How long is the ride? Is it really that high? Would you recommend it to someone who is afraid of heights lol

Probably about 10-15 minutes. Definitely would NOT recommend to someone with a fear of heights!

Oahu’s public transit is great. The bus system is accessible island-wide and there’s also a paratransit option called the HandiVan. Highly recommend both!

Could you really see that well with the buildings facade at face level? Want to make a wise choice what observation deck to actually visit.
@ThatsHowWeRoll9 ай бұрын
If memory serves, the fence/facade around the observation deck is one of the less obstructive visually, and there are actually some pretty big sections where the only thing between you and the view is a plexiglass panel!

This is so amazing, i am glad i cam across you guys. Ill be traveling to NYC in Nov with my husband and he is in a wheelchair. My question to you was how hard was it to find a restroom? i have to assist my husband so how does that work?
@ThatsHowWeRoll Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much. So exciting that you and your husband will get to visit NYC! Great question about bathrooms - if you ask us, that is hands-down the biggest overlooked accessibility challenge in exploring a new city. 😅 New York is definitely not known for its accessible public restrooms. In general we have found that restaurants are most likely to have an accessible bathroom, so always be on the lookout when you stop for a bite. This is especially true of chain restaurants. Starbucks has been our best friend in new cities - you can almost always count on them for an ADA bathroom! In a pinch, we are definitely not above popping into a hotel lobby and asking to use their facilities. Creative problem solving is the name of the game. Wishing you an awesome trip and an abundance of accessible restroom options. 😁

Oahu is the worse with ADA access. Many restaurants, stores, hotels, sidewalks, parks, all by pass the laws. City parks like the Kokohead trail have NO ACCESS for wheelchairs, yet it is a city park. There are sidewalk ramps and The Bus ramp because they got sued years ago. city and state just don't care. Not enough money to be made catering to ADA rules.

How is it traveling with 2 chairs? Any insight on doing it alone?
@ThatsHowWeRoll Жыл бұрын
Can’t say we wouldn’t rather pack light 😅, but for us, it’s an absolute necessity to have the manual chair as a backup. Handling two chairs alone would definitely be more of a challenge (hello intrepid adventurer!), but airport personnel and gate attendants should be able and willing to check both of your chairs at your request. Maybe check one chair with the rest of your luggage upon arrival, and request a gate check for the chair that you are sitting in until boarding. The most important thing is to give everyone as much heads-up as possible so they’re ready to help with what you need! We reiterate the info about the two chairs with everyone working at the airport from arrival to boarding.

That little bit of rocking that you did on the SUBWAY® shortly after three minutes, reminds me of when I was riding the elevator on the Eiffel tower. I was sitting in my mobility scooter, and we were going up, and all the sudden the elevator made this loud noise and lurched one way and then lurched back and everybody and I mean everybody ended up on the floor and I thought I was pretty good because I’ve had a low center of gravity and so I swung one way and I swan the other and I thought I was pretty good… But then it kept tilting and my whole Scooter went over and poured me out and everything 😂 people were screaming their heads off for like 20 minutes. I understand screaming while we are swinging but once it rights itself shush. 😂 if it was going to drop it would’ve done it then.

So I did not make it there for the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Unfortunately they were being stupid with their vaccine passport nonsense. But I am actually going there the fifth through the 10th of this month. What I’m most curious about is how in the world am I supposed to track which subway stations are wheelchair friendly. When I travel all over Europe in the last couple years, Google maps with track that for me, but it doesn’t seem to be doing it for New York.
@ThatsHowWeRoll Жыл бұрын
Such a good question! You can find a map of the “accessible” stations on the New York MTA (Metro Transit Authority) website, but unfortunately, that doesn’t always indicate full access for wheelchairs. It’s a bit of a crapshoot, honestly. Our best advice is to keep an eye on the posted alerts while you are navigating the subway - they will provide the most up-to-date info on temporary station closures, etc. (This info should also be available on the MTA website.) All things considered, though, the bus system is definitely the more reliable way to go as ALL the buses have wheelchair access. Hope you have an awesome trip!

In Hawaii we used the HandiVan, Oahu’s paratransit service. Fun fact: Every place in the US that has public transit MUST have a wheelchair accessible service to complement it! As long as you can fit your luggage on your lap, you can take the HandiVan from the airport to your lodging anywhere on the island. You can ride with an assistant and a friend, or they can take a taxi/Uber and bring your luggage if you’re not traveling light. 💁🏻♀️ You can visit the HandiVan website for eligibility info, but if you already qualify for paratransit in your home county, you can request visitor status ridership with your existing qualifications. Oahu also has a number of taxi companies with wheelchair accessible vans in their fleet, but really you can’t beat the HandiVan. www.honolulu.gov/transportation/divisions/mobility/thehandi-van.html

How do you use hoist and sling to get into the beach-chair?
@ThatsHowWeRoll2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, good question! We did a stand-and-pivot transfer. The place that provides the beach chair does not have a lift/hoist as far as we know, but perhaps there’s a way with a portable hoist if you can find a way to source one? There are paved areas and flat ground in the vicinity so technically it would be possible.

I went up to Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks and they have the Gondola ride which is totally wheelchair accessible. There are no rough stony paths and all asphalt. You don't even have to get out of your chair as they have ramps for you to drive right on. Another plus is that it's fully enclosed but you can see all around when inside. Then go up to the ''big'' Whiteface Mt. as you can go inside the mountain and take the elevator to the very peak. You can drive your wheelchair right out onto the deck to get fantastic views. Can't wait to go again! Try it some time, you won't be disappointed!!
