This is wild. I got a batch of old VHS tapes from the bass player of Heirborne to put on KZbin, and Outlaw was one of the bands on one of the tapes. I just went ahead and put it up. I went into Marines about 6 months prior to this show, so I missed a lot of these local shows, and this is the first time seeing my buddies in Heirborne play some of their first shows. A lot of these bands just came and went. I have no idea who Outlaw was aside from a pretty decent cover band...whoever this guitarist is, he can pull off some riffs from guitar icons pretty decently, and not in a shitty hamfisted way! Glad you liked!

I shot it myself on a rented camcorder. I was shipping off to Marine Corps boot camp in a few days so I figured this would a good time to get some footage of the band. Good thing I did, because only a couple songs here ended up on the "Morbid Reality" demo. Also, Russ King was no longer in a band shortly after this, so they were a 4 piece a few months later. After their demo, they hooked up with Shayne Scholl on guitar did some stuff that didn't get recorded. The band broke up and Nyk, Shane, and Shayne started Possession, which led to a few releases, then Nyk and Shane went on with Frost Like Ashes. I labelled the VHS tape "Heirborne Beginnings", but this is certainly the seeds of Frost Like Ashes.

@megiloth36347 ай бұрын
This was all shot with a Hitachi 2400 VHS camcorder bought in Jan 1992. Decent enough quality. I knew people with camcorders from the 80's and their videos were all jumpy and staticky, with terrible sound. If you check out some of the live shows I shot in 1992, the sound quality is pretty darn good! These 9th Comm Bn VHS tapes have sitting in my basement for almost 30 years and they came out pretty good amazingly.

49:33-50:20 - reminiscing through Mainside. Those were the days. Also at 49:46 , I remember gas prices went UP to $1.23/$1.29/$1.38 . What we wouldn't give for prices like that these days
@megiloth36347 ай бұрын
And those were California prices, while the rest of the country was probably around $1 per gallon. Didn't notice it before but while driving by, I looked at what was playing at the base theater...Memoirs of an Invisible Man, what a terrible movie! Chevy Chase should have did Caddyshack and stopped at Fletch! Out of curiosity, I checked Google Maps to see if I could find, based on the drive on Vandergrift Rd going by the MCAS, where my friend was moving into. There's a quick clip of me panning around and I catch street signs Hamilton and Hawkins. This was in 1992, so I figure they may have changed the name or something, but no. I found it, no street view obviously. Still named Hamilton St. and Hawkins St. according to Google Maps. At the end of the video we look out the back window and it's just a field, now it's a Day Care Center. I zoom out Google Maps and notice that right down the road from Stuart Mesa Base Housing is...Edson Range, where us Hollywood Marines did our 2nd Phase training at Boot Camp! Fond memories of arms and legs going to sleep in the snap-in circles. Shooting Pizza Box for rifle qualification ( I wrecked it on 300 rapid fire ), and way out beyond the range, I found the Gas Chamber, which they now call the Confidence Chamber.

@megiloth36347 ай бұрын
Looking at Google Maps, Bldg 13109 is now part of Separations? I got out in July 1993 and Separations was waaaay down by Vandergrift and the road that leads to the golf course. Google Maps now shows it as what looks to be a square pavement with a few electrical poles or something. I guess they moved Separations up to civilization. Also that road just on the other side of where the promotion thing was, that used to run all the way to that street where the Motor Pool is, and that diagonal building used to be the 13 Area Guard Shack, where I did many many stints. I have another video from when I was on guard duty. I gotta know, do they still do the Blood Stripe, or is that completely off-limits? I would hope that is still unofficially happens. It was still a no-no in 1992, but nobody cared. It was one of those things you didn't do around the Company office, and waited until you were well out of sight of pu$$y little officers who would probably tattle like a little b1tch. I couldn't walk for a couple days.

I was already a metalhead, but 1991 and 1992 is when I discovered Death Metal. The only thing I know about "Black Metal" at that time was it was a Venom record 😀. It wasn't until I got out of the Marines in Summer 1993 that I discovered Black Metal (Emperor, Burzum, Mayhem, Enslaved, etc).

@megiloth3634 Those are some of my favorites. I also relate to the barracks life (I was AF 2003-2009), and this is pretty similar. Only difference was my neighbors hated the constant metal being played (they were into rap).

@@b.entranceperium Same thing when I was in Okinawa. Guys in the room below us in the barracks were into hip-hop stuff. After a few hours of thump thump thump, we decided to place the Cerwin Vegas with 15" woofers face down on the floor and blasted some Godflesh. That put an end to that nonsense!
