Man, that TW010 is so resistant, it barely wants to produce any sound. Must push it like an old car. Something in that’s setup must be changed.

Both horns sound great. The Yani seems to sound quieter in the low end of the saxophone. I have hear that, as you mention the ergonomics seem to fit really well. Your test room seems to echo or reflect sound which is probably good to compare horns, but i would have liked a bit of sound damping to reduce the echo. Both are pro horns, but I like Keilwerth SX90R since I own one, and it has been very reliable. Well played.

I purchased a new Mark VI alto in 1975. I could make it sound beautiful with warm sounding mouthpieces (it was a little on the bright side). I switched to a Yamaha 62 alto a decade later which I liked more than the Mark VI... the intonation was so much better and the sound was beautiful the whole range. I switched to the Yamaha 855 alto in 1995. The 855 alto had super easy low notes (compared to the 875 alto) and I loved the sound even more than the 62 alto. A few years ago I switched to the 875 EXII alto and I love this alto the most. I still love the sound of my Yamaha 875 tenor I purchased in 1995.... especially with the new Yamaha necks... E1 and V1. I now realize I should have kept that Mark VI alto... I didn't realize back then, how you can improve a sax tremendously with a different neck. I recommend the 875 Yamaha models over the 82z models because you can get plenty of brightness out of the 875 with a bright mouthpiece and you can get very warm lush sounds with warm sounding mouthpieces. The 82z models are more on the bright side... Yamaha purposely made them to play brighter with less resistance... many saxophonists love that brightness... but, I can get plenty bright on the 875 with the right mouthpiece.

One cam immediately hear the difference the rounded tone holes make. Easier to control dynamics, lush subtone, completely 3D feel to the sound.

I bought a Selmer Mark 6 Tenor around 1977. I’ve been playing with different bands from the 60’s - 90’s. I really loved the sounds of the Selmer and I liked the sound quality of the Alto Selmer you were playing.

Free blowing isn’t everything. If you want free blowing, change the mouthpiece, reed or neck. In terms of sound, the Yanagisawa has load of character. The Yamaha sounds sterile in comparison. Personal opinion of course… I don’t think Coltrane would opt for Yamaha - a company which also makes sporting goods.

Did anybody have experience using this amp for electronic drums? Would be interesting to know

Never tried that but it would probably work well as this amp has a powerful and clear sound across all frequencies.

Nice work Mike, I have both the 98H and have just borrowed a VE22 and you've now got me working out how I can enhance my trumpet parts in my band. I'm the sum total of the horn section so this is going to be a game changer !

1973 Selmer is still making amazing sounds. Yamaha 82z’s tone is very pleasing with silky intonation.

I’d say the mouthpiece wasn’t appropriate for the Yanagisawa. Any saxophone can be made to sound dull. It’s not necessarily a reflection of the saxophone.

Nice , like the 62. Just bought the entry level yts 280 and a Conn ladyface, didnt play for 20 years and am going back on track... You think a silver plated 62 would sound a bit different cause of the silver body or os it just the colour? Greetings
@MikeBlock5 ай бұрын
It’s hard to say on the playing or lacquer. Some say plated horns sound brighter! Silver can be a hassle to keep polished unless you like the tarnished patina look.

Yamaha is far too bright. It sounds solid as far as the action. Very smooth. I’m biased as I play a 1973 VI my self, but the horn here has a much darker tone than the Yamaha and looks to feel better in the upper ranges.

I’d suggest long tone exercises with a tuner. Check out the Tonal Energy Tuner app. Great features on there that will help you with this.

The plating does absolutely nothing. They sounded almost identical but I preferred the later one it was slightly brighter and more versatile in my mind. I’ve actually played that Silver plated Mark VI and I did not like it at all when in comparison to a late mark Vi I ended up purchasing from PM over that 5 digit.

Small world! I’m super happy with my Keilwerth Shadow and would have to trade it in to afford a new horn. Your Yani plays wonderfully though and the unlacquered adds a nice touch. It’s going to look amazing once it develops a patina. I’m sure you will find a buyer! Please feel free to share this video if it helps to sell the horn.!
