Wow you did well to find bearings like those. Would you mind telling me what sort of oil you are using in your headstock please? I have replaced mine after a lot of trying to find a correct fluid but ended up taking a ISO68 fluid recommended by a local supplier however it seems thinner than yours although Im not sure what speed you are running those shots at. The chances of being able to get the same fluid as you have is slim in New Zealand but worth asking. The problem I find here is I have to buy gallons as they don't supply in small quantities.

Thanks! it was a fun project. I'm running ISO 32 hydraulic oil in my headstock. I think the last gallon I purchased was around $20 USD or so. I agree that it appears to be too thin but that's what EMCO recommended. Could 30W motor oil be used? - probably. I just haven't tested it out.

@@roddyworkshop4454 30W is quite thick so I dont think so but the real issue in using motor oil is they have detergents in them which causes foaming in headstocks but the real problem is in a car you want any particles to stay in suspension so it can be filtered out but in a headstock you want the particles to fall to the bottom as there is no filtering. Thats my understanding anyway

You did a very fine job, making the replacement shift fork! It does highlight the value of a contour band saw in the shop. My lathe is a V10-P and so far I have had no mechanical issues with it; I got it second hand in 1991. The electrical switches I was ready to throw out and replace them with a relay panel. My very talented son took on the repair, and 20 years later the switch is still operable. Not a bad lathe apart from a few shortcomings which, to me, are rather inexcusable.

Even if you had a press, you would have put stress on the bearings when you pressed that assembly on. The better way would be to press the bearings onto the shaft first, via the inner races, then install the flange/housing over the bearings last, because it's not a press fit.

Greetings from the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 Great film and nice work on what looks to be a very serviceable modification. I came here on the recommendation of my brother Dean, at Retromeccanica. He has an Emco Maximat V10P. They are quite rare machines in the UK so I imagine even more so in the US. I have a far more common (in the UK anyway) Harrison lathe. Anyway, I enjoyed your video and I've subscribed.

Thank you! It was a fun little project that, so far, is working great. You are spot on - these machines are extremely hard to come by in the US, at least near me. Harrison lathes are quite beefy! If I had more space then I would love to upgrade to bigger machine. As always, I appreciate the support and will try to make decent videos.

That's a great upgrade. I'll be copying that at some point. I'm spreading the word about your channel, your filming is very good. I need to learn how to do it better. Best wishes, Dean in Oxfordshire UK.

I appreciate the support and glad to hear you liked the idea! I wasn't sure if switching to bearings would make any difference, but so far the headstock noise I was hearing has almost disappeared. I'll try to remember to through in a before and after clip in the next video. I'm still learning how to do all the filming/editing as well, but thank you!

@@roddyworkshop4454 good news that the noise has reduced. I imagine that the bushes on my 7 were probably worn too. These are quite old machines now, my Maximat V10P is a 1973, as old as I am.

@@retromechanicalengineer It doesn't surprise me that they were worn, especially on the pulley side. Mine was made in 1968, so it's about 25 years older than I am!
