This, in my opinion, is why the original Ice Age film is vastly underrated compared to the others. Manny and Diego both had a reasonable hatred for humans, but throughout the movie they are able to grow, address their anger and deep-rooted trauma and are eventually able to embrace forgiveness during the cave scene (and when they return the baby). Their families were wiped out for resources by the humans which is pretty dark for an animated movie about prehistoric talking animals, yet the herd is still able to reconcile with the humans at the end of the film. The first film, while it certainly had its funny moments, was brilliantly thought out yet sadly it was also outshined by the crappy cash-grab sequels that wasted time on cheap comedy, dumb jokes and slapstick humor.
