@@dougstroudphotography I went with a 3 3/8" GPS Speedometer from Speedhut for about 350$USD + their universal bracket and then you need to adapt it to the DR. There's many cheaper speedometers you can use, but I chose that one because it was one of the few that allowed me to have the mileage programmed to match the mileage of the bike. Otherwise you have to keep track of old and new mileage...really happy with it, but not cheap.

As you mentioned, I did the air cleaner, jetted the carb, and threw on an exhaust. That felt like it gave me 10hp (never got it on a dyno) and the brapp from the after market exhaust sounded so much better. I drove it to work as well as some fairly deep woods riding with my son on his YZ80 and never had an issue with it...Bought new in '07 and had it till '17. Was a fun bike!

I've not ridden since the early 80s (on a 70s TS250), but am looking at a dual sport for off-road 'touring', mostly BLM/forest roads. Love the simplicity of the DR650, but was surprised that it does not come with a tachometer. I used to pretty much ignore mph and IF i looked at anything, it was a tach. Possible to add aftermarket tach?
@Speedytrip

There's many otions for s tachometer on the DR but you don't really need one, it has most of its torque down low and power drops at the top so you'll know when to shift and its not like an inline 4 that needs to rev to the moon :)

I have a set of Kineo Wheels on my XR1200 Harley that are about 10 lbs lighter weight than the stock cast aluminum Harley wheels ...the front rim is 19 X 3.5 in wide... And the rear rim is 17 X 5.5 in wide.. I was also able to order the front wheel 1-in larger diameter.. And of course they decided to make the factory production twice as big as it was... So take me 8 months all together to get my wheels....but now if you order a set you get them in about 2 months and about $200 cheaper I got Kenda tubeless knobbies mounted on Kineo rims on my XR1200 ...about 4 inch wide on the front and about 7 inches wide on the rear . On dirt roads it will throw about a 20 ft tall roost at about 50 ft long off the rear knob at 90 to 100 ..it's crazy fun ... Just don't get caught by a sheriff deputy it's 30 mph out in the country roads

Biggest Negative for me is the tires I run don't come in tubeless type , useless to have tubeless rims if the tires I want to run need tubes . I also find a narrower front rim ( 1.6 ) handles better than the (1.85) stocker , so going wider again than the stock size would be a no go for me . Each to their own choices though .
@Speedytrip
@Speedytrip 3 ай бұрын
@@Oldfatbeerman Yes good point about the tires, you’ll want to shop tubeless tires to see if there’s something you like. You can also order an 18” rear wheel as some prefer that. The front tire size is the same as OEM even if rim is 1/4” wider and I can’t say I’ve felt any compromise at all. Thanks for. Watching!
@Oldfatbeerman
@Oldfatbeerman 3 ай бұрын
@@Speedytrip , With the rim width , it is all about front end feel , the wider the rim the larger/ wider the contact patch of the tire for the same same tire width due to the rim with flattening the radius of the tire , this increases the effort required to initiate a turn by the rider , more effort to turn = more tired muscles at the end of a big ride / miles each day , I just prefer a light feeling flickable steering bike , so narrow tires are ideal and narrow rims add to the package to give a narrow contact patch .

i'd rather just fix or change a tube. there's a few deal breakers there. the value for money, doesn't use the stock rear sprocket which they could've machined for, can assume it doesn't use the stock cush drive either, also not machined for stock speedo. another iffy thing is "never needs a spoke adjustment" i find it hard to believe those rims will never get out of true from offroad use and the way you true them is with the spokes. i'm also yet to see a new spoked wheel that doesn't need a spoke adjustment after settling in.
@Speedytrip
@Speedytrip 3 ай бұрын
I've changed tubes in hot weather, infested with mosquitoes and I would have given a kidney to have them tubeless hehe I've had many rides shortened by a flat tire (mine or a friends) and instead of riding you spend 45 minutes to an hour fixing a tube in the middle of nowhere, as opposed to plugging it in 10 minutes and being on your way. Out of all the flats I've had not once did I have a tubeless wheel and wished it was a tubed wheel. Every flat I had with tube type wheels, I wished they were tubeless. Tubeless rims with safety beads are also safer than the OEM wheels (I've had my rear tire almost unmount on my OEM rim cause it has no safety bead). Obviously these wheels are not for everyone, anything is always worth what it is worth to you, it's a lot of money, so you really need to want them. :) As for spokes not needing adjusting, seeing them in the flesh it's pretty clear why. The OEM rims without the spokes feel like they could be bent out of shape very easily by hand. The Kineo feel so robust that even if you removed all the spokes, the rims would be hard to bend out of shape. The spokes and spoke structure is light years ahead of the OEM wheels and provide so much more strength. It's almost a hybrid between a mag wheel and a spoked wheel. The sprocket and speedo gearbox are definitely things to consider $$. I just bought an extra sprocket from them while I was at it so I won't have to think of it for a few years, as a bonus the sprockets are really nice and lite. Thanks for watching :)

@@Speedytrip i've never taken 45 minutes to change a tube in my life. also flat tyres just aren't that common in reality. you'd be silly if you didn't run a rim lock on a tubed tyre you absolutely need to be able to air down offroad. you'll also be putting a tube in if your tyre has a split so a quick easy plug only works with the right kind of puncture. 30+yrs of mostly offroad riding and i could count on one hand the punctures i've had. if you get that tyre pressure down so the tyre can mould around sharp objects you reduce the risk of puncture exponentially.

Those are gorgeous wheels. I really do love the contrast of the proven stone simple/reliable and yet fully modded DR with inverted forks too. That is a very cool bike you have there. Cheapskates can make the stock rims tubeless by sealing the spokes with marine caulk, and taping the drop center with 3M tape, there are plenty of videos on YT on how to do this, I have successfully done it myself. It sounds totally cheesy but if you do it correctly it works great. A problem with tubeless tires on a bike that sees off road is not having a rim lock, which precludes dropping the tire pressure too much. Even full non DOT knobs are going to be skatey when off road if inflated to over 15 PSI, and the rear is at risk of spinning if run that low. Also, you are screwed if you get a flat and the bead comes off the rim, as you really need an air compressor's volume and maybe even a tiedown/strap to pop it back on again. The way around all that is to simply run a TuBliss system, which includes a rim lock. TuBliss is not DOT road approved, but my 701 has seen thousands of freeway miles with no issue. I carry a quality compact double action bike pump and when going off road drop my front tire down to around 14 PSI (the TuBliss stiffens the sidewall) and then pump it back up to 22 PSI for riding home on the road. Dropping the pressure allows DOT legal dual sport tires to grip well in the dry decomposed granite and rocks I ride in here in Colorado. Used spoke weights to balance for the rimlock, speed tested to, um, I'm not going to say 😆
@Speedytrip
@Speedytrip 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the compliments on the bike (though I still have the standard forks, I just added gators to better protect the seals)! I've read a lot of good things about the Tubliss system but the fact that is not DOT for road use ruled it out for me (though I'm sure it's pretty safe). As for the tubeless wheels coming off the rim, there's safety beads (which the OEMs don't have) that helps keep the tire in place in case of a deflation (with the OEM rim I actually had my rear tire almost come off while riding, glad it wasn't the front tire!). As mentioned in the video, someone always riding at very low PSI is better off keeping a tube, or using a Tubliss system or even a mousse if you don't ride on the highway. With that said, out of the 400000km I've ridden on over 150 different bikes, in nearly 10 flat tires, I haven't once have a flat tire with a tubeless wheel and wished it had a tube. And every single flat I had with a tube, I wished it was tubeless :) Thing is you can repair a tubeless tire with a tube if needed, but in my experience, all flats could be repaired with a plug in under 10 minutes. I keep a tiny battery compressor on the bike that I keep in the little Plasticase I have on the back along with CO2 cartridges and plugs. Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience!

@@Speedytrip 100%, so much easier to repair a tubeless tire. The concern with the TuBliss system is if that high pressure bladder ruptures it creates a tough situation. The high pressure bladder is well protected but Murphy's law being what it is... Have used TuBliss on my dirt bike for years with good results, installing it correctly is the key. I really do love those sweet wheels and have an affinity for the big DR as it can be greatly improved with mods, there are some really nicely modded ones out there, and I'm a modaholic 😆
