You can just tell that the inside of that opulent department store was redolent with the scent of cinnamon, cedar wood, and balsam.

This scene should be proclaimed as the world's cultural heritage. This is a celebration of a small-town or country lifestyle.

Oh God this is an epic line😂😂😂 Knowing already that those two are kind hearted and are just teasing her is even better and makes you like them even more. And then there is off course the awkwardness of Elinor ... And Barton that doesn't get what's going on makes it even better! 😂😂😂😂 I can't!

Nobody seems to be commenting on how Elinor collapses onto the sofa when Marianne (yet again) falsely accuses her of not "showing" her love for Edward enough. It's such an unjust criticism, and Elinor is profoundly wounded by it, but as usual, bears it with dignity. Elinor's dignity and self-command throughout the novel (and this movie) were just incredible.

But a very clever manipulator. The way she gradually reveals her "secret" to Elinor in the book is genius.

I love this scene. Horrid little Lucy has not yet seen Edward but he has clearly found time to visit Elinor! Lucy's face is a joy to behold when Edward's visit is announced.

The surprise heroine of the scene is Marianne. Distressed as she is, she gives Edward the frank and friendly welcome that Elinor cannot muster. Her carelessness of convention -- she calls him by his first name -- proves to be a strength. She's also delightfully oblivious to Lucy's barb.

This is something I could never understand, unless I am missing something - Edward lost inheritance because of Lucy. Wealth went to his brother. Lucy ran to follow the money and Edward’s brother married her and lost nothing. Why Edward wasn’t reinstated as a rightful heir then? If his engagement to Lucy was the reason of his troubles?
@madhurimachatterjee79884 ай бұрын
Because it was settled on Robert irretrievably. Which means it can't be undone. Also, Robert was his mother's favorite son. Unlike Edward, the same mistake was easier forgiven. Yup, the partiality is mind boggling. I am glad that their mom got stuck with Lucy anyway, and had to accept her children as her grandkids.

I’ve always been an Elinor - practical, reserved, believing it more prudent to often hide my feelings than aire them openly and hurt others. But man, the older I get the more I’m frustrated by Marianne, even more than I ever was. She’s so completely self-absorbed. Even in this moment of _Elinor’s_ great suffering, it’s _Marianne_ who has to be comforted, BY ELINOR! Some people may not agree with Marianne ending up with Brandon, because he’s so much older than she, but I think she desperately needs his maturity and grounding. She needs to grow up.

Adult heterosexual men do not act the way Mr. Stevens acts. The most plausible (obvious?) explanation is that Mr. Stevens is homosexual -- at a time, in a society in which being gay is unacceptable.

"I am not wishing him too much good," said Marianne at last with a sigh, "when I wish his secret reflections may be no more unpleasant than my own. He will suffer enough in them." "Do you compare your conduct with his?" "No. I compare it with what it ought to have been; I compare it with yours."

It's so amazing how Elinor in the and goes back to Marianne, not to get comfort, but to comfort her knowing she has hurt her. She has just shown that she is in pain, yet again she goes to care for her sister. This scene is so powerful

But tell that to the Romance division. After all no one gets paid if you do not marry. The weight loss ads, hair, shoes, makeup, wardrobe, engagement ring, wedding service, honeymoon, moving expenses, real estate, insurance, shall I go on? Home furnishings, new business start-ups, and oh, don’t forget legal! Oh my. 😊
