Love your content and your smarts! I have a question you might be able to figure out or already know. I have acquired a Tandy 1000 external 5.25" floppy drive and intended to remove the drive to install into a CoCo floppy case. But now I'm re-thinking this approach and maybe come up with a way to use this drive AS-IS with some adapter cables/devices. Already I have found the external drive connectors on the Tandy 1000 ex/hx are really different from standard. For starters, they are 30 pin rather than 34 and instead of the odd numbered pins being ground, some are 5V, ground and 12V. SO! That would require some special things to make work. I have been able to find the pinouts for the INTERNAL drives in the 1000 ex/hx (they are 34 pin) and the standard 34 pin card edge connector on the internet. But I haven't found the specific pinout mappings for the 30 pin external drive connectors. Could you help? I'd like to be able to create a board to install into the CoCo floppy drive case where the molex 4 pin power connector can connect to the board. The power lines would map to the appropriate pins for a 30 pin card edge cable which would then connect to the Tandy 1000 external floppy case. In my head it is "simple" but I don't know how to KiCAD at all.

Thanks for the compliments on the channel! It’s fun to do these videos…even more fun when people like them. As to your external drive, I haven’t come across any service doc for them in my travels. I do see them mentioned in Tandy’s Notes and Jumpers (you can find these on the TRS-80 Model II Archie on GitHub repository in the Hardware/Notes and Jumpers folder). I don’t think you’ll find pinouts there, but you might get some clues. Good luck! github.com/pski/model2archive

@@TJBChris I took good quality images of both sides of the Tandy30pin to standard 34 pin floppy card edge adapter board within the external drive enclosure. Using a reference describing the 34 pin standard (one side is ground the other side is all signals) I was able to visually trace back each pin from the 34 pins to the Tandy30pin arrangement which integrates 12V, 5V, Ground and signals. I'd be happy to share the results with you if you like? I did it all in Inkscape as that tool suits my experience level best for now. I suppose I could compile a table simply breaking out the connection pin translations but that doesn't tell the whole story.

I really want to get my hands on a DEC VT-220, and I'm still trying to find information on the terminals used in Radio Shack stores which looked like they were in Tandy PC cases with no drives of course, and I still think they were WS xxxx if my 4th/5th grade memory is correct. 3. 23:11 love some of your creative file names ;)

For a short time I was obsessed with the Agvision, Model 16, multiplexor box and the videotex experiment they did with the local newspaper there in TX. Interesting to note there was an option to download a binary image to run on the remote terminal from the videotex host. I guess maybe this would have made it possible to run some text based games via modem download.
@TJBChris
@TJBChris 14 күн бұрын
I think that was possible - running 6809-based code on the Videotex. I always wanted a Videotex terminal...of course, it's one of the many things I passed on when they were all over eBay for low prices because I "already had too much". That was about 15 computers ago. :) I would like to play with the VIS software for the 16, which powered some online services that used those systems, but it's way down the list at this point.

@TJBChris
@TJBChris Ай бұрын
Unfortunately, I'm not sure off-hand. I haven't used these systems with a monitor newer than about 2004 (a Dell LCD). That said, the only thing I can think to check is the jumper or switch to enable the on-board VGA. Most Tandy systems of this era let you enable or disable on-board video, so if it was disabled, you might get your issue. Beyond that, if there's expansion video RAM, it might be worth making sure it's socketed correctly. Tandy Notes and Jumpers will have some detail that might help. Thanks for watching! github.com/pski/model2archive/blob/master/Hardware/Notes%20and%20Jumpers/Notes_and_Jumpers_Sep_1993_Text.pdf

@@TJBChris I had installed the 256kb video ram, and that appears to had crashed the built in video card. After removing them back to stock, it works. But seems that my four 1mb ram sticks do not work. Not sure if I have to do a setup utility, but I doubt that is the problem. My other problem is finding a 3 1/2 drive that has S0 settings to replace the Tandy floppy drive. Those are notoriously unavailable. I had to modify the tandy Floppy cable by cutting various grounds in the cable (found the modifications online), but a stock 3.5 drive wont work in S1 defaults. So I am waiting for a new drive I bought on Ebay. Other than that, it seems to work... but no way of getting stuff on the two hard drives in the system. It has a 120mb and a 80?mb. I wonder if the model 16 can be modded to run Macintosh, ST or Amiga software. They all use the same 68K chip.
@TJBChris
@TJBChris Ай бұрын
My best guess is most likely not - beyond the processor, it's not at all like the Mac, ST, or Amiga from an architectural standpoint. All IO (disk, video, keyboard, serial, etc.) for the 68000 subsystem is done through the Z80-side of the system, and the software running on the 68000 side has to work within that IO setup, requiring splitting of IO and application code between the two subsystems. And these systems lack real graphics capability by default...there's an add-on card available (again accessible via the Z80 IO subsystem). An interesting thought, though! Thanks for watching!
