I think this is one of the best albums ever made by anyone. It's fitting that it should be part of the canon of Joe Jackson. He has made so many masterful albums. I was living in Germany when this album and tour were released. I was extremely lucky to score tickets to the show in a small cathedral in Bruges Belgium. I've seen Joe several times, but I can't decide whether that night was my favorite, or when I saw him in 1989 at Red Rocks, Morrison Colorado. Props to all the fine musicians in this live session.

Jackson mastered so many genres. Started as a punk rocker. Amazing.

I just copied these lyrics in from a site: Down there in the ashes There's gold and silver too Dear sister, I try to share with you Smug, you said Take your spoils away And you broke the bridge on your side [Verse 2] You wither my troubles And all I dream to do With half-smiles until I scream at you Mad, you said That's how you repay But you broke the bridge on your side [Bridge] And where am I As I swallow your tears And the prince with the slipper appears Do you hack at your heel? Do I try not to feel? [Verse 3] I fail with my anger And with my sympathy I tremble-so little left for me Harsh, you said Now you walk away But I left the gold for you to find When you broke the bridge on your side

just AMAZING to see Dawn Upshaw sing live for this... truly one of the world's great sopranos today. I saw this show at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, MA in I think 1997. She wasn't there (nor Nadja or Suzanne Vega or the other stars), but the musicians and singers he had were just fabulous. Remains my favorite album. (Joe Jackson's a musician's musician.)

Pretty much says it all about the state of America today. Amazingly prescient song from 1991. LOVE this band, always have, thanks for uploading! There is a remix of this out there by J. G. Thirlwell (Foetus). Rocks, but it's a radio edit and says "FAKE you over". So 80s, before the FCC quit fining radio stations for "passing profanity", which this is.
