Tustin Toyota said the $15K fuel card only comes with 2018 and newer models which are 'Gold Certified'. The cheapest one on autotrader seems to be about $9K. So a 40% discount on the price of hydrogen. And if you sell the car for half price, that's another 35% discount. About $7.50/kg. $43 for a fill up. So about the same cost as a 50mpg ICE car.

Another hydrogen FCEV option should be available this fall: Honda CR-V e:FCEV. It is a FCEV plug-in hybrid, so you can charge up and get about 29 miles just on battery. The estimated EPA range is 270 miles, much lower than the Gen2 Mirai XLE. Being a CR-V, it may provide more cargo area compared to the Gen2. I'm not sure what the tank layout is like. It will be Lease-only, but no prices have been announced. They haven't said anything about a fuel card or the amount they would provide. It is being built in Ohio, so there may be a possibility for federal tax credits. I'm not sure if being Lease-only would affect being able to take advantage of that savings.

They're only planning to make 300 annually currently, so would be a fairly rare (and thus interesting?) car.

I would say get the new Prius (Prime if you can find it), but $6k for a Gen 1 Mirai with $15k more hydrogen doesn't sound like a bad deal

Rav 4 Prime seems to be a very popular car with great utility and a good combination of EV and hybrid functionality. If you’re wanting to go full EV, I don’t see many videos of the new Volvo EX cars so those could be interesting videos. Ioniq 6 also has super cheap lease deals right now. Tesla if you want the supercharger convenience but the KZbin market for that is so saturated.

WRT the change in nozzles, the older model was notorious for truly freezing up. There were instances where ice would build up in various locations (mostly under trigger release) and it would take a long time to release the nozzle from the car. The newer design is much improved. I have only heard of a couple of instances where ice prevented the release, but it only took a couple of minutes to resolve.

@Mirai Club I would do the cheapest gen 1 route. Because with the 30% or $4000 tax credit. And the $15,000 fuel card. On a Gold certified one. I think you could almost if not get free fuel for as long as they have the $15,000 fuel card. By buying a cheap Gen 1 then trading it on another cheap gen 1 after the fuels card runs out.

I am getting a 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance next month. 510+ HP and it has more interior room and luggage space. I have super efficient Hankook iON EVO AS tires for it that will allow it to get about 350 miles on a full charge. With the tax credit it is about $46k.

Next car depends on what you are into and of course budget! Corvette C8 is a pretty interesting car, as is an Ioniq 5 N line, an EV with a fake gearbox and rev limiters! For quirkier alternative energy vehicles, vegetable oil or methanol? Hard to say what would scratch your itch for something new - clearly a Tesla is out, there are are so many Tesla-Tubers, you would be lost in the crowd, and what is there to say anymore that hasn't already been said .... but maybe some of the more obscure EV's or hybrids .... Prius Prime and a run of river water wheel to charge it up? Something interesting I hope! As others have said, the Honda CR-V plug in FCEV will be interesting, shame the EV range isn't a little more.

Picked up a 2020 Mirai with 29k miles from Tustin Toyota for $12,000. It came with the fuel card because it was “Gold Certified”. So make sure if you are going to get one it’s not silver certified, but gold certified. Love the car. I don’t drive much, so I fill up every two weeks.

4:37 if you want to stay in the "hydrogen universe" I would probably look at the Fuel cell Honda CR-V. Just to see if the plug in capability makes a big difference in ownership experience. If you are "done with hydrogen" I don't know if it's out yet (or even still happening), but going with the Aptera might not be a bad option if you are looking for something truly "out there". the last thing might be a little more work than you would like (a.k.a. a lot of it), but possibly do a "kit car EV" like something EV West offers. They used to do a factory 5 818 kit, but that car is sadly out of production. So you could try their universal kit with another factory five car (cobra or coupe) or something like the Ultma or Caterham.

Why wouldn't you just buy the $6K certified car and get the $15K fuel card. That's like paying $12 per kg. One question: I've watched your videos on and off, and it seems like the price has dropped from $36/kg to this $30/kg recently.

I don’t drive a hydrogen car, and on top of that am not in CA, so can’t say with certainty, but I think it’s that it’s at this particular station that it costs $30/kg, and that the other ones (like those at the gas stations) price the gas at $36/kg.

Go BEV and get solar pv at home if you can. So many BEV options and you can fuel up at any powerpoint or public fast charger when required. Not as quick as hydrogen fuel up, but … Get home; plug in; cook & eat dinner; go to bed; wake up; unplug & drive!

Basically getting a scrap car with “free” fuel for a year or two. Once the fuel card runs out you can always donate it and write it off on taxes. Or just sell for scrap. Nearest station to me is 25 miles round trip though, which is like $18 in hydrogen just to go to the station and back lol seems too inconvenient but good if you need a cheap car and are ok with the risk.

How is this the Mirai Club? I never hear anything positive. Is this guy a mole for EV?
@koi_chan26
@koi_chan26 4 ай бұрын
What positive things are there? H2 prices are insane, the 15k fuel card will ehaust way faster than it would have when prices were around $12-13 but now $36/kg. Also infrastructure is really bad and has not had any major improvements. In my case stations actually disappeared thanks to Shell abandoning H2 for LD pasewnger vehicles. SF has 0 H2 stations anymore but I dont see True Zero, Air Products or any other company trying to help out. We're sitting ducks at the hands of Toyota and these H2 companies who barely disclose anything to people who actually drive an H2 vehicle. What good news is there?
@bruhabox
@bruhabox 4 ай бұрын
I don't think he's a "mole for EV". His videos are not rants of negativity, but an honest assessment of his experience, which I appreciate. He has had issues with the creaking, as a few others have also reported. I have not had that problem with my XLE. For my two FCEV leases, I never depleted my fuel cards because I do not drive as much. I usually fill up at Baldwin Park which rarely goes into limited mode and does not run out of hydrogen (unlike Diamond Bar). Not to say that it doesn't go down, but I can afford to either wait for repairs or drive to another station like Burbank.

@@koi_chan26 I won't get personal and call you a fool but you have to drive the Mirai to understand how nice this car drives. The big knock is the hydrogen cost. Since I am central OC, fueling stations are very accessible. IF the fuel gets reasonable, we're good. If not and Toyota has the same deal in 3 years, I'll trade it back for a new Mirai. If not, I'll deal with a $1,500 car. My problem with you and the author is that neither mentions how great the car drives.
