The front end of these Fords for 61 reminded me of Cadillac of the same year.

Here again engineering is the reason. Buick has soft coils in its rear suspension. Chrysler has long wide leaf springs. Well past the bump now and just look at that Chrysler level out. Buick is still dipping in front as you can see.

The Ford is undoubtedly a better looking automobile. Although Plymouth did make some very good vehicles back then. And even though the horsepower of both engines is fairly the same the Ford Flathead V8 is a far more torquier and speedier engine. By 53 Ford had gotten quite a few of the overheating and vapor locking issues worked out by that time. I will also add that I found both the Plymouth and the Ford to be better looking cars than what Chevy was turning out during that time. That body design was getting pretty long in the tooth by the early 50's.

@@TomSnyder-gx5ru When you are paying that much money for an automobile in 1961 the least you deserve is a spacious well appointed interior to stretch out in. Cadillac and Imperial gave you that kind of interior. The Lincoln interior was too cramped EVEN with the beautiful walnut inlays on the doors and dashboard.

I like the approach. A tangent, but this (including period test impressions) was one of the things that made old SIA magazine worth keeping - that, and the fact that the writers recorded their own genuine driving impressions of the test vehicles as usable cars, not collectors objects. Hemmings later messed it all up with HCC, skewing everything toward a restorer and collector perspective - and thus its passing in 2025 isn't a great loss

For all of you complainers, those old magazines had few pictures, often fuzzy and black and white. Would you rather he showed those and only those in a 10 minute video? Then you'd have something else to complain about. Keep doing these original road test videos. It's interesting to know what they had to say about the cars when new.

I love the way when they're showing these suitcases in the trunk they are standing on their sides in the Chevy while laying flat in the other two vehicles so naturally it appears that you have a lot more space available in the trunk of the Chevy. When in reality they were probably all pretty close to the same size. I once drove a 63 Chevy Biscayne 4 door sedan. Ember red with a red interior God it was ugly. With a 230 ci 6 cylinder and a two speed power glide. It was a gutless dog of a car and stodgy as can be. Handed down to me from my mom. The most uncool car for a 16 year old kid to be driving. It was a solid but totally pedestrian vehicle.

Let me first say that I really enjoy these type of videos and I hope you produce more of them. I've always felt it the 61 Ford was a pretty nice looking car rhat had very clean and smooth lines . That said, I've always felt it was overlooked during its time. I just remember as a 10-year-old boy hearing my father and grandfather who were both Ford guys talking about the 61 Ford. Saying that they thought The styling was too plain and GM looking compared to how the 59 and 60 Ford's looked. My grandfather was the bigger of the two when it came to being a Ford fan. But I remember him clearly saying that while he thought the '61 Ford looked pretty sleek. In his opinion it was hard to beat the looks of a '61 Chevy bubble top. He may have liked the looks of them but I know for a fact he would never would have bought a Chevy. He was a Ford guy his whole life.

My favorite color on the '61 Galaxie is Corinthian White. Interior color: the trendy red and white. And make it a Sunliner! Mercury that year had styling adapted from the Galaxie, but more generic Buick inspired lines. Both Ford and Mercury shared a lot in '61, but Mercury didn't have the bulbous quarter panels of the Ford. From an objective standpoint, with both cars being similar, bold is what best describes the new Galaxie. Conservative, if in innocuous taste was Mercury, save for the far more aggressive grille. On the Mercury, I have a similar choice of Sultana White, and of course, the contemporary red and white interior. Ford for '61 and a good many will agree, has it all over the overly dimensioned and conservative this time to an underwhelming standard of styling referred to as Extreme Streamlined, which not a lot, again, warmed up to. Even the new Mercury with Its' own degree of conservatism, could look as sporty as a Pontiac, as highway muscular particularly the Monterey convertibles. It all depended on taste, and your wallet being your guide on both of Ford's offerings that year. I don't care somehow for the ultra rare Starliner, though. I'll take the Galaxie 500 Standard Hardtop, after the Sunliner, and then either the Country Squire or Colony Park. All in white, please. The rear of the Galaxie is my favorite part of the car. The Monterey a toss up between bow and stern. Ford did better indeed in '61 than any other makes that year. Why don't we see many preserved is anyone's guess.
