Hello! I am currently a Australian Army Cadet in need of a slouch hat press and is wondering, would the hat press keep all sides flat?
@Ashapplications2 ай бұрын
G'day Dooey, good question. My Slouch Hat Press and Carriers are primarily designed to store, protect, transport and showcase the Grade 1 Slouch hat (brim up). It's secondary role is to do the same for the Grade Two (brim down). The brim of the grade two is mostly covered and is always supported when in the press. The four wing nuts can be tighten to to exert varying degrees of pressure which is evenly distributed across the brim. To concentrate the pressure onto an area of the brim not covered by the top timber, simply rotate the hat within the carrier. Applying the how to stiffen a slouch hat brim techniques and conscientious use of the press will provide you with a flat brim on the grade two. You can even place a suitable book on the small uncovered area of the brim for good measure. Relevant links below: How to Iron (and stiffen the brim) of the slouch hat kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpaWe2Sfo7qpntE How to Store a Slouch Hat kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5TUd6OBnNGpkJY Packing to Travel with a Slouch Hat and Uniforms kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJbTlo2hbZiIrKc I used these for most of my military career, never had any issues with my hats. Every one who owns a slouch hat should have one. Hope this helps. Regards Ash

@Ashapplications Thanks for the reply, I'm looking forward to purchasing one soon after I get my slouch hat. You should also consider making one that covers the full brim of the hat as it would be a nice thing for cadets to have.

G'day Ash. Do you find you get rub marks or spots on your white mess jacket while its hanging? Is a suit bag or something like that a good idea? Also would you recommend getting it dry cleaned or ironing it yourself. (I have buggered one up previously with an iron). Do you ever use bleach on it to get rid of marks etc? Sorry for all the questions but you know your stuff. Cheers!
@Ashapplications5 ай бұрын
G'day Michael, great question. Yes I keep my Mess jacket in a suit holder, especially when travelling. In lieu of suit holder you can cut a section from the bottom of a garbage bag and place that over the coat hanger. The white jacket is a magnet for marks. Best option for a stained Mess Jacket is to take it to a dry cleaner. Next option is to soak it in Napisan for 24h and wash in warm water. Be careful when ironing; the iron needs to be 100% clean, otherwise you will be ironing in marks. Dry cleaners are the best option for removing the stain. Hope this helps. Regards Ash

They mention you do this at kapooka polishing brass. Someone mentioned brass strips but I don't know what that is. They said don't step on the brass strips so I assume its on the floor.

how long do you get to iron when at kapooka? spare time? not much info out there on that in particular. good video
@Ashapplications6 ай бұрын
Good Question. You are fairly cramped for time at Kapooka, especially when you have night lessons. My advice is to ALWAYS be preparing. Prepare for your next lesson. Prepare for your next day. Prepare for the day after that etc. Ironing skills and fitness should be honed prior to you setting foot on Blamey Barracks. I have follow up information to complement this vid on my website: ashapplications.com.au. The ironing blog goes into more detail with sectionalized photos for DPCU/AMCU and polys. Hope this is helpful. Thanks for taking the time to comment; much appreciated. Regards Ash

Hello, do you have storage tips for uniforms while travelling. For example in a suitcase?

G'day Duncan, great question. I pack the suitcase and then place the uniforms on the very top. I place the poly dress uniforms in a suit holder to prevent contents from the suitcase marking them. The amount of abuse these Akubras can take, and still bounce back from, astonishes me! Thanks for posting this video; very instructive! I picked up an Akubra Slouch last week, but went with a non-traditional, open telescoped bash. I plan on replacing the factory puggaree with a wool hat band.

@Ashapplications11 ай бұрын
Good question. Fear not.....the damp cloth mitigates any burn marks. Use a medium setting on your steam iron and you will be fine. You really have to be doing something extreme to burn the hat. However, ensure the chinstrap is tucked well inside and is not laying under the ironed brim, otherwise it will shrivel. Hope this helps. Regards Ash

I bought black Versace belt with the gold Medusa in front. Had it 4 years now do you think I can take it somewhere so it at leaks looks 8/10 again?
@Ashapplications10 ай бұрын
G'day, apologies for the delayed response. A DYI option is to soak the gold part of the belt in a warm water and washing up liquid solution for approx. 15min then wipe clean. The belt can be refurbished as per the vid. Professional solutions would be a good jeweler for the gold and a leather/shoe restorer for the belt. Belts are quite easy to restore. Hope this helps. Let me know how you go. Regards Ash
