so that’s a bonus lol but yeah instead of wasting money into other technical balls that your most likely never going to use again since you want something that can hook your ball even more, I suggest storm but if you wanna pay for something that’s still really good but for less money, I suggest you try Roto Grip they have good bowling balls too, I’m a storm guy tho storm is my ride or die so that’s why I suggested that brand first haha, anyways hope this helped if your still looking!

If you want to throw this candyass way do it in non competition, it should be banned from competition, it is a slap in the face to bowlers of the past and disrespectful to them who came up through the ranks the right way!!
@fookerbowls90503 жыл бұрын
i'd actually think you should be happy to see more full rollers in the sport! because if you're thinking this is a cheat code that's making the sport unfair to everyone else, i'd have to say you're sadly mistaken, as the only people disadvantaged by throwing full roller are full rollers ourselves. it's more a handicap than a cheat code in the modern game, really! and not in the way where we get extra pins added to our scores.
@NakedDave1003 жыл бұрын
@@fookerbowls9050 you have your opinion, I have mine, to me it is a disgrace, if you can't bowl normal, or bowling two handed to be different, either way, in competition bowling one handed should be the only way allowed in the USA, if it is the Aussies who brought this shit here , they need to compete in their own country, and leave the USA alone, if US bowlers want to compete in Australia, then they need to adapt to there garbage!! I'll never think this right or accept it!!! And the American Bowling Congress and PBA are cowards for not enforcing this!!!
