When I was on lower difficulties, I saw this tier list and thought you were nuts. On gold stakes, now it makes sense to me. When there aren't "bad" jokers, negative is pretty incredible. The free jokers in general are really good on any stakes without bad jokers imo.

10a. Matador needs a rework. Rewarding you for playing disabled cards is not good when half the bosses don’t disable any cards. 10b. Chicot is good but steps on Luchador too much. Good discussion on this one. My idea was to let you skip boss blinds like any other blind. (This would still require beating the “final boss” blinds.) 9a. Showman exists. While I was thinking about this one I thought it could be interesting if there was a joker that made all other jokers the same rarity. 9b. I think Glass Joker is ok as is. Making it retroactive would incentivize taking glass cards earlier in the run and would make it much stronger, so I could see this change. Like they mentioned in the vod, making it add xmult on unbreaking glass would make losing glass even more tragic. Giving glass higher risk/reward is insane to think about. 8a. I dislike Loyalty Card. 4x is not enough and 6 hands is too many. Acrobat and Card Sharp are available every round at 3x. I like the 4-5x every 5 hands idea. 8b. Chill on Supernova. I agree with the pain points as a noob joker, but at least it does something at any point in a run and doesn’t punish you in the same ways as Ride the Bus and Green Joker. 7a. My boy Jimbo! I think it’s okay to have a basic joker. If anything, Jimbo itself shouldn’t do anything. An evolving Joker across a run or across multiple runs is an interesting idea. 7b. Sixth Sense is a joker I view in the same vein as Superposition and Seance: it is too specific to take 99% of the time. Not destroying the 6’s could be an interesting change. 6b. DNA I actually agree with Prof. It is one of the only ways to make a Flush Five build happen, but you give up so much to try and make it happen. 6a. Obelisk is so much fun. Making a pivot happen is so rewarding when you pull it off. It makes taking a second planet earlier in a run worth the cost investment. I think having a joker reward you for playing many types of hands (like To Do List but for permanent xMult) could also be interesting.

I disagree, doc. The description of sixth sense doesn't say the card has to be scoring, all it says is it has to be the first hand of a round and it has to be a single 6. A debuffed 6 is still a 6.

@@GKinWorWell almost all abilities that want you to play cards specifically ask for scoring cards, that's why they don't work with debuffed cards. Maybe an argument can be made that Castle and Rebate don't work with debuffed cards despite the fact that debuffed cards keep their rank and colour for the purpose of making hands, but other than that I think that playing a single debuffed six completely fulfills the requirements asked on Six Senths.

Shoot the Moon says it gives you +13 Mult for each Queen held in hand, but that's not technically what happens. Shoot the Moon gives the /ability/ "+13 Mult while held in hand" to your Queens, and that /ability/ gets removed by the "debuff" condition (OR get's retriggered by Red Seals). Raised Fist behaves the same way. When you delete a debuffed Face Card, Canio doesn't count it. There are /a lot/ of instances of 1) Cards not behaving as written and 2) Debuffed cards not counting for Jokers which care about Rank.

@@drspectredHmm. I kinda agree, many descriptions in the game aren't precise (enough) so there are instances where it doesn't behave the way it says it behaves. I also now understand where you're coming from saying that debuffed 6s aren't supposed to count for the sixth sense, per analogy to how other jokers handel debuffed cards. However in the video you say "it shouldn't [count], based on the description", which was the reason why I made the comment. This is one of the instances where the game behaves exactly like it's saying that it behaves, even tho in other places it does a lot of gaslighting making you, reasonably, think it shouldn't behave that way. Anyway, on a sidenote this makes me want to look for a compilation in what other instances the game doesn't behave the way it says or behaves counterintuitivly. (Maybe an idea for a video? I'd love to hear your take on those things and possibly ideas how to change the texts or the behaviours, given your influence on the developer you might even be able to change certain things for the better, in future patches.)

Would it have made sense to use up most of the cryptids on the 6's and 8's and some kings, while they were being generated to try get to the immolate faster? I know the argument for saving up cryptids for the endgame, but i was just thinking... each additional cryptid also reduces the chance of copying the new spectral cards generated, leading to a lot of repeats and a sixth sense bottleneck for a lot of extra rounds. Basically if you aimed for maximizing the chance for copying the new spectral card generated each round by keeping the existing negatives down to one each, you could get to the immolate faster, then delete everything else, get a blueprint/brainstorm to replace the sixth sense earlier, and make up for the cryptids you didn't spend time copying earlier by gaining additional rounds of an extra blueprint or brainstorm on perkeo. Also once you have the immolate, the deck bloat from using the cryptids earlier don't really matter as it can easily be shrunk down and rebuilt up with kings very quickly.

Holding many Cryptids makes it less likely to get Negatives of new Spectrals. By the same logic, attempting to hold onto more different Spectrals also makes it less likely to get Negatives of new Spectrals. At the end of the day, the goal is to create and destroy as many cards as possible. Every Cryptid is +2 to Canio, and every non-Cryptid is two less cards to destroy later. You don't necessarily need to find Immolate super quickly, as long as you find it eventually. You make Cryptids in the early game and then switch to copying mostly Immolates later.

I guess my thinking was in conjunction with the extra joker slot that the 6th sense takes up (and I guess this would also be true for pareidolia if it wasn't negative) - maximizing the chance of getting immolate earlier could be worth it for the additional antes you could get before baron and mime become necessary. So yes, the more negative spectral cards you're holding onto, the less the likelihood of hitting the new spectral card, but each additional card does make a difference. Say you have 7 unique negatives already, but no more than one copy of each, perkeo (let's say with one brainstorm and blueprint) still has a solid 30% chance of hitting the new card at least once, as opposed to when there's 30 cryptids (and a handful of other negatives) where it might be closer to 10% or less. So in theory, if you maximize getting everything you want out of 6th sense so you can free up that joker slot as soon as possible (and in theory, two joker slots in a world where ectoplasm doesn't hit pareidolia) for a blueprint, or brainstorm or even DNA, lets say, 5 or 6 antes earlier, would that make up for the fewer cryptid hits during the immolate search? And also I guess, is the 5 or 6 antes earlier close to realistic, or too ambitious of an estimate? 😄

Because of how the queue system works for balatro would it have been worth it to just never open a spectral pack except maybe if one is in the shop before the boss blind. You wouldn't see as many spectral cards but you eliminate the chance of seeing what you want and not being able to take it

The booster queue is separate from the queue for Spectral generators. Separate or not, each individual card generation is independent of every other.

Disclaimer: I could be completely wrong I've noticed that Perkeo tends to have a higher chance of choosing the same card if you have the same consumable cards over multiple rounds (i.e. Perkeo copies a card you don't want copied, and you only sell that card without making/using any other consumables, leaving the same card amount and configuration) It's definitely not 100%, but from what I've seen, it happens more often than not. I think it's worth noting when a scenario like that happens, as well as what card slot got copied. Maybe changing the order changes the rng, but I think it's worth a try to move the card you want copied into that slot Edit: Autocorrect and grammar fixes

The source code is readable, and we know this isn't how it works. Perkeo chooses uniformly from all available cards held. And then Blueprint choose uniformly from the new set of cards, and so on.

@drspectred I get that, that's my understanding of perkeo and brainstorm I just noticed that perkeo tends to choose the same slot when you have the same consumable configuration over the course of your last 30 videos. I get that it chooses randomly, but the game is pseudo-pseudorandom. If it randomly chooses the 3rd slot, you delete it and don't make any more changes to your consumables, then chooses the 3rd slot again. Maybe it is ACTUALLY random, maybe your luck with perkeo isn't the best so he's choosing the same slot, or maybe what I said is in addition to how perkeo works. I've never suggested the idea before because of that, but I've started to see it happen too often to ignore, hence the disclaimer

I think there might be something to the idea of using Seance instead of Sixth Sense to get the spectral cards. Can play more than one per round, can copy with blueprint/brainstorm, and doesn't require a constant stream of new sixes to feed into Sixth Sense. I think if your deck is set up for it, it'd be way less RNG reliant than Sixth Sense.

it can work, but in practice, you need a _very_ tightly tuned deck to consistently hit Seance just once per round. it's also nearly impossible to guarantee multiple SF's per round - even if your entire deck is three copies each of AKQJ10 in a single suit, you could end up with all 10's at the bottom of the deck and then you only get to play one. with hand size >=10 you can guarantee two, but you probably don't have much hand size if you're taking Ectoplasms. mixed ranks also synergize poorly with late-game jokers like Baron and The Idol Sixth Sense doesn't require you to think about any of this stuff lol. I can't blame the prof for biasing towards it

@altastral tbh you're overstating how hard it is to get straight flushes. Straights are very consistent with 40 cards in deck, and with a 3-6 suit changers so are flushes

@@altastral Good points, but I also think the throughput of Seance is better to the point where it's worth doing. Without blueprint or brainstorm, you only have to hit the straight flush once per round to be at parity with Sixth Sense. With them, you could hit the straight flush once per ante and still be at parity. I think you could easily ramp up to 4-5x the spectral card generation with Seance, but even playing one straight flush a round is doable lategame.

I'm not familiar enough with Lua or balatros code to know for sure but if spectral cards from 6th sense are pulled from a pool generated with some random number would it be possible with enough 6th sense procs that you could crack the state of that generator to know what spectral cards are coming when?

Each ante has its own set of queues, that when something needs a new generated item from, pulls from those queues in order. We know then which antes that the next spectral cards will be x, y, z, always in that order, regardless of what asks for the next spectral card. So we could know which antes to burn the sixes on and which antes to not bother. But this is only relevant to seeded records because we don't know the seed until he loses this run.

@@isocle if the rng is working as I am assuming then even in unseeded with enough triggers you could reverse the state of the rng because there is a finite number of starting seeds and a progressively lower number of them will have x card as the first and x card as the second and so on. but with it resetting each ante its unlikely there is enough information to figure out the rng seed.

@@ethanvann7226 I've also wondered if this is possible. Isocle's description is correct, but on the other hand, you get a lot of information very quickly in Balatro. There are roughly 2e12 seeds possible, since a seed is represented by an alphanumeric string with eight characters (I'm assuming homoglyphs are cut, but I am not sure how many that is, and I'd be surprised if that put it under 1e12). Here's the information available to you in a given ante: 1. Two jokers per shop (150 of them, plus 22 tarot, and some planets, playing cards, and spectral cards depending on what you've unlocked; and more if you have Overstock) 2. Six booster packs per shop, and the contents if you buy them (the first one is guaranteed to be a Buffoon) 3. One voucher per ante, maybe more if you take a voucher skip 4. Three skip tags (some are banned in Ante 1) 5. The boss (some are banned in Ante 1) 6. Additional shop information from rerolls 7. The approximate order of some of your deck in each blind (but not all of it, and it might be hard to tell the order of each draw within itself) By comparison, there are something like 8e67 possible shuffles of a 52-card deck. There are, unless my logic is wrong here, 1e15 possible starting hands for decks with 9 hand size (52!/43!), so that information alone is likely enough to cut the possible seeds down to a tiny number. That depends somewhat on the specifics of the RNG though (for example the bugged seeds that start with all of the same card on Erratic Deck will interfere). Like, I'm not sure what I'm missing here, but I'd be shocked if it's not possible to crack a seed before you are given it in Ante 8.
