The working class are way ahead of leftist academics today, the means of production are available for everyone in a way that was inconceivable to Marx, most working class have realised this, now run businesses, professions or have investment portfolios which enable them to lead comfortable lives. Leftist academics are too attached to utopian modernist fantasies.

I’m so tired of frickin philosphical thought castles with all the fancy words... The only thing this sophistication of language has brought us is alienating all people that never had the time to learn all this shit vocabulary, its like another language. “Socialism” - wtf does he even mean EXACTLY. Sure, you can call me stupid that I dont know that, but I say that as someone who studied Philosophy for almost two years; all you intellectuals need to get your head out of your own asses and talk like normal human beings, give ACTUAL Advice and Ideas and not fight amongst each other about who used the right word... Seriously wake the fuck up. The world doesn’t revolve about your highly intellectual concept distinctions. One person says he is socialist but really thinks only about himself, the other says he is conservative but wants to help people... It doesn’t make any sense on a practical scale. I turned my back on philosophy 5 years ago because I thought it was only a bunch of rich kids who coated real problems with unnecessarily complicated words and fighted each other for which concept was the most popular... it seems it has not changed and people keep on suffering without a solution.

I understand your sentiment but that’s not a logical argument to not do philosophy. To discuss complex ideas you need complex words. You wouldn’t discuss physics using everyday language. ‘Socialism’ is not some super technical term. Zizek does not say anything overly impenetrable in this clip.

He is right - as the climate situation progresses emergency states (non social/liberal democracies) will most likely arise, and I would much rather have the Reds be in charge of them than the fascists.

France is right now entering an emergency state: slashing social policies while ramping up military spending. And they don't need the climate as an excuse. Russia is enough of an excuse for them, even though it's quite clear that Russia would never attack a fellow nuclear power. Emergency states are just part and parcel of the capitalist playbook. Shock Therapy by any other name.

the "reds" have arguably exasperated the situation far more than modern liberal/capitalist states, by following the 18th century model of industrial development. Look how much China or the USSR devotes/devoted to War, and how little they actually improved or revolutionised social life.

This time is qualitatively different. Capital is now destroying the basis for human life on the planet. Although "the world" might keep going, it will do so in a way hostile to humans, and in a way that means the death of millions of people now living and unborn. Its easy to say "this is just another crisis", but 1) its not, as it is destabilising the climate that birthed all human civilisation and 2) its up to us to try and make the "keeping on of the world" as well functioning as possible - optimism in practice.

"the rutles" is the best beatles' parody. i still watch it on a regular basis. neil innes did a great job on the songs. they actually sound as though lennon and mccartney could've written them. great idea and nice execution. thanks for the video.
