Part of why this locomotive is so weirdly tall is that the locomotive for this set was more or less a modified version of a previously available model, the 999. Yes, Marx sold an HO locomotive with the same number on it as the classic diecast O gauge model! It was also sold with small battery powered Marx sets, and was the same apart from smaller domes, smokestack, and no big extra headlight. The loco can be found lettered with the New York Central oval herald and 999 on the cab, it also was made completely unlettered. These sets used the same plastic station/battery box to power them, but colored differently. I've been looking for one of these battery powered sets, they're pretty neat looking. Marx also made some sets with an 0-6-0, and with a version of their F2 that had a rubber band drive (the latter at least seems to have been exclusively for the european market). I think the 6096 hudson was the only steam locomotive Marx offered in HO that came with transformer powered sets.
@TomasTrains7

I have seen pics of the NY variant and I hope to get one, just waiting for one to be reasonably priced but yeah the molds are obviously related. I also have the F3, GP7 and Hudson, I’m going to make a vid about them eventually. Thanks for the very informed comment :) I hope you find what you’re looking for.

This was a 1960's promotional train set for the Green Giant brand vegetables and in the commercial the giant actually says, "Ho Ho Ho", in a very low voice during the short song with the wording as follows, (In the valley of the jolly Ho-Ho-Ho green Giant). I typed this before the end of the video where you relate your research on the train so in the words of Gilda Radner, "never Mind". lol; Great video, Jersey Bill

Interesting find, Tomas. Cool! It will be neat when cordless tool battery tech will fit in to HO scale or smaller. Like a 5 or 6 amp hour battery. Dead rail will open wide for smaller scales. Longer will we have to worry about dirty Track. Thanks for Sharing!

Thanks Russ, yes I agree. I believe once battery powered becomes more developed and prevalent it’d have the potential to phase out conventional pick up design in smaller scales. I’ve seen some videos of it being done, perhaps in the future I’ll try too.

This is an odd locomotive and your right about the pic-ups not being in the locomotive. The pic-up bogey in the tender can be removed by pushing off the cert-clip, (the C shaped spring clip), on the top connected to that brass peg you pointed out, so your guess was correct. That clip will shoot off so hold it down or you will be serching the floor. It was a very interesting video. Jersey Bill

It is a Radio... I believe that wire that goes the length of the chassis is the antenna. There was a time where you could get an AM or FM transmitter , set it to a frequency that matches the radio receiver ( in the boxcar) and basically broadcast sounds or whatever you wanted to the boxcar. A way to test this might be to see if you have any adjustment nobs, potentiometers, etc. and see if you can tune it to a radio station in your area.

Super. I bought a "foreign" locomotive once like this, not an "F" unit, when I was a kid in the Philippines with my dad, that had a drive like this and something of a generic boxcab look about it. I was young and only remember from my dad opening it up to clean and oil it. I do remember that it didn't like the rerailer track on my layout, and would thump over my switches. The controler was battery operated, and reminded me of an Erector set motor control, and I used it for a Lego motor control because I already had a train transformer, but the track fit right in on my layout. On the way back from the Philippines, the ship "lost" (?) our car, and the container our stuff was in, (How do you "lose" something out of a ship?) and probably had to pay my dad (Airforce) something. My parents got a new car, and I got a brand new Lionel HO steam locomotive train set with six cars and a caboose, which made me forget about the other train totally. Thanks for the memories, I was about eight at the time. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

Great Video. I really enjoy seeing how the Various Electric Train designs from Yester Year were put together. This is one I had not seen before. As for the Derail on Re-Railing track I wonder if the "Face Gear" or "Crown Gear" (On the Axle) is hitting the raised center area. I wouldn't think those big Flanges on the rear axle ALONE would do that. I WOULD guess that Loco would be a problem on Turnouts also. Nice Job getting it working again. I will definitely watch the Follow up Video. Cheers Steve

The shell of the F7A intrigued me. Judging by the 3 triangular dots on the nose, it appears to be a clone/copy of an old Globe shell. Globe F7A had this setup where the two bottom dots were the place where the number board attached to the shell since it was a separate piece. I don't know if this provides any valuable clues, but it may be a start.
@TomasTrains7
@TomasTrains7 4 ай бұрын
I’ll look at this later, thanks for the insight. I think all the shells are clones of athearn ones, I know the caboose is for sure a dead ringer for the old athearn pennsylvania caboose mold from the 60s, so it wouldn’t surprise if the loco is Globe (since Globe comes from Athearn). Thanks for watching 🙏

Very interesting locomotive to say the least. The shell looks to be a replacement Life-Like and the third rail contact on the tank is just mind boggling. The set may just be a one year run by some toy company that cashed in on Christmas here in the States like Trix or Matel. The Sakai guess is a good one, but we may never know. The drive gear on the truck rides up on the re-railer because it is as big as the wheels. Dame odd this. At any rate great video. Looking forward to the next.
