My bench top scratches easily. However, I just applied another coat and the surface was good as new except where the scratch was deep, but the color made it harder to see.

What's the difference between raw linseed oil and boiled linseed oil?
@EarlyRiserWorkshop5 ай бұрын
Mostly the drying time. Boiled linseed oil drys about two thirds quicker. Once dry (cured) they both provide the same wood protection.

It may be politically incorrect today, but this finish has for decades, been called, witch's brew. Be aware though that boiled linseed oil does not dry very fast & will keep the finish sweating on the top. it needs to be wiped down a few times.

Can I apply this finish to stained wood or must it be completely raw? I’m making a cabinet to hold kids’ backpacks. Is this a durable enough finish?
@EarlyRiserWorkshop5 ай бұрын
Yes and yes. Three coats should give enough protection for your project. Don’t use it over a product that is stain and varnish all-in-one. That’s actually a film finish preventing oil blend from penetrating into the wood.

what does the linseed oil do in a mix of Urethane and mineral spirits ?
@EarlyRiserWorkshop5 ай бұрын
Boiled linseed oil penetrates deeply into the wood fibers. Aside from adding vibrance to appearance, it does help with repelling water, and some protection against scratches.
@skipperrichman42785 ай бұрын
@@EarlyRiserWorkshop As I have already put down 4 coats of urethane I'm guessing its not a good idea to use the linseed oil ? Thanks again for the idea
@EarlyRiserWorkshop5 ай бұрын
You’re correct. The shop blend is meant to be applied to raw wood, and then later over time, to refresh the surface. Previously applied film” finishes would prevent penetration, unless stripped and sanded first.

It's solid walnut. A previous woodworker had machined it for a table. He stored it, on end, in a barn and it became warped and checked from wicking water. I bought it and rescued it for my workbench.

How are you liking the Grizzly G0869? I've been thinking about picking one up but haven't pulled the trigger yet been looking at others similar like the dewalt, skil, etc. Are there any major flaws or quirks that have come out since you got it?
@EarlyRiserWorkshop5 ай бұрын
I can recommend it as a great saw. Blade drift was an issue, but Grizzly sold the pieces i needed to upgrade. New saws are already equiped with blade locking. Features I really like: 1) Speed control, I can dial down the RPMs and install a 10" sanding disk or cut non-ferris metals and plastics. 2) Pull-out outfeed rest. 3) Saw can handle and Arbor accepts small dado stack. With a crosscut sled, and carbide blade, I've been able to cut hardwood pieces accurate enough for fine furniture. It has all of the other advantages you will find with Dewalt and others in this class. Let me know if you get one and share your experiences.

@@EarlyRiserWorkshop Thank you for taking the time to respond I really appreciate it! I do really like the idea of being able to control the speed for cutting plastics and aluminum. I make pen blanks so it would really help to not get burning or melting when cutting the resins.

If the belt brakes do you know we’re to replace?

This hasn't been an issue for me. I would suggest looking for a "linked" type belt that you can adjust for just the right tension. As a bonus, these belts also reduce vibration and noise. Please share your solution if your belt needed replacing. Thanks for asking the question, it may help others.

Very cool info. Any tips on getting cedar sapwood to absorb stain for exterior? The white sapwood on my cedar boards looks like absolute trash compared to the rest of the cedar. So much so that I really have to be incredibly picky and that's very difficult and time-consuming to do. Anyone have any thoughts?
@EarlyRiserWorkshop5 ай бұрын
Any penetrating finish will have trouble with the dense fibers in sapwood. The only method that I know of that helps, is to apply a first coat of conditioner, which helps to seal the soft wood somewhat, so the stain will not be as dark.

So I’m guessing it doesn’t really matter how much you actually put in/add (of each) as long as they’re all the same amount??
@EarlyRiserWorkshop5 ай бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. This was my first time with this blend. I think you're correct, that it really doesn't matter as long as each coat "wets" the surface. I found that multiple coats do build up the finish.

What sort of durable finish do you get? Wearproof? Waterproof? weatherproof?
@EarlyRiserWorkshop6 ай бұрын
I’m expecting the same durability as other wipe on varnishes like Watco Danish Oil. Perfect for indoor furniture but not the best choice for outdoor exposure. Since I’m using it on my workbench, I expect to reapply a coat every now and then from wear.
@garybaumann56376 ай бұрын
One thing I don't understand and you're not the only one that does it. When you apply the second and third coats, aren't you pretty much wiping all the finish off? What's left on the surface?

@EarlyRiserWorkshop9 ай бұрын
This may be a good fit since your arms and legs share the effort and ther's no impact. It's also very easy to reduce or increase the resistance during your workout. The trickiest part may be mounting and dismounting. Also, I have the seat slid to the closest setting forward, and it just meets my comfort level with feet on pedals. I'm 5'5" with a 29" inseam (for reference). May be worth a call to HCI if your considering a purchase. If you go forward, mention "EarlyRiser50" for a discount.
