If Sweden doesn’t still use the “full checkers” flagman at the finish line it would be tragic. It’s just says Swedish motocross. Vimond got no rest during this race. Banks looked so good for most of the moto. I’m guessing that perhaps he seized the big CR. Carla just blew my mind. The man was really carrying some speed at the end down the straights and long bends. I’ll never forget Carla just putting a beat down on everybody at Carlsbad. Vimond is so typical of great French motocrossers. His racecraft was off the charts amazing. How has a country the size of France produce so many greats consistently since the dawn of motocross?

Det ser ut som om Vimond och Leif kör Yamahas vattenkylda 500?
@perlundstrom33878 жыл бұрын

The 80's, what a great era for Motocross and life. But back then, Europe banned double jumps, and this track looks like a TT track--but a bit longer. Freeway!

Who rode that #16 Maico??
@perlundstrom33879 жыл бұрын
Phil Larsson Rider #16 was Bert von ZITZEWITZ from Germany. He became 22 in Heat 2. Not classified in Heat 1 (only 8 laps of 20).
@phillarsson82539 жыл бұрын
Per Lundström Hi Per, thanks for your reply! Was he a privateer? Never heard or seen his name before but his Maico sure looked hot wtith that rear swingarm and rear disc brake. Thanks for sharing this footage. You don't happen to have any pictures or video footage of the 1985 grand prix in Sweden by chance? Next to a Maico-addict, I'm a huge Danny 'Magoo' Chandler fan, you see and any footage would be so welcome. His daughter has become a good friend of mine and she loves retrieving any footage of her dad. She only knew him when he was already in a wheelchair due to his accident at the supercross in Bercy late 1985 as she was just three months old when that accident happened.

+Per Lundström met Phil at Broome-Tioga National many yeas ago, drove all teh way from Washington state on the othe side of the US. Nice guy.

+Phil Larsson Yes, privateer, one of eh best that never got teh full factory ride, he had some B-team support but no airplane trips t races. Funny, today, guy Phil would've lapped are on factory teams and are national number 80, Phil was national US number 28 at one point.
@phillarsson82539 жыл бұрын
+vetb882. I know Phil Larson made his ride into the factory US Honda team in '84 but he apparently lost that ride pretty quick. He must have been pretty talented or he wouldn't have gotten that Honda ride in the first place but I guess US Honda was pretty strict in selecting their rides (they dumped Magoo after his accident in his back yard track late 84). I got nicknamed 'Phil' after friends of mine saw Phil Larson doing his thing in Ettelbrück (Luxembourg GP 1986) on his Maico where he impressed with his spectacular style. I was looking forward so much to see him ride in the Belgian grand prix and he was listed on the anticipating riders list but I'm still wondering so far wether he made it through the qualifications or if it was brother Mike who took over from then when Phil got injured. One thing you gotta remember Phil for and that's the Hawkstone double which he completed in practice but everyone seems to give credit to Georges Jobé (bless him) to be the first one to double that particular jump because of the well known picture where he passed André Malherbe on that jump.

Still just under 8 minutes in, and wow, get a load of that KX500. '84 air cooled mill, and rear swingarm and suspension looking like '85 production. Yet another very interesting mix of technologies. I loved this period for MX bikes. The changes from year to year, and even mid season on Factory bikes was so trick for the time. Some exotic bikes here.
@vetb88210 жыл бұрын
nope, SR500, factory works KXs were called SR, Special Racer. Suzuki works bikes were RA-125, RN-250, RH 500cc. :-) You're welcome.
@SixSpeedSS10 жыл бұрын
Wow, just started watching, and Perrsons Husky must be a Works bike or prototype test mule or somethin. Drum front brake, but the '85 single shock frame, with an '84 type left side panel, and an airbox cover lookin totally one off. Has a floating rear brake, so guess they'd have considered that a CR/MX bike. So glad I stumbled onto this, as Husky footage is limited. Plus I have an '83 500XC, '85 500XC, and an '88 510TE sitting right here a couple feet away. Awesome footage, thanks for uploading!

I just loved the look of the 1985-1987 big bore Husqvarna, so I bought a couple of them about fifteen years ago and have only ridden them a couple of times each. Probably not fair to compare my production versions to Leif's factory works bikes. And for sure, its not fair to compare my so-so talent to that of Leif Perrsons. Man, was he ever a stylish rider!! It is good however to know that the unique design of this motorcycles had a modicum of success at it's high point. One of mine is a '86 with an 87 430cc engine and the other a '86 500cc six speed version. Pretty much bone stock except for different needle jet to clean up the ratty bottom end. Thank you so much for posting this unique and rare footage!! I only wish Leif could have stayed on top of that beauty until the checkered flag fell.

YOU HAVE THOSE BIKES? the factory white ones with water cooling?
@Ggordonhorseballs10 жыл бұрын
Mine are production versions. Certainly not pre-production versions like Persson is riding. Very very similar with the exception of front disc which came on the production versions. Of course you never know how much titanium etc. is hiding behind the production appearing exterior. My 430 for sure hooks up better than the 500. The 500 however, still has the original Trelleborg rear which is about as poor a choice as one could make for my local soil conditions. I guess I am hopelessly stuck in the mid-eighties as I also have an 87 kx500 which I have never ridden!! I just do not envy today's riders choice of machinery and rules meant to keep large two strokes out of production. But, whatever!
