Agree with Sean's point about "Hyperion" being an untapped IP - it's one of the remaining iconic literary sci-fi series belonging to the same category as "Dune" that has a lot of gravitas when treated with respect and could become the next big franchise with the right director & screenplay writer. Personally though, I think it's much better served as a high-budget prestige TV series given how heavy it's themes are.

It might be just be to my interests but I'm reading an interesting book called Roadshow: The Fall of film musicals in the 1960s. The first chapter is about how Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music were all massive successes that came within 6 months of each other. The rest of book details the making of all the big budget musical (mostly) disasters that were made to capitalize on the success of those three.

Sean's "Wonka Sucks, Ambulance Rocks!" take is his wildest form cognitive dissonance, and I have a ton of faith in his taste. One is made for actual children (and they LOVE it) and the other is made for adult male children (and they LOVE it). 1 coin, 2 sides.

The Crazy Rich Asians series and My Year of Rest and Relaxation were absolute bombshell picks in literary properties. Personally would’ve shot for a sci-fi adptation for a Ursula K. Le Guin or an Octavia Butler, or honestly-though I hate it-A Little Life, just because I can’t think of another novel that has had a greater general impact in the reading public in the last decade. Oh, and Bad Art Friend absolutely should be adapted by way of R.F. Kuang’s Yellowface.
@jurassicmark_468818 күн бұрын
The Secret History would be a really hard novel to film. Possibly the least of the problems (but one you would have to address) is that all the characters are loathsome. Also, there's not much plot, which works fine in literary fiction, but not so much on the screen. Much of the story takes place inside the mind of a first person narrative, so good luck with that. The bacchanal could easily come off as unintentionally funny. Casting would be a nightmare, as all 7 major characters are eccentric, but not in a funny, broad Umbrella Academy way. I think you would have to let Donna Tartt take the first stab at the screenplay, maybe with some help from her friend Brett Easton Ellis. On the screen it might fare better as a really nasty dark comedy.

Irrelevant aside but whu isnt Mary Poppins playing as a morming matinee (although I guess those are gone, but still there's room in the afternoom) at leasr 1x a month in every theatre? My son is 7 and we're almost 5 years in Mary Mania. When he was 3 we could've gone to a once a month screening. Let the lil uns dance and the grownups huddle in the back. If it came back right now in wide release we'd still happily pay $20 apiece.

The sad part is VOD is $19.99 or $24.99 to buy while the movie was $14 to see in theaters. Also some theaters have discounts on weekdays. This the VOD does not make financial sense, especially for an action movie that is better in the theater anyway. Just a thought.

This seems like a poor excuse to talk about the same 5 people you always talk about each week! Timothy Chalamet and Zendaya just don't do it for me on any level at this point (I haven't seen Challengers yet) but I don't think either are close to being movie stars let alone good actors.
