This guy is telling it like it was … the NVA would have a hard time assaulting LZ Ripcord… it’s to steep… But the other line company’s out in the field were in deep trouble… I was in the 1st Cavalry 1967-68 … 11B/11C … operation Delaware April 19, 1968 our company went into the A Shau with 155 men … 35 days later we came out with 105 Ragamuffins… Yeah … been there and done that … the last 3 days I was in the valley I got air lifted down to the old abandoned air strip in the north end of the A Shau … I lived in a hole like Bugs 🥕 Bunny for three days on gun target line from Laos chewing on 122mm artillery … yeah this guys bringing back old memories. The Huey’s might take one small arms fire and it’d go down … or I’ve seen them take 100+ round and make it back to Camp Evans … I’ve got more hole in me that John Kerry, but never got a Purple Heart 💜. Just the medics pouring alcohol on my ass … and get back on that chopper… yeah I’ve helped load the dead and wounded onto choppers … I don’t know how many NVA I’ve killed … I qualified expert with the M-14 and M-16 and I don’t miss … the Army Brass kept LZ Ripcord quite … the Stars and Stripes newspaper Army rag did a story about us … titled “The 35 days of the Ragamuffins” … I was in three of three of the four I Corps areas 1-2-3 … Cambodia sucks … OH …I was drafted … Came out an E-5 Sargent… 1967-68 was bad enough, but very few know how bad 1969 was …

Dude was cherry, didn’t do any time with the grunts and goes out with a team with zero experience? That had to be nerve racking for the guys. "Operation Buffalo, the Marines fight for the DMZ" written by Keith William Nolan is a minute by minute recap, by survivors of the 2 July 1967 ambush I can recommend as insightful reading of this horrific day in our Marine Corps history. I knew David Hendry and have talked to other Marines of Bravo 1/9. Was in amtracs and we supported the grunts. So pleased to meet Derl Horn through this interview. Semper Fidelis to you Derl as we hold the memory of all of those in Operation Buffalo initiated by the contact of Bravo 1/9.
