God bless us and keep us, would that I had a teacher who even hopes to exercise love!?! With students?!?! As a kid I had one teacher who was loving and that was it. As an adult, I have had teachers who hit on me, teachers who use the lesson to show-boat their piano skills, teachers who wanted to perform and lessons were just for the money, teachers who came late and left early... All I could do was not give up, just keep going and trust it would all work out. Josh seems a fine pianist and teacher. I can tell you if he came anywhere near where I live, he would have a years' long waiting-list of students. Anyway, even Jesus had haters, and he was perfect, so it's no surprise that someone thinks Josh is not a supermodel...😂 Jokes aside, thanks for your work, Josh, keep it up.

Damn i went through TSW. It did not cure my eczema, but i was not a red itchy mess all year round. It made me notice my allergens more. Dust mite is the main one for me! I threw out my mattress and got a new one and covered it in dust and waterproof mattress cover. Game changer.

John Wright's gift to us is that he is comfortable making mistakes and adjusting for them. It informs us how these mistakes are a major source of feedback. There is no evidence that he ever get tense. Very heartening!

What he related about competition is analogous with chess grandmasters. It's not enough to just become a grandmaster (elo 2500). In order to get the invitations to the most prestigious events you need to be above 2750 for the most part. Otherwise it's a real grind to try and make a living from tournaments alone. This is why many grandmasters end up teaching, either as a supplement or a career avenue. It's just too damn hard if you are not in the top 1/2 of 1% of chess players globally. And when you think of all the lost childhoods it's really a sobering narrative. The same thing goes for professional cyclists. The best make the big money. The others will get by but it won't always be pretty.

I noticed he uses both the sustain and una corda pedal at the same time. I have become very accustomed to doing this with half pedaling. I like the sound and the fact it reduces any muddy overtone from the sustain. I'm also torn on pedaling Bach. I don't know weather to five it the sound Bach heard, or the one he would have liked if he had a piano. I like controlling my legato and staccato.
@benlawdy
@benlawdy 7 күн бұрын
I’ve come to the conclusion that what matters most is the resulting sound and not the means you use to produce it. Don’t be fooled by seeing my big ugly shoe on the pedal. I’m mostly resting on the surface of it and just dabbing it (maybe 10-20% depressed) at certain moments to add a ring to a sound or to surgically connect notes in a phrase to my liking. The left foot is similar, I touch it for color purposes from time to time (and maybe use it more in smaller rooms with a nice grand like Josh’s). I’m able to play everything without my feet, which I recommend as part of learning Bach, but then as pianists - it’s useful to learn to have our feet ready on the pedals as we’re listening to and responding to the sound we’re creating.
@eddygonzalez2328
@eddygonzalez2328 7 күн бұрын
@benlawdy Ah, I keep my feet on the pedal too, but sometimes your sudden small movement where hard to tell. I'm sure you were not using your pedal throughout. I am very cautios with Bach. Especially his Partitas. Some tend to have a clear melody tossed between hands. Partita no 13 is one I like to highlight the melody while keeping the arpeggios in the background. But I notice few people do this. What's your take?
@benlawdy
@benlawdy 7 күн бұрын
@@eddygonzalez2328 so long as your caution is about matching your sound to your intentions, and not about whether you should or shouldn’t use pedal in Bach (which is not a false debate), then there’s not need to worry. Not sure which partita you’re referring to.

@benlawdy Sorry, I meant Invention. I have the Alfred edition. I've always liked playing them since I first learned them many years ago. When the dinosaurs roamed the hallways. I know no.4 and 8 are the ones most people like to play, but my favorite have always been no.13. I've listened to several recordings and for some reason, It just doesn't feel right to me. But perhaps it's my Chopin influence. No.13 has a very distinct melody that is repeated by RH and LH. I like highlighting the melody while keeping those broken chords floating in the background. Not completely obscure, but without competing with the melody. Do you have a recording of it? To be honest, despite of undergraduate and later one year of graduate school, it never occurred to me to ask my professor.

wow! this is so helpful! As a new pianist teaching myself with lots of different music videos, the points in this are priceless! I did tell myself, "don't memorize to improve sight reading", but your advice is spot on. No one ever pointed that out.... I was frustrated because what was happening to me is exactly as you say! Thank you for your frank discussions and practical usable information! I also have been experiencing hand pain, and now that I am relaxing my flying pinkie, it's so much better! The pain is gone! You are kind and brilliant, a lovely combination!
