Thank you! but I think you're solving it in too complicated way ybar = y cos + z sin zbar = -y sin + z cos cos × yabr, -sin × zbar cos² + sin² = 1, so ybar cos - zbar sin = y I.S.W, ybar sin + zbar cos = z

thank you. Great mathematical and conceptual explanations. If you do consider doing 1.61... Griffiths added a part f in the new fifth edition that I'm using for my EM course. It is a quite tricky

I believe your reasoning for why k must be an integer has a defect. You say Phi(phi+2pi)=Phi(phi). All well and good; Phi is periodic. But When you consider Phi(kphi), kphi as a whole is the argument, and for Phi(kphi) to be periodic, all that is required is Phi(kphi+2pi), not Phi(kphi+2kpi). Of course, Phi(kphi+2kpi)=Phi(kphi) if k is an integer, but k is not REQUIRED to be an integer for Phi(kphi) to be periodic, since again, all that is required is for Phi(kphi+2pi)=Phi(kphi), in which case k can take on any value at all.

I have a few doubts. 1) Is it necessary as till now in Griffiths, I didn't deal with two systems and finding its potential value, must have the same reference points. What if they are not the same. Then would the superposition principle fail and we can't add the two potentials. 2) I am seriously not getting how you chose "a" to be the reference point as the reference point can be anything, say point P in yz plane (as finding potential in x-axis would be meaningless) except infinity for long wire?
@RitamRoy_
@RitamRoy_ Жыл бұрын
Yes, I too had the same question as you asked in the second point. I have an answer. I don't know whether it's fully correct. But I think it makes sense. So, the reference point can be anything. We generally assume it to be a point far away. There may exist two possibilities. 1. They chose 'a' as an arbitrary point. It has nothing to do with the distance of the wires from the origin. 2. They chose 'a', as the reference point can be anything. And at the end it doesn't affect the result. Any other reference point would have led us to the same result!
