@slantfish65sd Күн бұрын
Hello Robert, first of all let me say thank you very much for watching the video and thank you for your comments. As for your comment, can you simply install three 40 heads and intake or does the compression drop okay? Yes, you can install the 340 heads and the intake typically most of the time when we're talking stock 318 bottom end. Pistons block crank rods. All of that and 340 heads put on a 318 usually will result in a compression drop. However, there are several items that can play into that now. If the particular heads you've got in mind have a smaller combustion chamber, whether that's been done by milling the heads down or their aftermarket heads and they had a smaller combustion chamber to begin with. That's something to think about. The combustion chamber size is important. There are books out there and there is information online that tells you how big that combustion chamber will be. Roughly how big it'll be according to the casting number and different casting numbers can have different combustion chamber sizes. Some smaller, some larger now also too. Something that plays into this is the bore size of that 318. If that bore has been altered like it's been bored out some that can play into that that can have an effect if the block has been decked, meaning the the deck of the block where the cylinder head bolts on. If that's been milled down that can have an effect on the compression as well. And also the depth that the Piston sets in the bore if it's 5,000 of an inch down in the bore then that's going to be better than it's sitting 120,000s down in the bore or if it's zero deck, meaning the Piston as is zero flush with the top of the deck. Another thing that can play really importantly into this is the camshaft the amount of overlap it has in degrees of crankshaft rotation. So say if a camshaft has three degrees of overlap then it's not going to have very much overlap and it's not going to make much effect on your static compression ratio. Now, if you get a cam that has more overlap a lot of your performance camshafts do then that can affect compression ratio even more and can bleed off more compression. However, let's keep something in mind. The flow capabilities of your average 340 head is going far exceed the the limitations of the lower compression. So yes the compression will drop but your flow capabilities will go up tremendous amount and if you want to retain some of that compression then you need to be looking at thinner head gaskets but before you start buying anything you need to be measuring and checking things out. So start getting out the calipers and start looking at everything. Start checking things out and start doing a little math. There are websites where you can upload all of these numbers like the thickness of your head gasket when it is compressed your combustion chamber size, your depth of your piston and the bore. The bore size everything and they'll tell you what your compression ratio will be with a given head. It's very informative and it's very helpful. The 360 that I built has a compression ratio of 8.996.1 and yes, the head's got milled down but if it were my engine, I would be looking at getting more air flow instead of being terribly concerned about your compression ratio. Pressure ratio is very important but air flow is really important. Even more important. Furthermore, you need to be checking if the valves on the 340 heads will clear the bore of your 318, especially if the engine hasn't been bored at all. If it's stock more, you need to check and make sure that the valves can open and close without there being any kind of interference. Usually there isn't usually but on a stock. Bore 318 340 heads the valves tend to get shrouded by the cylinder wall so you lose a little bit of flow there I know that was long-winded but there's a whole lot of ground to cover when you start talking about compression ratios and you start talking about cylinder heads and everything like that. Your idea isn't bad. It's actually a really good idea. It's just there's a lot of details you got to cover. Thank you again. If there's anything else you need let me know

Probably close to a year now. I hope it has been sold to somebody else that particular salvage yard does like to sell stuff instead of scrapping it. And like I said, I hope somebody has bought it and is in the process of at least putting it back on the road or possibly restoring it. Here's the problem with restoring any vehicle. It's really super expensive especially today. It stuff is just sometimes tripled or even quadrupled in in price. I mean stuff like paint just the paint paint. Something is ridiculous anymore. It's just gotten so crazy anymore. Just trying and restore anything. People see my cars and my trucks in there like oh you need to restore that and they don't think about what it cost. And then not only that if you turn it over to a shop somebody else to restore it. The labor Ray is just astron and amical. It is just insane. What car can I look for that 360 manifold off of?
@slantfish65sd
@slantfish65sd 9 күн бұрын
That intake manifold you're referring to, you can find it on pickup trucks especially 1 ton d350 dually pickup trucks. Also fans especially the b350 also any cop cars? The cop cars came with that manifold and they had that manifold on the 360s and then there was some cop cars with 318 that also had that manifold then of course there's also just any rear-wheel drive. V8 Mopar anytime I go into a salvage yard I just look at most any of them that I know is going to be V8 rear-wheel drive and carbureted. So just look for any Dodge truck from or van or rear-wheel drive cars from Year model 88 and back and You should be able to find a manifold. Also Facebook marketplace. I've seen a few floating around on there and eBay

The best mods for first gen 4x4s is an earlier model reverse rotation steering gearbox. Eliminates bump steer and is a must for lifted trucks with bigger tires. Durango mini starter motor is great too, turns over faster , saves weight and has more room if you're running headers. Ive grabbed several for 15 bucks at the wrecking yard. They bolt right up with no mods both big and small blocks.

Thank you for watching the video and thank you for your comments. Yeah, this video was centered around the two-wheel drive trucks and while there is some of these modifications, we'll work on either two or four-wheel drive the reverse rotation steering gear box. I've never even heard of that but there again I don't do a whole lot with four-wheel drives but sounds cool anyway. And the mini starters. Yeah that's always a great idea. You got to be careful though with some of them that that rounded piece on the nose of the starter that goes into the bell housing. Some of those are different sizes and they won't work with your bell housing. So just something to be careful about. But yes, the mini Mopar mini starter is a great idea and they are proven and saves about 7 lb

@slantfish65sd
@slantfish65sd 17 күн бұрын
First of all, I want to say thank you very much for watching the video and thank you for your comments. To answer your question very briefly, yes, all of these items will apply to the 3/4 and 1 ton Dodge trucks d250 and d350 now. However, I'm referring to the two-wheel drive whenever somebody says d150 d250d350 that's two-wheel drive now if we're talking four-wheel drive a lot of these same tricks work, but you have to keep in mind four-wheel drive. You got a solid axle up front so some of these ideas won't work or some of these ideas. You may not be applying to your vehicle like the sway bar however, a lot of Dodge trucks are a four-wheel drive. Came with a front sway bar but not all of them. Also, something else to keep in mind is that most likely and why I'm saying most likely is I don't have a 1-ton Dodge here to measure from. As far as the frame rail height, the half ton the frame rail is going to be not as tall. The 3/4 ton and wontons are going to be taller most likely so that will mean that those braces in the front that run from The cross member that runs underneath the radiator to the frame rails in front of the engine cross member. Those braces that I showed in the video. They will probably have to be shorter now. However, do keep in mind that I will be redoing this video. I'm not entirely happy with it. I think the videography could be a little bit better and the camera I was using was filming it backwards. So all of the images and video is flipped. That's why it looks like I have a right hand drive truck when I don't. And also too I will be making a video about making these braces so that's coming up pretty soon as well. All right? Thank you very much for watching and if you have any further questions feel free to ask

@slantfish65sd
@slantfish65sd 18 күн бұрын
First of all, let me say thank you very much for watching the video and thank you for your comments. As to your question, shouldn't the engine be warmed up first? That's kind of an either or question really. It should be both test. It warmed up and tested cold, but as long as you're testing it cold and getting some readings you know and the readings are pretty good. Generally when they're warmed up they're probably going to be pretty good too. Unfortunately, this engine had a head gasket issue and I was not able to get it warmed up and get it hotter. However, with the fact that it does have good depression, even when it's cold, I'm going to assume that the compression's going to be even better because when the engine warms up, things like piston rings expand things like well. Anything metal is going to expand. Of course the cylinder bores will expand, but so will the piston rings now whether the cylinder boards expand, you know outward away from the Piston or will they expand and contract onto the Piston? Really good question. I'm going to say they're probably going to expand and contract on the piston a little bit, but that's just my guess. Anyway, thank you very much for watching and if you have any further questions feel free to ask

Yes the cats are very useful to keep around just to keep the mice scared and keep them away and out of the vehicles. But they make for really great companions too. That one in the video he does a lot of hunting and every so often in the yard or on our porch or on our steps. We will find some dead animals that he's taken down as a as an example. This is kind of funny but one evening it was very light and I heard in the distance I heard a fox squalling making its noises. I live in a really rural area and I look around and I don't see my cat Oliver anywhere. That's the cat in the video and I'm thinking oh God he's doing it. He's hunting a fox and I hear this thrashing about in like some shrubs or woods or underbrush in the distance and I hear it a couple more times and I hear the fox squalling and carrying on. Then all of a sudden here comes My cat running towards the house runs up on the porch. The fox is chasing him so I think what happened was he was trying to catch the fox. The fox was as big as him and then the fox started chasing him. The fox got the upper hand and started chasing him. Yeah it's it was kind of fun. Fortunately he wasn't hurt and he's just fine. Hopefully he'll stick to the stuff. It's a little bit smaller than him

As for the braces that are in the front or the frame of my d150, I will make a video about that showing a little more detail about them and show him how to do it. It's really, really simple. They're not very hard to do. Probably what I'm going to do is just show the braces in greater detail and talk more about how to do that at home with just like a drill and a grinder and maybe a hacksaw or an angle grinder with a cut off wheel and I may do a video series showing how to do that. I will be working on an 83 d1150 and getting it going and getting it on the drag strip. So I thank you very much and if you have any further questions feel free to ask

Hey first of all let me say thank you very much for watching the video and thank you for your comment. As for what's wrong with your Mopar most likely you've probably got yourself a bad ignition switch. What's happened? Most likely is that you have a contact in the ignition switch that has burned out or what's known as called commonly dropped a lag. This contact is no longer making contact and that contact is one of the circuits you've got basically two circuits in your Mopar there's an ignition one and an ignition 2. Ignition one allows the engine to run all the time while the ignition is turned on. Ignition two allows the ignition coil to have full 12 volt power when the engine is starting. That ignition one is probably messed up in the ignition switch. Try a different ignition switch or try jumping across your ignition relay. Switch under the hood and see if you can get it to start like that. Okay. Thank you very much. If you have any further questions feel free to ask

Thank you very much for watching the video and thank you for your comment. Yes, safety is really important. It's often one of those things that can be come have any slack attitude about it but reality is it really sucks when you get something in your eye. It really stinks you have to stop what you're doing and go to the emergency room and get it out. And then you got an emergency room visit to pay for and where you have to stop and flush something out of your eye myself. I've always been pretty good about using safety gear and usually buying the safety gear is cheaper than going and making an emergency room visit

So i was working on my truck (exact same as one in video) and while i ran to the parts store for grease my brother decides that he would help me by taking off my control arms but did not mark the bolts location how do i make sure its in the correct position? Is there anyway to measure off some sort of benchmark?
@slantfish65sd
@slantfish65sd Ай бұрын
Thank you so much for watching the video and thank you for your comments. As for your issue of where the bolts go if you have the bolts there in front of you then I would take the bolt that you think would hold the control arms on and try it in the bolt holes and see if it's the right fit or is it too loose as long as it's a close fit then it should be just fine. I would not worry about this too much. This is a common issue that a lot of professional mechanics face a tip to avoid this problem in the future. Just take yourself some pictures

Hi, @slantfish garage, that's a DM 800. They had a longer hood and there a longer BBC than the DM 600; the DM 600 came in a shorter hood than the DM 800 and Mack offered an even shorter hood DM 600 than the standard DM 600, but they were not axle set back as this DM 800 is, if I'm correct. It's a pity this rig sits there, but it's quite restorable. The DM 800's had the standard Mack ENDT 672, optional ENDT 865 and Cummins NHC 250. It's possible to have the Cummins NHC 250 in a short hood DM 600 but some of the block would need to come into the cab with an inside cover for the back side of the Cummins 855 CID block as the Cummins N14 series engines were 6 in longer than the Mack ENDT 672 engines. I once saw a very short hood Mack U600 which actually had a Cummins NHC 250 in it, a **really rare sight**, I spotted that truck as it slowly passed me, before Broad Ave., it was near Fairview, NJ as I was heading south to Beyer Bros., a GMC/Autocar/Oshkosh truck dealership, also in Fairview, NJ in around year 2001.

Thank you for watching the video and thank you for the little short story. The truck in question is no longer sitting there. I've been a little bit afraid to even ask what happened to it, finding out that maybe it got crushed or cut up or something like that. I hope it didn't. I hope it got restored but anyway the bad part is I'm not that up on the Mack trucks. There was a lot of them at one time running the highways and the roads around here. Hauling lots and lots and lots of coal. I think I mentioned this in the video. Also, I mentioned in the video that there is a coal-fired power plant less than probably about 6 or 7 mi from there. So really kind of ironic. I wanted to capture this truck in the video okay because I don't see them like this anymore. When I was a child in the '80s these trucks were still running the roads. Now they're just a ghost A memory thanks to the EPA but that's another story. Also, thank you for all the information

Another KZbinr is not a big fan of headers. He says for near exclusive use on the track, yes. If mostly street use, 340/360 exhaust manifolds will do a marvelous job.
@slantfish65sd
@slantfish65sd Ай бұрын
True the 340 exhaust manifolds are really really good pieces. Rivaling some headers, however, have you priced them lately? Oh my God not exactly cheap although none of this stuff is cheap. But yeah, if it's got Mopar 340 attached to it you can just about bet it's going to be expensive. So while the 340 manifolds do flow very well, I'm probably just going to use headers myself. But also the Magnum exhaust manifolds Day flow pretty good too. Way better than the stock manifolds. I don't think they're as good as the 340 manifolds, but as far as flow capability, as far as Magnum manifolds are concerned, the ones to really have are the 92-93 model exhaust manifolds. They have a bigger outlet than the 94 and later exhaust manifolds

Spot on. Especially the part of using an o2 sensor gauge for tuning. I really want to install 1. My dad and I set up my 318 charger when I was a kid. Long tube hooked headers, 2.5 dual pipes, wiend medium rise intake, edelbrock 600, stock cam. A cam and an ignition system is all that's left to do.

Thanks for that information. On my 1986 flat lifter 318 I have noticed that the rocker arms are marked rh and lh. It seems that that indicates how they are assembled as the rh and lh are paired together.

First of all, I want to say thank you very much for watching and thank you for your comment as to your comment about the rock arms marked RH in LH that is not always how they are assembled so don't always take that as the gospel. Sometimes they are assembled that way. Sometimes they are not
