The biggest issue with hard starting xr’s is the bloody auto decompression on the cam. Press off the gear holder from cam, remove all the auto crap, grind down the two dowels and a 3/4 piece of hard drawn copper tube sleeve ensures oil flow

The "starter ratchet" assembly needs to be replaced, they are cheap.

Ethanol has a similar ph to gasoline. Why would that corrode a carburetor?
@JeffsLittleEngineService5 күн бұрын
it attracts moisture and the moisture then eventually corrodes the inside of the carb.

I have a briggs and Stratton 6.5hp engine has new carb new plug new fuel etc it’s 10 years old has sat for 10 years but won’t start anyone know why? It starts then dies if I squirt fuel in the carb and there is fuel in the bowl when I prime but won’t go to the engine
@JeffsLittleEngineService5 күн бұрын
Sounds like a fuel system problem. Need to clean gas tank, clean fuel lines, non contaminated gas and a carb that is not plugged and not a cheap aftermarket carb, because they are often crap.

indeed. I have had problems before getting rear wheels off due to rust, so I often just do it this way.

lol, I lost that little linkage rod. I guess I will have to make another because I asm sure it’s impossible to buy just that part. Interestingly you did not start it without the water hose running to it. I am assuming that this is a must to start it or not?
@JeffsLittleEngineService5 күн бұрын
A water supply is needed to prevent pump damage, if you run it for more that about 15 -30 seconds

I think you would have done better to disconnect electric power from the starter motor and taken the spark plug boot off the spark plug before you began this procedure. You know you could have accidentally started the engine and quite possibly injured yourself.

Just got home from picking one of these up for 50 bucks. It runs nice but only puting out about 400 watts. Going to watch this and tinker later. Am a happy camper even if unable to get the full potential as small, quiet, already more power than needed, and definitely fits the pocket book.

Thanks for all the clear explanations and tips. I spent all day trying to make my pressure washer go. It had been sitting in the shed for close to a year. So, I emptied the gas tank, sprayed carb cleaner in the carb, replaced spark plug and nothing. I gave up after my arm was sore of pulling the starter. I watched your video late at night and when you got to the plugged main jet I had to go out and try it. I used one of those tiny little wires that are used to close bread bags. Sprayed some more carb cleaner and yay!!! 11:45pm at night and made it run!!! Thanks a million!!!

You should’ve took the air cover off so you can inspect the filtered. Also, if it is been sitting out in the rain you may have to clean the flywheel cause it’ll be rusted up so you won’t get a good electrical connection between the flywheel and the coil.
