Thank you so much for this. You have massively underplayed just how helpful this is. I've yet to start and have been playing around testing but your video has given me so much confidence in the project and that it's something I am capable of doing even with a low technical ability with technology. This has been super helpful, by far the best video I have seen on this subject and while you do say it isn't a step by step guide you have actually given us everything we need in this short video to complete our projects from total beginner level, from recording well to editing and uploading. Perfect for those using Apple computers. I'm not sure if its a garageband update but the narrator's voice option is fantastic for audio book recordings. I'm extremely grateful for you and your guide. Personally I feel your video covers everything we need. Fantastic and a gift for us all. Pressure is off now, I can just enjoy the recording. Thank you so much.🥰

Hi Claire, I'm not currently offering services like that. But the good news is that it's getting easier and easier to do it yourself. Why don't you send me an email through my contact page (robdircks.com/contact), and tell me specifically what you're trying to accomplish (is this just for him? for your family? for the world? On amazon? What gear do you have? Are you constrained by budget? etc.) And I'll try to offer pointers on getting it done. - Rob

I have never been asked this! I'd have to say I'm not a fan, as there'd be tons of ambient noise (unless it's parked in some seriously out-of-the-way place with no wildlife or airplane sounds at all). But hey, if you can make it work, go for it!

I just started recording my first Audio Book with ACX.I'm using version 3.4.2- My original recording is with a RodeCaster 2, then edit the audio in Logic ProX, and I was able to export and all my numbers pass ACX Audio test with one fail- RMS is -23.7. What I also don't understand is that when I import files that are 24-bit into Audacity, it changes the files to 36bit float (automatically). I'm having issues, Can you do this with my version 3.4.2 so I can understand better how to fix my files to make them ACX ready.

Hey Gary, sorry to say that is waaaay out of my expertise range. In this case, I'd call ACX directly (www.audible.com/contactus-acx). Over the years I've found them very helpful, or at least attempt to point you in the right direction. Good luck! - Rob

Yes, my larger screen is connected via a USB-C cable to my laptop. You can definitely do wifi now though if you need. (Personally when I record I actually turn off bluetooth and wifi to eliminate any chance of interference.)

Hi. I hope you're well. This video is almost a decade old. But the crazy thing is, I came across your website yesterday when I was searching Google for presets for GarageBand, as I forgot I had it, but I started using it as I was switching from Adobe Audition. I then randomly came across you on KZbin tonight as well, and this video did in fact answer some of my questions before I even asked you. I have one book in review on ACX, and I wanted to have a narration preset for GarageBand. So thanks for providing your presets for me. However, for the life of me, I can't seem to move the tracks when I'm editing like you just did in this video. When I try to move the track closer to the other clipped track, it just stretches the original deleted audio back onto the track, looks like. I'll try again, but editing on GarageBand is a bit different than doing it on Adobe, but I do like how GarageBand overall just seems easier to use, IF I can just figure out this editing thing on there.
@RobDircks
@RobDircks Жыл бұрын
Yes, editing on Garageband can be a bit tricky. When moving the region to shorten the edit, you have to make sure to select the region at the top, otherwise you'll get that stretching. (Believe me, it's happened to me a million times!) Good luck!

@@RobDircks Good morning! Thanks for your response. I somewhat figured it out. It just seems like sometimes I have to click several times before it wants to work lol. It might be the settings on this new MacBook Pro. Even dragging icons on the desktop into GarageBand or from finder is a chore compared to windows. I’d click an mp3 icon to drag it into GarageBand and instead of dragging, the audio file would just start to play in Apple Music. Yesterday was supposed to be a day of shuffling my audio samples on my different audition platforms. Maybe today lol. Thanks again.

@@RobDircks I figured it out after I sent my last response. These newer trackpads have different sensitivity settings. If I press down softly, the selector pops up. If I press down hard as I have been, then you’re ready to throw your $3,000 MacBook Pro out the window because you don’t think it works lol.

Awesome video! So helpful. A few questions: What text do you need to say before and after the book? Do you need to say "Chapter 1" in the audio before chapter one? Do you need to add any other sounds?
@RobDircks
@RobDircks Жыл бұрын
Yes, if you're using ACX to publish, you'll need to announce "Chapter 1," etc. The opening credits minimum requirements: "[title of audiobook]", "(subtitle if applicable)", Written by [name of author], Narrated by [name of narrator]. Your closing credits minimum requirement is a separate file that reads: "The End" Here's a link to ACX's full requirements: help.acx.com/s/article/acx-audio-submission-requirements

Thanks for the great video! Im an author....but im also an on air personality...so after a few years, lol, i have de ided to begin narrating my own books using my radio personality training and editing skills. Ill have to work on my voice a bit more. More enunciation, slow down my talking. Kind of like how i read the obits, bit with more dramatic inflection than i would use on them. So basically a mix between my live on air personality....and my clear concise speaking while imparting solemn news like the obits. Anyhoo,it makes sense in my head. So thanks so much for the vids. Will be following more of your vids!!! I use adobe audition at the radio station. :)

Would you suggest starting off with short stories or should I just go straight to publishing a novel?
@RobDircks
@RobDircks Жыл бұрын
I know it'll sound like a cop-out answer, but do what you're drawn to! If the idea of a novel right now is too daunting, totally write shorts, I love shorts for this reason. And there's a whole industry in selling shorts to e-magazines if you want to make a bit of money going that route. Or... dive right into the novel if that's what's calling to you. In either case, good luck!

I've used several different things over the years. That original stuff I forget the brand, but it was something like this: www.amazon.com/stores/JBER/page/C11B0862-B581-4ECB-A38E-970832C1FA36. Since then I've used a few, and my favorite was the full sheets, really deadened the sound (but I also had it in my teeny-tiny closet booth!) www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007P34Y2. For a cheaper alternative (and what I have now, actually), these are great: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08QN6B2FD?th=1

Very informative. I noticed your audible price is higher than paperback. Is this normal? I'm thinking I need to get my book into audio form. Oh! Would you care to share your stats or industry stats on sales of audio vs ebook? It appears more people want to listen vs read these days.
@RobDircks
@RobDircks Жыл бұрын
Audible sets the price of your audiobook, so you don't have any say in that. They're definitely higher priced than paperbacks/ebooks, that's normal, but that higher price gives the author a higher royalty (a definite plus!). For me, my audiobook unit sales are much higher than my paperback/ebook sales. I'm not sure if that's about people listening more in general, but it seems my work reads better in audio? In any case, I love narrating, so it works out!

How difficult is the editing process in for recording and finishing an audiobook? I have a treated space and not much background noise but then there are other little small nuances that goes into the editing I'm sure. Is there ever a chance where lets say you record a 2 hr. book and then you go into editing and things are impossible to fix to meet ACX standards and you have to re-record the entire book again ? or are edits a more simpler fix?
@RobDircks
@RobDircks Жыл бұрын
For me the answer is all of the above! I have totally had to re-record hours-long narrations (a total bummer). I have carefully edited clips to avoid re-recording. I have played endlessly in Garageband and Logic Pro to reduce noise and get just the sound I want. There is no exact right way, just know that especially in the beginning, there's a LOT of trial and error, and that's totally normal. Good luck!

For self-publishing authors, it's your normal Amazon account. You can, I think, create a new Amazon account and start from scratch using that as your "author" account. I don't know of any seller contact/link, although there is Amazon Author Central (uses the same basic Amazon account), where you can get in touch with them regarding publishing issues -- author.amazon.com/home

Hey Rob. It's been a while and your help in the past has been most appreciated. As I watch you on this video, you are not wearing headphones. I prefer to refrain from using them. However, I just realized that I recorded at the top of my Mac output to get the sound I want. But when I put headphones on, I could hardly hear anything. Has tyhat Ever happened to you and if so what the hell now?
@RobDircks
@RobDircks 3 жыл бұрын
I may not be the best person to ask this question, as I record narration in my own way: once I get my levels/eq/plugins exactly where I want them and do some quick tests, I do NOT keep my headphones on. I like the way it feels and sounds without them. Then when I'm reviewing/editing I put the headphones back on. If you want the headphones on all the time (how most people do it I imagine), you'll have to find where your device has a headphone levels control. (My audio interface has separate input/output volume controls.)
