Wow, the Chopin one is so creative. I have never heard something like that before.

This recording is from Hamelin's Wigmore Hall Recital in 1994 - it's already 30 years ago! But, interestingly, Hamelin wrote his own cadenza for the first movement of Beethoven's third concerto about four years ago (June or July 2020).

It took liszt's transcriptions of beethoven's symphonies to appreciate them and weirdly this transcription of his 3rd piano concerto to appreciate it. Genius composition - must have been awe inspiring to hear alkan perform this.

Amazing variations on Brahm's Lullaby!! And well-played!! Bravo!!
I like Gottschalk's piano music, I really do, but this is just gawd awful.

So why did Beethoven write 4 tied quavers rather than a minim in the final bar. Could it be a way of notating a graduated diminuendo and if so how can it be played on the piano?
@theharry8015 күн бұрын
its a way of notating a swell towards and away from the 3rd quaver, it can't be mimicked on the piano

Hard agree. That series he wrote toward the end of his life were some of the best music ever written.

It seems to replicate Schubert's accompaniment, especially these octaves, but I think it is too literal, so I wonder what if Godowsky or Hamelin (he already composed his "own" Erlkönig in 2007, and then listed as No. 8 in his own 12 Études) transcribed Schubert's one.

I admire Charles Henri Valentin Morhange Alkan. I have not heard this utterly mind-blowing transcription before. What a genius he was and his works live on to prove it. But not enough attention is paid to this master. He is up there with Liszt when it comes to "imagination". Thank you so very much for posting this revelatory recording. I am going to search for more!

Such beautiful voicings on those orchestral textures! This transcription and performance really do great justice to the original work, even if the cadenza is probably the most bombastic I've ever heard, lol.
