I am not interested in typing up every word he is saying since it is very basic instructions. However, the most important thing Masunaga Sensei says is that in the West too many people rely on the taking of notes. He says notes in a book are knowledge. However, you should stop taking notes, don't write, and only look and grasp the "feeling". This is a basic teaching in Japanese study known as Mitori Geiko (Observation Training). You must slow your mind down and: "Look, Listen, and Learn".

These actually gave rise to western Chiropractics. The founder of Chiropractics, David Palmer met with the founder of Shiatsu (Tokujiro Namikoshi) and studied Japanese forms of manipulation. Both Palmer and Namikoshi shared theories together with each other to formulate their arts.

@petriehg1 Yes these are my video clips which I uploaded to share with the world. As seen in the video with proper posture both knees can be used to apply varying degrees of pressure with control. In traditional Japanese arts such as Anma and later on Shiatsu there are a number of adjustments techniques (Kosei Ho) for realigning all the joints and bones of the body.

@yotsumedojo thank you for these comments , are you the uploader of this ? it is rare indeed , I find it fascinating how "light" on his feet sensei is , if you lean with both knees on the LV SI meridian inner leg in side posture your patient will hit the roof! but notice Sensei is on his toes curled in, he is light as a feather and can control the pressure , Is the neck stretch at end of 3/4 vid ok ? that is tantamount to a chiropractic adjustment ?

@petriehg1 Ohashi had his own "style" that is for sure. In this video Masunaga Sensei is showing very basic methods not a set routine or "kata". So as for Kyojitsu and Hosha you would of had to maybe train with the man to see his ways of applying sedation and tonification outside of this simple workshop video. As for "robust" bodywork verse "pet the rainbow non-pressure"... a correct therapist takes things case by case in relationship with the patient's condition and constitution.

wud like sum1 2 explain why Masunaga style appears more robust than Ohashi ? , I prefer former as most patients want to feel there is bodywork being done , also curious to know in terms of jitsu /kyo. there is no apparent toning or sedating in this process ? or am i missing something ? sequence is amazing and clever way everything done from one side and is able to work spleen st liver kidney on both legs staying on the same side !, harry .SA [email protected]

@ardanash Even though Masunaga Sensei is speaking in broken English it is clear what he is saying during each of the video clips that I posted. I might type up what he says in English. It could then be translated to different languages. This is a great idea. I think I will do this and create a webpage for the translations to be posted to.

Hi!! Thank you so much for these videos! they are awesome! I was just wondering if anybody has a transcript of what Masunaga sensei says on the videos? Or is anybody interested in helping me to do the transcript? I'm from Spain and my English is not that good, and I'd love to understand also what it's said on the videos (although I agree that watching and understand what you watch is more important than the words!) Thanks again!!!

You are welcome! It is nice to see pure technique from Masunaga Sensei before people get their hands on his work and invent their own distortions. Some therapists can really enter into Mushin (No Mind) and work correctly! Others have no idea how to practice and they are stuck making up new "cool looking" technique of their own. Poor therapists work from their own power not understanding that true technique comes from Mukan (Empty Space) were their exists a well of endless formlessness.

Masunaga's Zen Shiatsu book is my 2 nd "Bible" I have followed all Ohashi's work as well . The Lineage of these two masters is beyond belief , I "know" all Masunaga's "choreography in his sequences but to see his transitions and his "robust " work is beyond description. The audience of the vid are rivetted to what he is doing , lucky them to see this master in action ! harry petrie south africa "yours in shiatsu"

You should not make comments to your students and make such suggestions to fit your perverted way of teaching. Not all Shiatsu is performed slow! Often deep relaxation happens when you vigorously move around Kiketsu (blood and energy). In the west, many therapists work too lightly, too slow, and do more petting then actual therapeutic work!

I just read a website that has embedded all four parts of my video here of Masunaga Sensei teaching. On this person's website they suggest Masunaga Sensei is rushing and doing techniques fast because he was teaching at a seminar. This was a silly inaccurate suggestion to make! People should get real training first and not make silly comments like this! Watch Masunaga Sensei, listen to what he has to say, and learn!

The video was taken in Toronto, Canada in the early 1970s. During this time period Masunaga Sensei made a number of visits to one of his students there Tetsuro Saito who had opened a Shiatsu school there.

You are very welcome! I have seen many people teach and perform Shiatsu both in my country and in Japan. People just need more training in the original country where arts were founded. People need to get close to legitimate teachers and do what they say, follow their advise, and above all.... TRAIN, TRAIN, and more TRAIN.... before they use the term master and claim to be teachers. TRAIN WELL!

These videos have great value for people concerned with Zen Shiatsu in the world. I am a Japanese practitioner of Shiatsu in Paris and I also teach Zen Shiatsu. I learnt Zen Shiatsu from three disciples of Masunaga Sensei and I have many books and documents about Zen Shiatsu but I had never seen Masunaga Sensei actually practicing. In Japan too, it is difficult to find this kind of document. Thank you so much for your kindness.

You are right about that. I noticed you are locked for messages unless i'm your friend. I tried to send you one before. I would like to ask some more questions of Masunaga Sensei and what trainers/schools around today are worth learning from. I know of Wataru Ohashi and his school in New York, but have found a few others strewn around the country. I am a student of massage therapy in NH, but I am going to become a certified asian bodyworker and specalize in zen shiatsu.

This video is not for sale. It was filmed privately by one of the participants who was at the training event. Please be happy that you can enjoy it here and actually see Masunaga Sensei alive! A great many people teach strange methods in the name of "Zen Shiatsu" around the world. However, there are actually only a few people alive who trained directly with him. There are some other videos of Masunaga Sensei teaching which I may post once I receive permission to do so. TRAIN WELL!!!
