WRT Iwatani & Nel, it has been reported that Nel abandoned Iwatani since the suit so in June, Iwatani hired an operations manager (who use to work at True Zero). Just last week, Iwatani's Seal Beach station has reopened (24/7) and they are reopening Corona (M-F 8-3, check station status). So Iwatani appears to be doing their best despite the situation with Nel. They have four other completed stations that should see reopening in the coming months.

Nice video! I wathed your contents from Japan. The price of hydrogen fuel in Japan at the end of November is about 1,700 yen per kilogram. When converted to dollars at the current exchange rate, that's approximately $11. While the strong dollar is certainly a factor, why is hydrogen fuel so expensive in California or USA?

If Trump gets his way with tariffs on imported vehicles, the Mirai, produced in Japan, will not be economically feasible in the U.S. There is hope with the CR-V e:FCEV from Honda. It's going to be made in Ohio. Toyota will have to make an H2 vehicle in the U.S. to avoid tariffs. As for the price of H2. Laxing the rule on renewable sourced H2 should, probably not by much, decrease the price at the pump. The future of H2 remains unclear as always. Also, Trump wants to get rid of incentives on alternative fuel vehicles. So, you'd be paying sticker on these vehicles.

There are several bus agencies in California that either already have hydrogen buses or have funding to buy h2 buses. Currently, O.C., Sunline (Palm Springs), GET (Bakersfield), and AC Transit (Alameda) have h2 buses running. Some other agencies who have received funding for hydrogen buses are NCTD (Oceanside/N.San Diego), Humboldt (Eureka), Riverside and Santa Cruz. Of note to us light duty drivers, Sunline Transit will be opening soon, a publicly accessible LD station for us in Thousand Palms!!! Also, Humboldt Transit Authority will have a light duty dispenser for us in Eureka, though this is two to three years from now.

It's hard to say how the new administration will affect the hydrogen market and infrastructure. The president-elect is transactional, so if the industry praises him or gives him money, he'll support it. However, with Musk already giving him campaign money and since Musk is against hydrogen, it can be a serious issue for us.

The Hydrogen Honda CRV is already available in certain California markets. You can only lease it and you basically have to get permission to get one. Honda verifies that you live close enough to Hydrogen stations that are actually operational. That car has less than 200 HP but leases for about the same price as a Volvo XC60 plugin hybrid that has 450+ HP and way more room. It also gets about 40 miles of electric only range but it can go more than 400 miles on a single tank of gas where the Honda can only do 270 miles and it can’t leave the state of California.

If you wanted to stick with hydrogen, the plug in CRV from Honda might be interesting, would love to see you at least test drive one on camera, it gives you a enough EV only range that hunting for hydrogen would not be quite so desperate and the plug in running costs would be one tenth those of hydrogen, you would need a socket to plug it into, a regular 110V on a driveway is probably enough for your daily miles, I don't know if the CRV will come with a fuelcard too, but with a plug in, it should last a lot longer time wise. I want to know if the hydrogen is actually green, if you dig into BC's HTEC website they admit it's fossil fuel hydrogen once they run out of green (electrolyzer) hydrogen, but with no numbers given as to when that happens, I don't see any journalism at all around holding hydrogen producers or retailers accountable for their green creds, and I think a persistent KZbinr is more likely to get closer to the truth than a lazy environmental "journalist". Depreciation happens for new cars, and especially for fast moving tech, my brand new EV from 5 years ago is also worth a lot less than when I bought it, not as bad as the Mirai.
@ColtonBlumhagen

So what actually happens when there’s no more hydrogen stations? Can you buy a bulk tank and have it at home?
@brushlessmotoring
@brushlessmotoring Ай бұрын
The pressures involved, 10,000 psi / 700 bar, would make it a very expensive (and bulky) machine to have at home, look up Mike Strizki's Hydrogen House Project for someone with enough capital and land to use lower pressure hydrogen and a huge solar array to do seasonal off-grid storage, a capable and passionate hydrogen engineer, he is able to fuel a hydrogen car at home, it's an interesting window into what that might look like if ever productized. There have been conversations on reddit about converting the Mirai from a hydrogen EV to a battery EV, as it's an electric car already, in theory you could scoop out all the hydrogen parts and replace them with a DC fast chargeable battery, I don't know if the value of the fuel cell (contains platinum) would pay for the conversion. But, practically, take whatever you can get and buy another car is the simplest option, the Lexus 450e is probably a comparable ride quality to the Lexus inspired Mirai Gen 2, although it's not that great an EV regarding range, efficiency and charging speeds, but some folks want to stick with Toyota and these are their EV offerings at this time (bZ4x and Solterra too)

Toyota is at fault for this. They wanted to push a whole new fuel type but were so lazy they didn’t bother to invest in infrastructure. Tesla knew electric cars were iffy when they started so they spent lots of time and money to create a super charger network to support them. But Toyota just made the car and decided that was it. The biggest con in the fuel network sucks because there aren’t enough and they aren’t reliable. The car itself is great
@bruhabox
@bruhabox Ай бұрын
Toyota is not at fault. You don't think they are investing in the infrastructure? They are indirectly paying $15,000 per vehicle to the station developers. Hydrogen refueling requires cooperation of hydrogen producers and hydrogen dispensers. Unlike Tesla who wants to control the market, Toyota and other companies decided to work as a team. “If You Want to Run Fast, Run Alone. If You Want to Run Far, Run Together.”
@jetx2599

@@bruhabox if they wanted to make this work, they would roll out Toyota branded hydrogen stations that they solely run to ensure reliability and quality. The 3rd party hydrogen stations are terribly unreliable.
@bruhabox
@bruhabox Ай бұрын
@@jetx2599 Just as Toyota USA use 3rd parties (dealers) to sell their cars they are not about to deal with day-to-day operation of hydrogen stations and they are not going to build hydrogen production plants. Besides, the lack of reliability is because the station equipment manufacturing is new and those manufacturers are learning on the fly. The first three years the stations operated decently because there were very few cars using the stations. Once the number of cars increased, they started to fail because they could not handle the back-to-back fueling. True Zero has been successful in improving the equipment by improving and retrofitting the equipment working with other manufacturers. This is something they never intended. They, and other station developers, thought they would install the equipment and it would work just fine. This did not happen. Air Products doesn't want to put a lot of money into their stations because they are getting out of the light-duty business. Iwatani has been stuck with bad equipment (Nel/Cavendish Hydrogen), so much so that they are suing the company.

If you are considering the Honda CR-V FCEV, here are some info and some of my experience with the Clarity FCEV... There are three lease options with new CR-V: * 2 year, 60,000 mile allowable, $25,000 fuel card, $489/month * 3 year, 36,000 mile allowable, $15,000 fuel card, $459/month * 6 year, 72,000 mile allowable, $30,000 fuel card, $389/month With the Clarity, people were able to extend the lease and, if they had money left over on their fuel card, they were able to extend its use. Not sure if this would occur given there are now three lease options. Also with the Clarity, maintenance costs were not included, so that may be extra expense to consider. EPA range is only 270 miles with 4.3 kg hydrogen tank, but with an EV range of 29 miles. Norm Reeves Honda in Irvine has the car right now. Car Pros Honda in El Monte is suppose to have them in the future.
