I notice my mahle filters (like your old orange one) had that big foam square block at the very entrance. It seems very restrictive. I was thinking about cutting that chunk off but wasn't sure it would seat. Your new one you've installed doesn't have that at all from factory and is flat all the way down the back. What are your thoughts on this?

These BMWs X5 have a runoff of water from the windshield that soaks into cylinder 5 & 6. It rusts both injectors at the back of the firewall. Both of mine are so siezed even with this proper tool both my heads broke clean off. You do not want to mess with this believe me I have spent $$$$ with no luck at removing them. You are a million times better off buying the injectors through Amazon and taking to BMW.

My HS520 is much rustier than yours! I had to grind off the scraper bolts. Haven't tried the paddle screws yet. But I thought I should wire brush & paint some of the sheet metal before it gets too bad. But the auger is in the way for much of it. How easy is that to remove? Advice, anyone?
@everybodysjonathan Жыл бұрын
Mine is quite rusty also. I just touched up underneath the scraper bar now while it was off. I just touched up the inside auger areas by spinning it when I needed to. Not perfect but much better than was before.

The belt on my X5 just felt off while I was doing 60 mile/hours on highway. I lost steering while my daughter was in the back seat. Luckily my farmer's instinct kicked in and I was able to steering the car off the highway by standing up from the driver seat and use the muscles on both of my arms and muscles on my waist and legs. BMW is POS. I will drive Toyota for the rest of my life.

Very helpful. A video on changing fuel/air filters seems to be missing on KZbin. (edit) After removing the top cover I can see that there are no external fuel and air filters on the machine. I bought an aftermarket set of parts that included them. I guess they'll go in the spare parts bin.

For European vehicles there is one major cheap investment tool. “Tire Tree” This is exactly what it means….a threaded stud similar to the lug stud but without the lug attached. Makes it so you can slide the tire on the hub but maintains the position. You install about two trees one skip one space then the other one. Once it helps hold the tire in place you install three lug studs. After that unthread the two tire trees and replace with the remaining two lug studs….has saved my bacon many times and for only a few bucks should be a must have for any European vehicle maintenance….especially Tires.

I was not as lucky as you with the bolts holding on the scraper bar. I tried for 2 days to get them off they were so rusted using liquid wrench. I was able to get one of the three off. The other 2 met my Milwaukee M18 grinder and came right off after that 😀. Mine is also 15 years old and needed a new belt and paddles. Just like yours my impact gun made short work of the bolts which where also in surprisingly good shape for their age. I think the impact gun is for sure recommended and I appreciate your video.

whatever you do... don't get a cheap tool. Get a good one! CTA tools makes a really good one. These cheapo units from ebay made from chinesium will bend and cylinder thread will give away... Also, follow BMW's torque specs when working with any bolts on the head. Its made out of aluminum. If you strip the threads by over-tightening, you will be in a world of pain.
@JRudd3 жыл бұрын
Note to those with really stuck injectors, whose extractor like this did not work: Order a diesel injector extractor from Amazon for $25. The injector thread size is M12, so make sure it’s in your package.

Hey what do you think is the source of water sitting near cyl 5 and 6? I recently replaced VCG and found quite a bit water (transparent thought it's water) sitting in that recess and a lot residue. The car was barely driven in the last yr. Btw did you end up changing that steel plug recess insert as well? (11127605104)

I think the water pooling is from the 3 plastic covers at rear of engine bay being broken or not sealing properly. I purchased new ones and replaced the originals. The originals seem to be glass fiber reinforced, the ones I bought from eBay are ABS and are more flexible so they should last longer without cracking.
@@ballstondiy2101 hey appreciate the link and reply. Read a bit online and ppl seems to be also pointing to that trim. Mine indeed was broken long ago, didn't make that connection

I noticed you were only using a scissor jack. You should also have a floor jack snugged up against the frame incase of failure along with the wheel under the tire. Friend of a friend died by doing a quick break job. Wife and daughter came home to find his body.

That is great advice thanks. I will have redundant supports next time. Wheel and tire under frame is an easy one.

throw some black rust-oleum on the belt cover, auger, side ect. will make it look A LOT better. Not sure why you said 10-15 years. Oil should be changed yearly or every 25 hours of use.
@Brian-Outdoors2 жыл бұрын
I agree on painting it after using a wire brush to clean up the rust on a drill or by hand to make it look a lot better. As far as changing oil you certainly don’t need to do it yearly like it says in the manual that is just crazy. Oil does not break down nearly that fast and I have only changed it 3 times on my 15 year old Honda HS520 which doesn’t burn a drop of oil. If you look at the oil and it is black then you waited to long but if it still looks clean you are good to go. No wonder people complain about maintenance and buy battery tools.
