Where can one learn about timing prop against exhaust for these pusher configurations? Is it even possible to do something like a 4-bladed prop w/ this engine (6 cylinders) without melting the prop?
@GregoryACross10 ай бұрын
That's a good question, to which I don't have an answer. I've not noticed any soot collection on the propeller at all, from my limited runs. I suppose one could locate top dead center of a cylinder and see where the prop times. Conversely, one could drill the prop such that it's not in front of the exhaust when an exhaust valve opens by observing the valve stems with the valve covers removed.

Hi Greg, Did you get the engine mount from UL Power or was it custom-made?
@GregoryACross Жыл бұрын
Sean, my engine mount was custom-made, because at the time nobody made one commercially. I understand that UL Power (USA) now has a source of engine mounts. I suggest you contact Ray Lawrence at Kaolin Aviation. He's UL Power's technical representative here in the US. (478) 232-9560.

This is great, except...if you run a tank dry, your dual redundant fuel system now has multiple single points of failure: you're totally dependent on the remaining fuel pump, gate valve and filters all operating perfectly, with no option to revert to your redundant system. I think I would change this to utilize a common sump tank, then have the pump system selectable by the pilot. Fuel injection return could just go back to the sump, rather than a specific blister. The selector valve could select between which blister feeds the sump tank.

Hello Greg, Because the UL Power engine is significantly lighter than legacy Lycoming and Continental engines, did you have to make any adjustments regarding center of gravity?
@GregoryACross Жыл бұрын
Yes, I did. I extended the engine mount 2", and shortened the prop extension by 2" so that the prop remained in the same relative position. With less weight on the back end, the maximum front seat capacity was reduced. Moving the engine backward helped restore that. (Remember that my installation is a pusher arrangement).

I'm a little sad that you didn't make any airplane noises for us. Don't worry, I made my own to compensate. Really interesting that the screen brightness is all slaved off the PFD's sensor. Your tape trick was even more useful than you intended it to be. Do you keep a charger on the battery while hangar flying/testing/setup? Looks amazing so far. I'm looking forward to the real ride-along video someday.
@GregoryACross Жыл бұрын
I was also surprised that the brightness of both displays were slaved together to be controlled by either sensor. Yes, I have an Odyssey battery and I leave the Odyssey smart charger/conditioner connected at all times, except when I take it outside to run the engine periodically. It seems to be doing a good job of maintaining the battery in good condition.

So if you engage the second pump utilizing the boost button then move the selector valve, then disengage the boost button do you still get the rpm drop?
@GregoryACross2 жыл бұрын
That's a promising idea! I'll have to try it. It makes sense. The valve only determines where the excess pumped fuel goes, so the turning off of one pump and turning on the other one would seem to be the cause of the momentary pressure drop and the rpm drop. By starting the other pump first, that should alleviate the problem.

Why did you pick the Dynon over the G3x? I am somewhat familiar with the G3x and its options, but I know very little about the Dynon.
@GregoryACross2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I guess I was swayed by costs. Dynon offers free periodic updates, that I think Garmin charges for. I felt that Dynon's initial purchase price was slightly less, also. Please don't go by just these comments. Explore the virtues of each to make your decision. They're both excellent choices.

Hi Greg, did you have any difficulty with mounting that engine on a Cozy? Does an engine mount and FWF come with the engine?
@GregoryACross2 жыл бұрын
Sean, the engine comes with the mount points that are intended to be welded onto a mount appropriate to the aircraft you are installing your engine on. Since the Cozy is not a kit, i.e. it's scratch built from plans, there is no mount provided with the engine. However, it does come with all the accessories you would normally have to buy separately. UL Power here in the U.S. will build you a custom mount on request. You would want to talk to UL Power service rep. Ray Lawrence at Kaolin Aviation in Georgia about it: (478) 232-9560.

Your workmanship is outstanding. I love your posts. Please keep adding content. Please don't be taken aback at my concern. It is not a criticism. It is a concern to keep you from injury. I was cringing as I watched you turn your prop. I don't disagree with why you were doing it. I worry about your technique. Much like gun safety, treat all guns as if they are loaded; treat all props as if they will start running if you turn them. There are many reasons that a prop will bite you if you turn it. AvWeb did a great video on proping a plane, even covering moving the prop with the ignition off. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJrMenWwZqZ4pLM
@GregoryACross2 жыл бұрын
K Verb - thank you very much for your concern! You are correct. Engines with magnetos are particularly dangerous. This engine is very much like a modern automotive engine. It has FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control), multi-point fuel injection and electronic ignition. (No magnetos). Although it wasn't shown on the video, I had just made sure that the master power solenoid was open (no ship's power), and also that the power switch to the ECU (Engine Control Unit) was also "off". There is no way this engine will run with no spark. It's kind of like coasting down the hill in a car and popping the clutch. If the key is off, it isn't going to start. However, similar to your gun safety analogy, making a habit of not manually turning ANY propeller is a good habit to have! Thanks again for your concern.

Ah shame you couldn't wait for the turbo that would be 220 ktas easily
@GregoryACross2 жыл бұрын
I'm not so sure... upping the horsepower doesn't affect the air frame drag characteristics. Down low, it wouldn't make much difference, as drag goes up with the square of the velocity. But at 15,000 feet, you could be right! What I would expect would be fantastic climb rates! At this point, I wouldn't want to go to the extra expense and effort to make the change. I want to see this thing fly before I die!
