You can see some cuts here: www.eevblog.com/forum/projects/diy-mostly-printed-desktop-wire-edm-machine/msg5534073/#msg5534073 30mm mild steel was the biggest cut made yet. HSS and stainless works too. Some images are posted in the community section here too.

For some reason I forgot to put C28 and C22 on the board. Both are 100pf 50v 0805 ceramics, Make sure to put them there. Also skipped C27 (0.1uf 50v) They are drawn in the images, I'm just really bad at multitasking. Hard to keep track about everything while recording. R40, R43, C30, C17 are not used.

@G-EDM

@@9782ravi The board has a footprint for a flash capacitor and can be used with a resistor based PSU too. But the DPM solution provides much more control. And as bonus the code is able to change voltage and current on the fly for probing etc. After I started to work with it it worked too good to change anything.

@@gerritvisser It is almost impossible to break the wire now at reasonable settings. If it runs into a true short the protection logic will react fast and you can set the microseconds allowed for short circuits. Once some people buy stuff I call it pay-off time. Everything else is fun and trouble.
@gerritvisser

Do you want it done fast or do you want it done right is always a decision :-) The belt walking is likely due to shafts not being totally parallel to each other, the washer is a good solution at these speeds.
@G-EDM
@G-EDM Ай бұрын
Took three hours but will last a lifetime. You're right on that, but three hours is too much. The printed belt has some blobs and the guide bearings are on the outer edge. I increased the tension before the cut and the belt walked a little over the bearing edge creating side drift. Will design a printed idler housing for the bearings. The washer solution is just temporary.

0.6-1.2A if I remember correct. Cutting the 30mm block is not easy and it took hours. Maybe there are some ways to improve the software a little but at 60v and with bad flushing there are limits.

Thanks. Is not easy to write the control logic but there will be a new video soon. Seems the magic is to not try to prevent shorts but to let it short controlled without dropping the voltage. The average Amps in the video cut was 0.3A. Currently burning at constant 0.6A and allow short circuits up to 2A for a given number of microseconds without dropping the voltage. Short circuit with a voltage drop seem to be the root issue I had. Fixed it now. Don't fight the shorts, fight the forward motion.

@@G-EDM I am not an expert in electronics, but yes, the control of the power that the wire can support without burning that is the difficult thing to achieve, it is something that not everyone understands, the ‘easy’ is to build a generator that gives many amps.
@G-EDM
@G-EDM 2 ай бұрын
@@tessenCNC Lucky I did not have to go that deep into electronics. Current control is done with the DPM buck converter that works well. It can be set to a current that the wire can take and for a given time range the wire can also take a much higher current. Problem with the DPM is only that once a short circuit happens the voltage drops and that drop makes a short circuit worse. Just figured that out today and will add some new logic to the code.

Currently it is too stable with a tiny too much forward pull. At the settings that produce this stable burn the wire will get stuck at some point. At 60v the kerf width is just too tiny. But this is something that will be fixed soon. No big deal. Good news is that the wire does not break. Protection logic will go into pause if something is wrong.
