The problem is that you are comparing cowboy-style guitar with 4 chords and classical instrument like violin. But if we take a classical guitar or modern fingerstyle, which is even more diffucult and containing all classical stuff + percussion with steel strings? This is why violin seems anytime harder than guitar. People associate guitars with cowboy style in first place. But lets take all playing styles, which instrument allows you to do... Guitar allows you to be a band on one instrument, without any limits. I dont't say that violin is easy/hard/bad/good. Just wanted to bring up this very important point what people always forget to know about guitar. If they chose to play only 4 chords - its not the problem of an instrument.

What If I love both? I love the sound of the violin but I am a songwriter so I want to learn the guitar. Is it possible to learn two instruments at the same? Which instrument should I learn first?

Hi I am now 20years old. Is it too late to learn violin in this age? My parents are also poor. They want me to learn guitar instead of violin. I was into guitar too. But after I find the violinist playing the violin. I was soooo into it. Please can I get an advice from you.
@FreyaVal
@FreyaVal Ай бұрын
No you’re not late! You can still learn violin but my first advice is to rent a violin from a luthier (violin/strings instrument maker) rather than buying a cheap violin from Amazon, etc (a cheap violin from this kind of sites (amazon, etc) is unplayable and will discourage you from learning). If you rent a violin from a luthier you get the option to buy it later, and the advantage from renting is you don’t need to worry about the setup.

The guitar is the backup thing? ... Have you played jazz, blues, fusion, rock, folk, funk, pop, country music, reggae, rap, metal with a guitar or electric guitar, classical guitar, etc.? In many pieces and songs of this genre, the guitar is the main instrument. The guitar is more versatile; the guitar is not only a backup instrument. You can sing with a guitar, play other instruments while playing the guitar, for example, a foot drum, a harmonica, etc. There are more pieces and songs written on a guitar. You can do more things with a guitar, like Tommy Emmanuel, Tim Henson, classical guitarists, etc., and other non-backup guitarists. Guitar playing is not limited to four-chord songs. The guitar sounds more neutral; it can be the backup and the lead. But I must admit, violin is harder to learn. That's why the guitar is so popular; you can play easy pieces and very hard pieces. Some guitarists can even play rhythm and melody with a guitar while singing. In the end, play what you want; both are great instruments. I love the sound of the violin and the guitar.

I'm a beginner trying to teach myself (I get it. THE WORST way to do it. But the second worst way is to NEVER learn and these are my options). I thought my rosin was bad! It's all hard and brittle. So i bought a NEW one from Amazon that has 9,000 reviews and five stars. AND THAT is hard and brittle. No stickiness on my fingers, whether warmed by my hands or not. I watched a different video and it said to file the rosin, but it did NOT say to leave the powder on the rosin, (Is that right? I leave the powder on, right? PLEASE tell me if I've got it wrong!!!), and now after manhandling the rosin and powder, my fingers are sticky!! Like ROsin is!! So i'm optimistic that i"m closer to what it's supposed to be. But if I'm wrong, please please please correct me!!!

I would say that difficulty-wise, the guitar does start simpler, but the skill-cap for the guitar is absurdly high. Once you know the basics and you want to get really good, there's an almost infinite amount of techniques and styles that you can try to master. Playing the blues? Easy. Playing Eric Johnson with shredding 16ths triplets all across the neck with perfect pick motion? Monstrously difficult. Want to play metal? At some point you may want to master fast and regular downpicking, muting and releasing, perfect-pitch bending on one or multiple strings, being able to switch from fast-chugging to shredding a melody line in phrygian dominant#7, and back to chugging, all in 7/8 polyrythm and alternate tuning. All while adding tapping, harmonics, pinch harmonics, and managing your pedal effects. So yes, violin is a difficult instrument, but you can absolutely make the guitar a monster of difficulty if you want to.

Because I want a portable piano, I went with guitar. I see artists like Ichika, Marcin, and others who play pieces like Bach Two Part inventions, Turkish March, etc... on the guitar. That is they play all the voices on one instrument with advanced techniques like two hand finger tapping, so they don't need accompaniment. And I see artists like Tommy Emmanuel who play the guitar with percussive elements, melody and bass without the need for any other accompaniment. And I saw videos of Ted Greene improvise a real-time in the style of Bach! He just makes up melody and bass line on the fly! They make it seem so easy. How much guitar practice does it take to reach their level?

Thank-you, I love your videos, VERY helpful! Just found your channel yesterday, I'm about 6 months into learning fiddle as an adult. For equipment, another option (a lucky option in my case) is to look around locally in your area. I was able to purchase a new (albeit a 2006) Scherl and Roth violin/fiddle w/wood bow, rosin and case for $269 USD from an older gentleman who buys and sells and does repairs for the school system here. On line, these seem to cost $300 - $500 USD. I have an in-person teacher, and I noticed both of his bows are carbon fiber (very expensive because its his livelihood). I researched and decided to buy the Fiddlershop carbon fiber bow, and I love it! I also decided to try a carbon fiber (Carboni) bow w/synthetic hair (Zarelon), and actually, I love that bow too! For the shoulder rest, I also have a prominent collar bone and a long neck, and while the Kun standard does work for me, I prefer the custom fit of the Bonmusica. For chin rest, after trying 4 of them, I prefer the side mounted Dresden style from the Violin Woodworker Shop. My teacher recommended Helicore strings, so I bought those as my fiddle came w/Preludes. The Helicores are MUCH more responsive! And I changed the bridge from a medium height to an ultra-low height, this lowered the strings making the instrument easier to play (for me). Thank-you again, your sound sounded great even when you first started!!! Oh, and I also spend a lot of time w/FiddleHed! All the best to you 🙂

Don't forget about the Mandolin. Its tuned just like the Violin/Fiddle. If you learn to play the Fiddle, one could easily "pick" out the same tune on the Mandolin. Another interesting thing about the Violin/Fiddle and Mandolin is the strings GDAE are the lowest 4 strings on the guitar flipped (EADG-BE)

I have been trying to play the guitar for years and have finally come to the realization that I just don't have the finger dexterity to play all the notes. I have seen a lot of people here on KZbin saying it's easy to learn to play the guitar, anyone can, I'm afraid I have to disagree, for some that might be true, but not for everyone. Now I have given up trying to learn completely and put my time towards things I can do or am capable of learning.
