Loved the review. I've seen a few other retrospectives of the SR series and none of them go into as much detail about the narrative as you do, critiquing the finer points of the story and the characters. Very good stuff. My only quibble is, what do you have against definitive articles? They're called THE Boss and THE General. They're THE only ones.
@lunarnocturne
@lunarnocturne 13 сағат бұрын
Thank you! That was always my goal when making these retrospectives. I like diving deeper into the meat and potatoes of a game's story with my scripts. As for the definitive articles, it wasn't for a lack of trying. The reason why I eliminated nearly every single one for the Boss and the General was because saying the articles messed with my flow when recording, and I felt like it would throw off certain sentences. Thanks for the feedback!

One thing I always liked about the boss is that He/she did surpassed Julius in terms of leadership , not only did the boss wipe out the rival gangs but also fought a million dollars cooperation backed up the military . Unlike Julius , Whenever a saint member dies , the boss makes sure to make the rival gang pay in a personal way , keep in mind , Julius sad that in SR1 that Lin’s death and Johnny’s injury were just part of the war and he didn’t seem that sad about Lin’s death in my opinion , I do wish we could’ve gotten a cutscene of the main saints at Carlos funeral . Another thing I’ve noticed is that the boss while yes is a psychopath like Johnny if not worst , has shown mercy to at least two rival gang members , the gang members that I’m referring to are Matt and Donnie , for Donnie , I believe that the Boss deep down knew that Donnie didn’t have nothing to do with what happened to Lin , so he only threatens to kill him but he never does , and maybe I’m going to much into it , but the boss definitely didn’t blame Donnie for what happened to Lin , when it comes to Matt , I do think the boss did go to far by burning Matt’s hand ✋ , ofc just like Johnny , he/she seems to take pleasure from seeing his/she enemy’s suffer . But Matt wasn’t a direct gang member unlike Donnie . When it comes to Julie’s betrayal of our character, while yes the Boss is a psychopath and is way worse then Johnny , Julie’s didn’t know what the Boss would’ve done if he had simply ask him to stop . If Julie’s had simply asked him to stop , he would’ve listened, the boss would’ve never attacked Julie’s because Julie’s at the time of SR1 was his mentor and a father figure to him and Johnny , while Johnny wasn’t going to stop , that doesn’t mean the player wouldn’t had Julie’s handled the situation in a better way . Great video .

Accidentally unlocked all the damage upgrades before I finished the deckers storyline, so I was immune to pretty much all damage(except mele) for the last third of the story. It was fun being invincible at first, but it got kinda boring playing through all those missions while invincible. The challenge was gone, and I was pretty much just there for the cutscenes. It's a shame because the game doesn't allow you to turn off the upgrades, leaving me stuck like that unless I started new save which wasn't ideal for someone who already completed so much of the map takeover. After that, the zombie mission was the only one that actually challenged me, since the enemies there targeted my only weakness.

At first, it's fun being able to steamroll enemies without much getting in your way, but after some time, it starts to get boring and makes you wanna switch to another game completely. That's why I don't like that the game doesn't allow you to switch off certain upgrades; once they're on, they're set in stone.

It's funny. You hate how Kinzi is portrayed while I hate how Oleg is portrayed. I got into football, weightlifting, and the military during and after high school, without glazing myself too much, I'm a big guy and a smart guy. I hate how intelligent people play chess and use words like "exquisite" instead of "great" or "good." Most intelligent people tend to dumb down our words because explaining our statements becomes annoying, fast. We also dont just "intelligent" at people of equal intelligence. My bro is probably smarter than me, and we dont just relate by talking about applied physics. Our friend, an actual genius, doesn't talk about coding. He talks about games and other shit. Oleg's intelligence is just as tired as a stereotype tbh.

OMG, I LOVED Duel Masters Cobalt growing up! You were right about the non-monster animations being kinda wonky, but I still enjoyed the game overall and wish they made a sequel to it with more of the TCG cards and updated 2D animation. IMO, Luc was the only main character with a good story. It focused on him building his rank up from the start, the antagonist from start to finish was the Light antagonist Sera, whom got him disqualified and whom Luc defeated, took her role as leader of the Power Plant, and humiliated in front of the Light Guardian Illium. Rusty and Tre shared Marcus as their main antagonist in their respective stories, while Caitlin and Earl (their respective rivals) only had minor roles. Rebecca had Jalen (her Water rival) in her story, but Sera was always with him and both were overshadowed by Widow who held no real weight to Rebecca's story. Flynn and Marcus hardly even interacted all that much in Flynn's story, as Flynn was all over the place with Source. Not only were the story animations wonky, but so were the respective storylines. Regardless, I still loved the game, I just wish they did as good a job with the other 4's stories as they did Luc's... But I'm just rambling... 😅 I actually got back into watching the walkthrough of the game and now I've even began collecting the TCG cards and building mono decks IRL! I never got to invest in and play the game as much back when it was here in the US, but now, I can at least buy and collect the cards and build the decks! Hopefully, I can find some of those decidated fans/duelists out there to play with in the future, but for now, just getting the cards themselves after all these years feel great! ✨✨✨

This game has the potential for a good sequel! Sucks so much that they never made any kind of follow-up to it. Luc's story was also my favorite. I love that style of story where he's worked his way to the top, but lost everything through no fault of his own, and must prove and fight his way back to where he was at. The aftermath of the battle with Sera felt so good to watch. Marcus was also a fun antagonist because of how cocky and in-your-face he was. His interactions with Tre are always a treat and give me flashbacks to the rivalry between Ash and Gary in the original Pokemon anime. Caitlin had potential to be a fun antagonist just based off how little we see of her, but I guess they couldn't find a good way to make her a main antagonist. When it came to Widow being directly related to Rebecca, the lack of any kind of huge dilemma on Rebecca's part really took the wind out of what could've been some good character-building and interactions between the two. As for Flynn and Source... Flynn was just doing his dirty work because... reasons! Getting my hands on what was released in the U.S is one goal of mine. The artwork and lore is so amazing and I'd love to run battles against myself with cards that were released outside of the video game itself.
@StarWolfDragon
@StarWolfDragon Ай бұрын
@@lunarnocturne Right?! I hate that there was no sequel or follow-up to it. I wanted to play cards like "Fighter Dual Fang", "Armored Blaster Valdios" and "Ballom, Master of Death" in that game SO bad! TwT Right? Same! I also loved it when Illium just yeeted her and Widow from the Light Civilization when they tried to accuse Luc of cheating again. That was SO cathartic considering what a jerk she was throughout Luc's story. And agreed, I loved Marcus as an antagonist too, I just wished he was used in Flynn's story as much as he was in Rusty's and Tre's. He could've been the perfect foil to Flynn's stoic nature. I also loved Marcus' interactions with Tre too, but tbh, I'd have loved it even better if it was Earl in Marcus' place there instead, because not only would it have had the two Nature rivals pitted against each other, but you'd also have a farmboy with a Southern accent (and a fan club no less) talking the same kind of smack towards the underdog Tre. Tre could've worked his way up from the bottom the same way Luc did, then steal all of Earl's fans the way Source had Flynn do, earning a second and final shot at Earl who would've had the remaining pieces at the time. And speaking of Ash and Gary, you just came up with the perfect dynamic for Rusty and Caitlin! She could've been the Gary to Rusty's Ash! Rusty does remind me a lot of Ash! They could've competed over who'd get the most pieces first before their final duel over who gets them all. Rusty would've earned Caitlin's respect the same way Ash did to Gary with the two of them being possible frenemies. And agreed regarding Rebecca. They could've stretched the familial ties further and had Jalen and Sera as Widow's kids, making their playful teasing towards Rebecca and Jalen's disgust towards her in the beginning more understanding, with Widow pitting Jalen and Rebecca against each other, playing favorites, adding that huge dilemma for Rebecca's character and story, and adding more character building and interactions between the three. And yeah about Source... But he could've had everyone do his dirty work for him where it benefitted each of them, like Tre handling Earl's Fan Club (as I mentioned above) or Rusty provoking Caitlin in the Tournament Hall... X3 OMG, SAME!!! That's why I'm getting them and not those Kaijudo cards. Both the art AND the Duel Masters card frame are amazing AND nostalgic! And I intend to do the same with running battles against myself using all of my favorite cards once I get all of them. I do the same with my Future Card Buddyfight decks! It's great to know I'm not the only one who does that! X'3

This is arguably my favorite video that I worked on. At the time I made it, I hardly saw any deep-dives/retrospectives covering Saints Row 1 the way I did. When it comes to my character, I like to dress in more "ordinary" street clothes, but I appreciate Volition for leaving the door open by leaving players tons of customization options. The guy who gave Lin that lighter was probably a clone model. I could see a team of animators and coders not wanting to create a new model for certain scenes, especially with the shoestring budget Volition had at the time.

Leaving another comment because I wanna help a homies algorithm I wanna point out the interesting parallels of each of the big new members of the Saints to old members they replace and enemies from the last game. First is Shaundi, her plotline is a slightly more comedic version of Lin's where she has a relationship with a member of a rival gang (Lin had DOnnie, Shaundi had Veteran Child), however she also has a lot more in common with Tanya from the Vice Kings in that she has a lot of "relations" going around to be kind about it. Though unlike both she is much more carefree but also loyal. Next is Carlos, who has a lot of similarities, at least in terms of being ready to handle their responsibilities, to Angelo of Los Camales, in over his head and as such pays the price for being too far in where he doesn't belong. Now he also is in my mind a prototype of a character from a game that people call a GTA clone but is more an SR Clone Sleeping Dogs in Jackie Ma. Unlike Jackie he doesn't get enough screen time for it to land like finding poor Jackie at the end of that game. Last is Pierce, and who does Pierce resemble with all his smart plans and shit? Dex from the old Third Street Saints. He is a genius and knows good plans but he is ignored and I feel its a subconscious reason: Dex lead them through all their smart plans that worked but... Dex was also a traitor to the saints, having betrayed them to work for a big corporation that controls everything. Whether they know it or not, their dislike of Pierce's plans is subconsciously because he is a lot like Dex but isn't Dex. So in turn he is shrugged off as a joke. Just my analysis watching this for a third time in the last week.

All I can say is while Saints Row 2 was debatable on it, Saints Row 3 proved Julius right. The Boss and the saints are nothing but trouble. But the game also feels like a Marvel movie version of a sandbox game. Like seriously, there is too much goofy shit for me that contrasted from Saints Row 2. But at this point, the series felt like it was going to get popular but... At what cost to the series integrity?
@lunarnocturne
@lunarnocturne Ай бұрын
The Saints in the second game... yeah they started proving Julius' point about distorting the original goal of being a somewhat vigilante-style street gang setting out to clear Stilwater of all gang activity. That's also a very interesting way to describe this game, "Marvel movie version of a sandbox game." The complete shift in tone upset quite a lot of people, especially given that the first two games were established as a street-style sandbox games. I get that THQ wanted more out of this series, and the video game industry is a business at the end of the day, but this change was very unwelcome lol.
