I actually saw Cahill's performance on his channel before seeing this video. He makes it look so easy! I've been learning this recently (teacherless currently, prob a bad idea lol) and was having trouble finding a comfortable way to play the left hand in the first section. I'm glad the camera focused on his hands a bit in the video, because I was able to go frame by frame and see the 1-5 crossover and 1-2-3-5 for the wide descending B flat arpeggio. Still felt a little awkward at first but after fiddling with arm/wrist geometry it's super comfortable now. Will def need to watch the full lesson soon!

Great video! You once again proved that Bernard Shaw was wrong when he said: “Those who can, do; those who can't, teach.”. You can 'do' and teach as well! Thank you very much!

Mr. Wright is a good player, but he is still far off compared to top-level concert artists such as Lang Lang, Yuja Wang, Yundi Li, Trifonov, Sololov, Yunchan Lim, George Li, Eric Lu, and other greats. He is a decent player but pretty mediocre from a concert performer standpoint. And he doesn't make a living as a performer either. Check his schedule. He has very few concerts and certainly doesn't make a living in that area. He doesn't play with major orchestras either. He isn't terrible, but he certainly doesn't make a living as a performer.

Wright is a teacher for a living. Not a performer. But yes, I know that there are full-time teachers whose playing IS at a concert level such as Moutouzkine, Pompe Baldi, Kobrin, and others. There are many others, but I know that these men are all of concert pianist level and are certainly up to the job of performing. Some people just aren't as lucky. Simone Dinnerstein couldn't win any competition in her 20s and made her concert career at age 35. She was stuck doing teaching work prior and to a degree, this is a matter of luck, but skill level is definitely a factor.

@@palmtreesmusic1945It would be nice if the elite performers whom you mention would actually teach us the same here on KZbin, as Josh. But since so many of these elite caliber pianists do not, I’m pleased to have Josh here as a teacher, period. 😊

@@palmtreesmusic1945 I'm not sure, but apparently out of a desire to criticize Josh, you either misunderstood or distorted my comment. I didn't say Josh is a top player, or even that he's a concert pianist (although he is, not primarily, but he is). What I said, quoting and contradicting Bernard Shaw, is that *_Josh really knows what he wants to teach,_* and exemplifies it very well with his own hands, unlike many piano "teachers".

Thanks Josh. Great tutorial. You seem to be using very different fingering to the scores available on Imslp for (at least) the first section scales, in those scores the hands cross and "own" a whole mesaure of 6 notes, but you seem to be repeating 1/3/2 with right/left/right. Is there a different score, or did you just apply your own fingering to it?

Josh- thank you for sharing your truth about life and forever learning. It is an inspiration to many of us. I was a musician from a young age and set it aside during my career. I’ve recently returned to the piano in earnest and just had my first lesson. I was disappointed to learn that my “technique” is severely lacking. After getting over my hurt feelings I’ve decided to work at fixing my technique. It seems strange to have to learn how to approach the keys, but I’m accepting that it’s the only way I can move beyond my current level. Thanks again for providing us with many tools for our musical journey. ✌️👍

Thank you, Josh. I’m attempting to learn it now and agree with your approach, especially concerning the shaping of the melody, and the harmony. That can get lost very quickly if you get overly focused on fingering, etc. I’m still trying to learn the fingering.

Josh, I know you're a virtuoso, but your touch and tone is always so beautiful. I honestly think you're underrated. I really like the timbre of your piano, do you have any videos where you talk about the instrument you use? (Searching "Josh Wright piano" doesn't work for obvious reasons)

In all of the mechanical aspects of anything inching efficiency is the key word, whether it’s playing guitar, piano, sports, or anything else. Tension has to be avoided, superfluous motion has to be avoided if it doesn’t have a particular use. There are quite a few base techniques for piano fingering and I think the Chopin way of looking at things fits right in this efficiency mantra.

People that are saying “the people that are saying he is playing it too fast is wrong” for beginners, you play it slowly and then build up the speed. He even says to do that in a different video 1:25
