Thank you, Claudia. You understand completely some years are just hard. Still worth it to garden for the benefits of gardening even in the imperfect. I love that you have a similar enough climate where you are to have long growing seasons. I would love to visit that part of the country someday.

While you are planting onions this is a good time to ask . The green onions we use to be able to get on a salad in restaurants. What is a good kind to plant. We eat more onions and potatoes than we eat anything else. All tho I am on the East Coast. I use to drive a truck an I came to California every week . Thanks
@scofieldfarm19 күн бұрын
Bunching onions!! They grow great- they used to be the only onions I grew. Another cool trick is if you have an abundance of bulb onion starts, you can plant some really close together and then just harvest them as bunching onions. We did that one year when we had way too many onion starts and that worked great too!

Do you use the echinacea for colds or flu? Do you use some plants or rosemary for tinctures hear it's good for ya too!,having ulcer issues and hate to do meds to many side effects, praying it's not pancreatis!
@scofieldfarmАй бұрын
I do use the echinacea to make a tea when people aren’t feeling well and we add our own honey to it. I haven’t divided the roots yet, which is the most potent of the health benefits for echinacea. We have a lot of rosemary- I haven’t used it much medicinally, but I agree that avoiding medications when possible helps because side effects can be a lot! I also have quite a few allergies to medications.

Good morning. I grow in zone 8b in Aurora, Oregon, 45th parallel, elevation of 168. My soil is dense clay so I have to plant Russian Red Hardneck Garlic in a raised bed to avoid rot. For my climate I'm able to plant the last week of September and I harvest the second week of July. This ensures the largest bulb size and great storage. Garlic is one of the easiest crops to grow and its very forgiving. So plant it any time from the end of September to the first week of April. Typically the later you plant it the smaller the bulb will grow. But it all tastes good and any crop is better than no crop.
@scofieldfarmАй бұрын
I love that you added this info here! Every place is so different and that I why I love to hear from people in the comments because feedback from other areas is so helpful. Our little area is still 105+ in September, so not a good time to plant for us til temps start to mellow out a little bit, but very true that there is a wide window of planting time for garlic, just may affect size, like you said, if it is planted later (and I am sure some very low zones there is a cut off because of ground freezing, but neight you nor I deal with that thankfully). I always appreciate you chiming in with your experience and I hope your garlic harvest this next July is great!

@7:09 not sure what memes you are seeing, but I don't think it's a joke to collaborate with your community when it comes to protecting yourself in hard times. If my neighbour does nothing but wait for handouts, sorry, I will share my food with someone who can fix my tractor or can hunt. Just my humble opinion... thanks for dharing

The meme has floated around for years about ranking friends based on what they do for me and it is meant to be funny. Thanks for your comment. I think you misunderstand what I am saying, but that is okay. I am all for trade and bartering and community sufficiency vs self sufficiency. I am talking about calamity like this recent hurricane, and loving my neighbor and not expecting anything in return. We had a massive wildfires come into the small city I live by and burn down over 1100 homes and kill 5 people. I am not asking my neighbor whose house and possessions all burned to the ground what they will trade me if I help them… my house didn’t burn down but so many friends’ homes did. I also have a beautiful hope that God takes care of those who are willing to care for those who cannot repay. He has been so kind to my family, I know He will take care of us when we aren’t just “me” focused - I have seem Him do it over and over again. Thanks again for your comment and you are always free to see things differently and disagree - I appreciate you being here and taking the time to offer your thoughts.

Im all for citrus in containers. After all, I’m in Zone 5b, Canada. But in your case, I suggest you use open bottom raised beds, 1.4’ heigh. You can control the soil mix, pH, fertilizer, and watering. I did this for my blueberry plants since my native soil is not acidic enough. Hope this helps.
@scofieldfarm3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tips! I actually want to specifically move my blueberries into these because they have struggled and been stunted in growing straight in the ground, no matter how much we have amended it and tried to feed them acid loving plant food. Great idea on the citrus as well for when I put that grapefruit into the ground… a smaller raised bed with hardware cloth underneath would help keep the great amended soil with the correct PH but give room for it to really thrive when I wants to get huge. Love your comments when you leave them!
@SamMTL5143 ай бұрын
@@scofieldfarm blueberry thrive in pH 4.5 to 5.5. Acid loving plants fertilizer is not effective if your native soil pH around 7. You are fighting the mineral in your soil. It’s losing battle.
@SamMTL5143 ай бұрын
For my blueberry raised bed, I used a potting soil (not garden soil) with pH 5 to 6. It’s mostly made with peat-moss. I amended it with sulphur and compost. There is another hack/ trick to lower pH significantly. Ammonium-based fertilizers have the greatest potential to acidify soil. Scott’s lawn fertilizer uses Ammonium based nitrogen.
@scofieldfarm3 ай бұрын
Thank you! Great advice! I know pH has to be my blueberries’ problem and look forward to fixing it and getting more blueberries than just feeding the wild quail.
