Watching Dobbins and Fennessey, and to a lesser extent, Ryan, making light of someone's demons is nothing short of cruel. Maybe it's because I work in mental health, but as I listen to the three of them talk about Andrew McCarthy's documentary it comes across as less of a criticism of the documentary and more as an opportunity to poke fun at someone so they can feel better about themselves. Any criticisms they had of McCarthy's attempt to better understand something that has clearly impacted him was far more cringeworthy than anything in the documentary. Regarding McCarthy, his struggles with alcoholism are something he has spoken of publicly and is mentioned in his book, Brat: An 80s Story. He hardly addresses this in the documentary, which I did find interesting. Alcoholism had a far greater impact on his career struggles than the David Blum article ever did and it's a glaring blind spot in the documentary. When McCarthy makes the rather bold choice to speak directly to Blum himself, he's almost looking for Blum to say something kind and reparative that would in some way relieve McCarthy of the pain he is holding. What may be more effective for McCarthy is to forgive himself for how he allowed the article to impact him and for decisions he made that led to his career struggles. Like Rob, Demi, and Emilio all said, the article only has as much power as you're willing to give it. McCarthy's emotions about himself are being displaced onto the Blum article and I applaud Blum for holding his ground and being honest. I also applaud McCarthy for putting himself out there and being vulnerable with the documentary. It definitely felt like a therapeutic journey to better understand his shadow.

I can normally deal with Amanda shrugging off generationally beloved movies; but her shrugging off both LOTR and Spirited Away and then going into excruciating detail about bottom of the barrel, reactionary romcoms was rough.

In The Breakfast Club the overall idea is that labels and stereotypes shouldn't define people. In high school there are plenty of people who get labels and it's rarely a good thing, but it also scrapes away all of the shades of grey that make people complex. We all like to think that we become so evolved after high school but it's not really true. Just like all of the stereotype labels the characters in the movie were trying to escape, this article comes along and both lumps them all together under a catchy but derogatory label and attempts to paint them as undercooked actors who were not worthy of the attention they were receiving. This documentary for all of weaker aspects, is essentially the best way McCarthy had to set the record straight. An article wouldn't get the same buzz or enough people to read it like Blum's article did back then. But a documentary on Hulu was the 21st century version of that. It allowed them to say what they wanted. They can't go back and change anything, but at least it allowed them to show just how damaging that was for all of them back them and find a way to set the record straight. This unflattering article and the catchy name they all got tagged with killed much of the forward momentum they were all experiencing at that time and momentum in an actors career when they are young is hard to get back. We can't know what their careers would have looked like had the article not existed and it's possible it wouldn't look all that different than what happened, but it certainly did them no favors. What McCarthy seems to struggle with the most is the lack of agency back then and how their possible futures were ripped away.

As a huge Burt reynolds fan. Smokey and the bandit is his peak and the best movie. Needs a rewarchable apparently. Also only one football movie I can rewatch at this point and I’ve seen them all. Best of times. Starring Kurt Russell and robin williams. Rewatch that one.

Amanda’s story about the soap at 35:00 is just insane. For one, electronic sinks work 99% of the time. Second, why would you use soap first? Soap goes on easier if your hands are wet.

I read Andrew’s book & he comes across to me as insecure and not very confident in himself. If he didn’t have the career he wanted it’s not because of the brat pack association. I believe it’s because of him and how he sees himself. He’s older now & looking back and maybe regretting his lack of confidence back then & trying to blame someone else. Demi Moore was once the highest paid actress in Hollywood post her brat pack years & Rob Lowe overcame a huge scandal and has worked continuously to this day.

You guys are a bit too hard on McCarthy. He seems like a nice guy to me and also a decent actor and director. It's actually not difficult to get his point with the Brat Pack thing, nothing strange about his documentary.

What is being missed? In the movie Greece, John Travolta, Olivia Newton. John and all of the cast, we're well past being teenagers. Adults In were always cast as teenages then in the early 80s, actual teenagers started being cast in movies. This group, the brat pack. We're all excellent actors and we're trusted so much so that the director of the movie, let them choose their own clothing. Write some of their own lines, create part of their own character. Today's generation is not understanding. that young teenage actors were being used for the first time and were not just being used, but Were driving the industry at the time. This was shocking to many people. This KZbin video. Does not understand because you weren't part of it. You're not able to understand because you're outside of it. The documentary itself was brilliant. I Liked every moment of it. The original article was written about just the three guys.. But then another article came out. Writing about the John Hughes movie actors. Take away all social media and think that there were only five tv stations on your TV. Word of mouth amongst your friends and maybe a monthly magazine article was all we had. If some thing negative was written you had little chance to defend yourself. Being typecast was dooming to many careers.

Really enjoyed the episode and absolutely adore Breaking Away. I think Dave is delightful and extremely cute especially when he is pretending to be italian. I am a cyclist (not in LA!!!!) and I find the cycling element in this film totally believable and extremely well shot. Dave's bike is amazing. A great film, about growing up, finding out about who you are, friendship, sport, future....Everything you want in a sport/coming of age film.

Watching this again, the analysis of how the comedy is almost sneaky in its appearance is spot on. And the “blackspoitation” comment feels accurate but it isn’t. In reality this was a Sylvester Stallone movie who personally made the final selection of Judge Reinhold to be his co-star. Sly had enough cache to make a run at some edits of the screenplay and on the other end were very bloated action scenes that the studio didn’t want to pay for. As a result, Jeffrey Katzenberg slyly convinced (see what I did there) Stallone to not do BHC and do the movie Cobra instead. Insert Eddie Murphy and suddenly the movie needed to have the comic undertones based on its new leading man.

I found the accidentally and I’m so happy you guys talked about this. I felt the same way in a sense. I know the whole thing could come up before you before you did this documentary and I didn’t really understand the context of it in the sense of you know where he was really going with this. if you watch the documentary, you see that, basically there’s some kind of issue here that he obviously has like this bitterness is the right word but just something goingon. it just doesn’t make any sense and I totally agree with that last comment is that without talking to Jud Nelson I really don’t understand what the point of this was becausewithout Jud Nelson really like everybody else is just in such a different place so anyways yeah no good stuff really interesting. I thought maybe I was just missing the point, but I got from exactly what you guys pretty much got from it.
