Yeah GM was like "can we kill off Pontiac yet?"...

Pontiac more than any other division suffered from Roger Smith-era GM's unwillingness to spend the cost-per-unit to make a "premium" car feel nice. He was willing to throw billions away on reorgs and all-at-once robotization since in theory that would "scale" but not on material quality. It was the opposite of "put the money where the customer can see it", and it took GM decades to recover.

A lot of dumb CEO's making millions upon millions destroying companies out there.

If I was in a Pontiac showroom in '05 looking for a 4-door I'd go home in a Vibe GT with the Toyota 2ZZ engine and 6-speed manual. None of their last sedans except maybe the G8 ($$$) appeal to me.

This generation GP was such a lousy looking car, amateurish styling. They were pretty good cars but interiors were very cheap and bland feeling.

I had no idea they did these kinds of films for this long. Like it makes sense, but I just wasn't expecting it.

Yeah it was super detailed... I guess just try to provide as much info to the salesman as you could... They were getting slaughtered by the Camry and probably even the Altima...

AND other cars lets give an example from 1980-1983 the Chrysler Cordoba/Dodge Mirada twins had no “Dealer Films “ One would expect one for sure back then!!

19:39 You know they were in trouble when they feel they have to mention the "single-piece side body frame structure" in 2005, which Ford Europe also talked a great deal about. On the Ford Sierra in 1982.

If i was in the market for a new car in 2005 I would be looking at Toyota or Honda, definitely NOT a G.M. I currently own a 2005 Chevrolet Classic and a 2006 Buick Lacrosse definitely not G.M.s finest hour.

Nope, not at all. Owned a 2005 Saturn Relay back in the day. It was a huge downgrade even from the Chrysler vans. Almost insulting. Yet explains why they don't make them anymore. lol.

Nissan Altima's mortal enemy has always been the Grand Prix driver.

I really liked this gen and also the previous gen Grand Prix, specially the GTP and GXP versions.. It had slick styling and the 'Wide Track' look. GM spoiled their brands with too much rebadging and platform sharing, they failed to understand that mere rebodies on the same platform without brand specific powertrains and lack of quality interior materials wouldnt cut it. The lack of success for the Grand Am didnt help Pontiac, the Govt. bailout sealed the brand's fate.
@autochronicles86675 ай бұрын
Yeah wasn't this up against the Camry? I swear GM was like "just kill us already we know we put out crap"... the 3.6 was the only good thing going for it. I liked the GTP and GXP versions of the Pontiacs also..

The Altima is mopping the floor with the grand prix, the accord and Camry was more of its speed.

I think these cars were good looking. But they haven't aged as well as the '97 to '04 Grand Prix which is a mild classic in terms of styling. That car was in want of more refinement (i.e. Mazda, Honda) not more styling gimmicks. The center stack is atrocious as well. Those grey buttons scream 1995.
@anthony2219565 ай бұрын
If Pontiac thought the Grand Prix was competing with the Altima, that explains the ugly styling of the last Grand Prix... They really didn't understand the history and appeal of the earlier Grand Prix cars.

As equipped they are not giving the sales personnel very many advantages. I was expecting for them to have better counterpoints to highlight against the areas where the Altima has the advantage. Considering the superior power of the Altima's 3.5 why not have the GTP as the recommended comparison and leaving the GT for the 2.5 model Altima.
