I recognized that area, and have brought boats out of Tomales Bay thru waves like that. I am so glad there are USCG folks in the area!

Im planning to become a rescue swimmer when i get out of high school. Im good at swimming, plus, im a boy scout, so hopefully, the skills i get from that can help me in the coast guard academy.

Served on the Rush 1974-75. Home port then was in Alemeda, California across from Jack London square. The Rush conducted fisheries patrols in the Aleutian Islands and in the Gulf of Alaska. We seized 3 Japanese fishing vessels which were illegally fishing and conducted 2 Medivacs of badly burned freighter seamen. One of the Medivacs involved the first landing of a Navy twin rotor helo on the flight deck of a 378 and the first satellite video consult from an offshore onsite cutter with medical personnel at the VA hospital in San Francisco. This was an interesting adventure for an 18 year old.

I remember that ship well. My husband at the time served on that boat. The men he served with were a fine group of men. I cried when I saw the replay of the sinking of this ship. Anyone that served on the Coast Guard Cutter Spike back in 1982 and 1983 leave a message and how to get intouch. Let's get together and have a reunion.

James, your father was my Engineering Petty Officer ( EPO ) when I was stationed in Depoe Bay, Or. in the early 80s. I was saddened when I heard of his passing and would like to express my condolences to you and your family. I live in Florida and someday hope to visit the ship named after him but I will always know it as “ Rudy “

Thank you for your service. I was on this boat when this occurred. The US Coast Guards did an outstanding job. The Navy veteran they rescued is doing very well.

Not reasonable as the yellow strap (on boat's port side) was taut so straps and ropes flipped it - - not the boat righting itself - - - by itself.

Don't listen to any of the Coasties posting on here that they stay on the boats by using safety belts. They're just being modest. They stay on deck thanks to the weight of their ginormous BRASS BALLS! Well done, Coast Guard! Semper Paratus!!!

This new class of Cutter (NSC) should have come out of the shipyard armed like a US Navy FFG. Unfortunately congress likes to spend money on pet projects that keep getting them elected. I believe that the day is coming when we will wish that they were fitted out like a FFG.
