Alkan quoting Mozart's Jupiter Symhpony and other parts of the Concerto in the cadenza is just pure Genius just like what he did with Beethoven's Piano Concerto 3
@skylarlimex2 ай бұрын
Totally didn't expect that. Can't imagine if Mozart himself heard this cadenza in a concert.
@klop42282 ай бұрын
I dunno, I find it kind of cheap. Just rips the original from its context and fails to fit it into this one.

@@skylarlimex Even Beethoven's cadenza could probably surprise him a lot I guess! 😂

@@klop4228I think Alkan here is not trying to fit in the context at all, as he knows that it would only be an imitation coming almost 100 years later. In my opinion he's just being provocative and I love that
@klop42283 күн бұрын
@@ferru4003 that's not what I mean. It's not the cadenza overall that doesn't fit, it's the material from other pieces, removed from their own context and placed here in a way that just doesn't work. Maybe if this concerto were performed in concert after the Jupiter symphony and so on, it'd work really well. But who'd programme a concert like that? :P

His technique is of course flawless, but what impresses me most is the precision of his pedaling. Despite the complex voicings due to orchestra + piano transcription, everything remains perfectly crystal clear as should be in Mozart. This is an incredible performance.

I admire Charles Henri Valentin Morhange Alkan. I have not heard this utterly mind-blowing transcription before. What a genius he was and his works live on to prove it. But not enough attention is paid to this master. He is up there with Liszt when it comes to "imagination". Thank you so very much for posting this revelatory recording. I am going to search for more!
@TenorCantusFirmus29 күн бұрын
Love the fact he still left the cadences in his own style, but they actually fit in the context. Not to be forgotten, Alkan himself also wrote a "Concerto pour piano seul" (Etudes Op.39, nn.8-10), thus he was yet familiar with this kind of operations.

I really like the fact that Wee goes G-G#-G#, as intended by Mozart, instead of the A-G#-G# written by Alkan in the RH at 2:05. I don't know what was Alkan trying to achieve by changing that little detail.
