It seems to me that the greatest composers often led the most tragic lives-Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Bartók, and others. It was, perhaps, their struggles that fueled their genius, allowing them to create music that resonates so deeply with the spirit.

It's ironic that concerns for musical authenticity in historic performance practice rarely extend to the visual presentation of opera! Much of the grisaille in this production gives the impression that the action takes place in a prison camp.

Gracias maravillosa documental. Schubert inmensamente schubert.

This sounds overall intriguing. I wonder if french baroque composers are nowadays in the shadow of Händel, and foremost Bach. How to measure it?

I'm not familiar with this pianist. I saw that his version was quite a bit longer than others and have to say that I think the music benefits from a slightly slower pace in the fast passages - you actually have enough time to hear the tune!

Laszlo Polgar jako Filip, to mistrz nad mistrzami wspaniały
Rameau's nasty critic Collé finally "graciously" conceded, after his death, that Rameau did not give his best, but only what audiences of his time could absorb, or something like that. I've always had the feeling that he at last wrote this one for himself- Rameau at that best, unconstrained by conventional taste of his time. For this Ramoneur, it is the finest French opera of the century, Gluck notwithstanding, nor Gardiner's preference for Leclair's Scylla et Glaucis. Alphise's unthinkable, bold abdication would surely have come as a shock and scandal if ever it had been performed.

What a full-bodied performance! Even the five ladies first scene is superb. Polaski is very much in control with unrestrained dramatic where called for, and the correct voice colors in others.

4:24 fits nicely under the fingers so many pianists go like the clappers. Interesting to see such a famously dazzling pianist instead take it at a more leisurely pace.

No one plays the last three Schubert piano sonatas better than Mr. Serkin, although Sir Schiff comes close, though in a slightly different style. Of course, Mr. Serkin and Sir Schiff played an d studied together in Marlboro years ago. They are both giants! lang Lieb Mr. Serkin and Sir Andras! They keep Schuberts works alive for future generations.
