I discovered the friends album when listening to The Beach Boys discography. I heard pet sounds and for Christmas one year I got the beach boys surfing Safari album. And when I was in Wildwood New Jersey with my high school jazz band I picked up the beach boys today. So I was going through the rest of the discography I decided to listen to friends one day. And I gotta say I hate the album not because it’s terrible but because it comes out in an era where everyone was making loud rock ‘n’ roll music and the Beach boys release a soft, easy breezy type of album. I mean, the title track is good and there’s a few good songs, but I still don’t like that album.

Both sides of that Hendrix and Redding live album are excellent. The burnt Beatles discs took me back. I read in some magazine, I want to say Blender that The Beatles were better in mono and it was before the 2009 reissues so I ended up burning CDs from downloads of the Dr. Ebbetts collection and the early 90's CD singles box and added bonus tracks from bootlegs to the end of every disc. I still have memories of walking around with my CD walkman playing those. Then about a year later they did the official mono CD box and I saved up and got it. Favourite recent finds: The book Respect Yourself: The Story of Stax Records by Robert Gordon, Shakey - The Neil Young biography at a yard sale for a quarter, an 80's Columbia CD of Santana's Greatest Hits from my library's sale bin for a quarter, John Wick 4 used on Blu-Ray and The Beatles Anthology DVD set for a pretty decent price. I'm set up for 5.1 surround and I wanted to make some rips of some of the unique surround mixes on there.

A duophonic Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) record. I got it for 14 dollars WITH Little Douce Coupe but in mono. Little Douce Coupe sounds way better, and the Summer Days record has that delay in one channel and sounds pretty distorted but not as much on higher volumes. It's pretty beat, but the cover looks great and vintage and hopefully I'll find a good quality mono one sometime. Or full dimensional stereo, but that would be hard to find. They also came with promotional sleeves with other albums on them, they are yellow and have black and white pictures of the albums and describes the "greatest stereo you've ever heard on all new capitol stereo disks!" have you found any of these sleeves yourself, Giggens?

Giggens. I was 12 when Little Girl I Once Knew came out. I was hooked!. Then I got the Party album for Christmas. I spent the rest of my teenage years getting the current albums as they came out, and getting the 10 or so albums back to Surfin Safari. When Friends (the single) came out, I first heard it on my car radio. I had to pull over to the side of the road to listen carefully to it. It was so different and I loved it. Still do. When Friends(the album) came out, it was just the NEXT ALBUM to get for my favorite band. Thanks. Lamont

Great program! I have seen the video of the Olympia concert. I was 16 the first time I saw the Beach Boys at the Lagoon amusement park near Salt Lake City(yea...THAT Lagoon). It was in Sept 1969 about a month after the Olympia concert. The set list was just about the same the the Olympia concert, with the exception of the opening song (Salt Lake City). I remember the slow song medley, wishing they were playing the entire songs. They played I Can Hear Music, Breakaway, Cotton Fields(the 20/20 version) and finally ended up with Johnny B Goode. I remember it being just great! The opening act was Paul Revere and the Raiders. They were also the opening act on the Olympia Concert. They must have finished their European tour and did some more cities with the Beach Boys in the US. I specifically remember Mike getting the verses mixed up on Sloop JB. Funny the things we remember 55 years ago. Thanks as always for the great info. Lamont

I'm a big Zombies fan. I own, and absolutely love, Colin's first 2 albums. "One Year" from 1971 may be one of my favorite 1970s albums. Colin's "Caroline Goodbye", his version of Denny Laine's "Say You Don't Mind", Tim Hardin's "Misty Roses" and Rod Argent/Chris White's "She Loves the Way They Love Her" are just awesome, beautifully arranged songs from his debut. I've haven't heard of this one and I'll try to dig it out now to experience it.

Boy, do I remember this period of time...late '60's. I had suddenly gone from being a casual listener of the Beach Boys music to a HUGE fan, at the precise time interest in the group was drying up in the U.S. Talk about feeling alone. No Internet then, of course. I had no idea that there was an entire, vibrant world of love for their music at the time. I was just in the wrong place. Amazing to hear that they would perform "The Warmth Of The Sun" flowing into "Don't Worry Baby", along with an eclectic selection of other songs. Wasn't aware of this album. Will have to get it! There were two groups, of two camps, when it came to the appreciation of Pet Sounds in the 1960s. There was Other musicians VS average music consumer. But there was also the listener and music producers and critics... in Europe. Over in Europe, Pet Sounds was appreciated by pretty much everyone, at least I'm pretty sure that was at least the case in the UK.

It just occurred to me. From the sixties until like 2012, the version of Good Vibrations that we all knew and loved from the radio... was incomplete. It, along with heroes and villains, was given to the label because the label needed something to sell. It's correct to say we only had the "single/radio edit" mixes. But unlike most singles, where they start with a complete song, and edit it down for the radio audience timespan, Good Vibrations was given to the studio as the single knowing that more was going to be added to it when all of the other songs were complete. We didn't get anything close to an official album version until the Smile Sessions came out. (I have my Record Store day 7' of Good Vibrations "Smile sessions version"... or maybe it's a 10', I don't remember).

I actually decided to listen to their discography for the first time this summer! Strangely, I heard Vegetables and that just sold me instantly. I did so much research on the band, my friends got so sick of hearing me talk about it. About halfway through, after loving Smiley Smile and Wild Honey (both are still top 5), and after reading that Friends was lo-fi tranquil pop, I knew I had to save it for last. Before I listened to it a few days ago, my friends decided to get to a Beach Boys album before I could and they let me know ahead of time how much I'd love Busy Doin' Nothin'. It might be too early to call, but Friends is my #1 Beach Boys album. Busy Doin' Nothin' is one of their best songs ever! Great video, perfect timing!

"There's No Other (Like My Baby)" reached the top 10 in Calgary, if nowhere else. I agree with a lot of the choices here, but I'll add a couple that I haven't seen mentioned yet: "Wind Chimes" (B-side of "Wild Honey") and "Little Bird" (B-side of "Friends"). For that matter, I haven't seen any mention of "409," "Shut Down," "In My Room," or "Why Do Fools Fall in Love." And "Let's Go Away for Awhile" (B-side of "Good Vibrations") gets ignored; I like it much more now than when I first heard it.

The song "Friends" I first heard on a dubious European compilation from the 80s. It was a proper collection, but they used a lot of inferior sources for it, lots of songs in duophonic etc. So it was rather lo-fi but I loved the song. As far as the album goes, I was just digging in the Beach Boys discography with the awesome 1990 twofers, and "Friends" was a logical step. Plus I love all those psychedelic looking album covers from the late 60s, so the artwork was just screaming "listen to me!".It's one of my favourite BB albums.

Back in 2022, I dived head first into The Beach Boys discography after rediscovering them through the Feel Flows boxset. At some point during my deep dive, I came across Friends while I was checking out more and more of their music from the 60’s to the 50th anniversary. First thing I noticed was the beautiful album cover, then the equally beautiful songs inside, then as I listened to it more I came to the conclusion that it really was and is one of my favorite albums of theirs.
