Critikal had a large following back in the day that steadily grew from hundreds of subs to where it is now without any massive jumps or drop offs. Look at his social blade, it's just normal growth at the same rate for the first few years, then the rate rose a bit higher after 2016 when he shifted his type of content and image and started sitting on camera instead of talking over gameplay, but it's been pretty stable since 2018. He never blew up overnight, he's been steadily growing because people like him and his videos.

I watched Jim’s “Back from the store” unexpected stream just the other day, 2 momths after the fact. It was a fun stream. But this, this stream right here and how it opens…. Us culture war veterans miss Jim and his flippantly salient points delivered in a way only he could.
