S4E02 I've read about it, but this is the first time I've tried it. I mixed equal parts of MINWAX Satin Spar Urethane, Boiled Linseed Oil, & Oderless Mineral Spirits to get a universal "Shop" wood finish. Stir well, wipe on, let alone for 10-15 minutes, then wipe off the excess. I waited 24 hours between coats and applied three coats to the "backside", "underside", or bottom (I used all of these terms in the video, sorry) of an upcoming project I'm calling "Frankenbench"

Outstanding video presentation. The finished you made is exactly what I need for my project. 500 Grit?

Thanks for posting this. I used the same formula for a long time until I received a tip from a professional finisher: 3 parts varnish, one part BLO and one part mineral spirits. This allows building-up a thicker coats of varnish.

That's easy, thanks! Just bump up the varnish content to your liking.

It may be politically incorrect today, but this finish has for decades, been called, witch's brew. Be aware though that boiled linseed oil does not dry very fast & will keep the finish sweating on the top. it needs to be wiped down a few times.

Very cool info. Any tips on getting cedar sapwood to absorb stain for exterior? The white sapwood on my cedar boards looks like absolute trash compared to the rest of the cedar. So much so that I really have to be incredibly picky and that's very difficult and time-consuming to do. Anyone have any thoughts?

Any penetrating finish will have trouble with the dense fibers in sapwood. The only method that I know of that helps, is to apply a first coat of conditioner, which helps to seal the soft wood somewhat, so the stain will not be as dark.

Can I apply this finish to stained wood or must it be completely raw? I’m making a cabinet to hold kids’ backpacks. Is this a durable enough finish?
@EarlyRiserWorkshop
@EarlyRiserWorkshop Ай бұрын
Yes and yes. Three coats should give enough protection for your project. Don’t use it over a product that is stain and varnish all-in-one. That’s actually a film finish preventing oil blend from penetrating into the wood.

So I’m guessing it doesn’t really matter how much you actually put in/add (of each) as long as they’re all the same amount??
@EarlyRiserWorkshop

Sorry for the late reply. This was my first time with this blend. I think you're correct, that it really doesn't matter as long as each coat "wets" the surface. I found that multiple coats do build up the finish.

I went to the Kleanstrip website and checked out their “green” mineral spirits. The VOCs are much better, but it’s still a petroleum product. I would really like to find a plant-based product.

I went to Kleanstrip website and looked at the msds for their “green” product. Fewer VOCs but still petroleum product. Would prefer to avoid that.

What sort of durable finish do you get? Wearproof? Waterproof? weatherproof?
@EarlyRiserWorkshop
@EarlyRiserWorkshop 2 ай бұрын
I’m expecting the same durability as other wipe on varnishes like Watco Danish Oil. Perfect for indoor furniture but not the best choice for outdoor exposure. Since I’m using it on my workbench, I expect to reapply a coat every now and then from wear.

One thing I don't understand and you're not the only one that does it. When you apply the second and third coats, aren't you pretty much wiping all the finish off? What's left on the surface?
@JohnColgan.

@@garybaumann5637 repeating coats still accumulate soak in to fill surface pores in wood grain. Only wiping off excess that hasn't been absorbed

what does the linseed oil do in a mix of Urethane and mineral spirits ?
@EarlyRiserWorkshop
@EarlyRiserWorkshop Ай бұрын
Boiled linseed oil penetrates deeply into the wood fibers. Aside from adding vibrance to appearance, it does help with repelling water, and some protection against scratches.

@@EarlyRiserWorkshop As I have already put down 4 coats of urethane I'm guessing its not a good idea to use the linseed oil ? Thanks again for the idea
@EarlyRiserWorkshop
@EarlyRiserWorkshop Ай бұрын
You’re correct. The shop blend is meant to be applied to raw wood, and then later over time, to refresh the surface. Previously applied film” finishes would prevent penetration, unless stripped and sanded first.

It's solid walnut. A previous woodworker had machined it for a table. He stored it, on end, in a barn and it became warped and checked from wicking water. I bought it and rescued it for my workbench.

What's the difference between raw linseed oil and boiled linseed oil?
@EarlyRiserWorkshop
@EarlyRiserWorkshop Ай бұрын
Mostly the drying time. Boiled linseed oil drys about two thirds quicker. Once dry (cured) they both provide the same wood protection.
